JWST observations suggest that the rocky planet HD 3167 b may have an atmosphere: its dayside appears dimmer in mid-infrared light than a dark, maximally hot bare-rock model predicts. The result is evidence, not a direct detection of atmospheric gases, and the study also considers a highly reflective surface as an alternative.
What is HD 3167 b?
HD 3167 b is a rocky super-Earth orbiting close to its star, about 154 light-years away in the constellation Pisces, according to the University of Chicago. The study reports a radius of 1.6 times Earth’s, an equilibrium temperature of 1,786 kelvins and an orbital period of 0.96 days. Those figures describe an extreme, intensely heated world—not a habitable destination. University of Chicago coverage and the published paper provide the discovery context and reported measurements.
“Lava world” is an informal description for a close-orbiting rocky planet so strongly heated that its surface may be molten in places. The term conveys the harsh environment; it does not mean scientists have directly observed a global ocean of lava on HD 3167 b.
How did JWST find evidence for an atmosphere?
The team, led by University of Chicago graduate student Brandon Park Coy, observed HD 3167 b with JWST’s Mid-Infrared Instrument Low Resolution Spectrometer. They measured the change in light as the planet passed behind its star, an event called a secondary eclipse. The white-light eclipse depth—the planet’s contribution to the combined light in the observed band—was 38 ± 11 parts per million, as reported in the July 2026 paper in The Astrophysical Journal Letters. The paper record reports that this depth is more than five standard deviations below the expected eclipse depth for a dark, maximally hot bare rock.

That comparison is the key to the atmospheric inference. If the planet were a dark bare rock radiating at the maximum expected dayside temperature, it should look brighter than JWST measured. An atmosphere could lower the dayside brightness by carrying some heat to the nightside, or by reflecting more of the incoming starlight. The observation therefore fits an atmosphere that changes how the planet redistributes or absorbs energy.
Does HD 3167 b definitely have an atmosphere?
No: the measurement is evidence consistent with an atmosphere, but it does not uniquely prove one. The paper also discusses a surface with very high reflectivity as a possible explanation for the unexpectedly low dayside signal. The finding is best described as an atmospheric inference rather than a confirmed, unambiguous detection. The published study outlines both interpretations.

What is the atmosphere made of?
The reported eclipse measurement does not establish a molecular inventory. It is not a detection of water, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide or vaporized rock. It indicates that the planet’s measured dayside brightness is lower than a particular bare-rock expectation; identifying gases would require evidence that distinguishes atmospheric molecules from other explanations.

Close-in rocky planets face intense stellar winds and high-energy radiation, conditions expected to make atmospheres difficult to retain. The possibility that HD 3167 b has one is therefore scientifically surprising. Study co-author Edwin Kite, an associate professor of geophysical sciences at the University of Chicago, said: “What’s so surprising is that the closer a rocky planet orbits its star, the harder it should be to have an atmosphere, because it’s bombarded by stellar wind and gets more high-energy photons from the star. But it seems that many of these lava worlds do.” The university’s account gives the quote and scientific context.

Studying such extreme planets can help researchers understand how rocky worlds interact with their stars and how planetary atmospheres persist or disappear—processes relevant to rocky-planet evolution and Earth’s early history. The “coolest” wording is the study’s comparative framing for its sample and evidence threshold, not a universal ranking of every known lava world under every definition.
