JWST Finds Evidence of Changing Water Clouds on a Brown Dwarf

JWST has found evidence that patchy water clouds on WISE 0855, a cold brown dwarf about 7.5 light-years away, change thickness over time. The result is the first direct confirmation of changing water-cloud thickness on another world—not the first evidence for water clouds beyond our solar system.

What did JWST discover about water clouds outside our solar system?

A team led by Brittany E. Miles used JWST’s NIRSpec instrument to collect repeated spectra of WISE 0855. Their analysis supports a picture of patchy water clouds whose thickness varies over time. The finding is based on changes in the object’s light interpreted with atmospheric models; JWST did not photograph individual clouds.

The University of Arizona described the result as the first direct confirmation that water clouds on another body change thickness over time. That distinction matters: astronomers had previously found evidence for water or water-ice clouds on WISE 0855, but had not established that their thickness changed.

How could astronomers tell that the clouds are changing?

NIRSpec recorded spectra across 2.87–5.27 μm at a resolving power of approximately 1,000. The team observed for 11 hours, sampling the spectrum every 15 minutes. A time series let the researchers track how light at different wavelengths changed, rather than relying on a single snapshot. They used principal component analysis to examine correlated spectral variations and compared the observations with atmospheric and structure models.

The models and spectral patterns point to more than one changing atmospheric process. The study interprets the cloud-thickness changes as occurring at lower pressures than the changes in gas abundances. This is an inference from spectroscopy and modeling, not a direct view of separate atmospheric layers.

Clouds and gases leave different clues

The study reports time-variable carbon monoxide absorption, with peak-to-peak modulation of up to 10% at some wavelengths. Carbon monoxide and phosphine variations were correlated. The authors interpret these gas changes as associated with quenched atmospheric pressures, distinct from the lower-pressure region associated with changing cloud thickness.

What was known about WISE 0855 before this result?

In 2016, Skemer and coauthors reported a spectrum of WISE 0855 obtained with Gemini North’s GNIRS. NASA described the observations as totaling 14.4 hours over 13 nights. The spectrum covered 4.5–5.2 μm, and a cloudy atmospheric model fit better than a cloud-free model, supporting the presence of water or water-ice clouds. That work addressed whether clouds were present; it did not establish that cloud thickness varied over time.

Study Instrument and wavelength Observation design What it supported
Miles et al., 2026 JWST/NIRSpec; 2.87–5.27 μm; R ≈ 1,000 11-hour time series sampled every 15 minutes Evidence for changing water-cloud thickness and variable gas absorption
Skemer et al., 2016 Gemini North/GNIRS; 4.5–5.2 μm 14.4 hours over 13 nights Evidence favoring water or water-ice clouds over a cloud-free model

Is WISE 0855 a planet?

WISE 0855 is a cold brown dwarf, not a confirmed planet orbiting a star. The University of Arizona release describes it as about 265 K and approximately 7.5 light-years from Earth. Its proximity and low temperature make it a useful target for studying atmospheric conditions, but the cloud result should not be presented as a discovery on a planet in another solar system.

What the finding does—and does not—show

The result provides evidence for time-varying water-cloud thickness and a model-based interpretation of how that variation relates to changing gas abundances. It does not give astronomers a complete three-dimensional weather map, nor does the evidence establish a definitive rotation period for WISE 0855. The University of Arizona release says additional JWST baseline observations are needed to clarify the object’s rotation and atmospheric structure.

The 2026 study by Miles and coauthors was accepted to The Astrophysical Journal. Its measurements and interpretation are reported in the paper record; the University of Arizona release summarizes the result. NASA’s account of the earlier cloud evidence is available in its 2016 announcement, and the original earlier study is listed at NASA ADS.
