J.A. Bayona is reportedly Universal’s leading choice to direct a sequel to Jurassic World: Rebirth, but the available report does not say he has accepted or that Universal has formally appointed him. ComicBook.com reported on October 2, 2026, citing The Hollywood Reporter’s Borys Kit on X, that Gareth Edwards will not direct another Jurassic World film and that Bayona is the frontrunner to continue the story.
What the director update actually says
ComicBook.com’s October 2, 2026 report says Edwards will not direct another film in the franchise, citing unspecified creative issues. It identifies Bayona as Universal’s leading choice for the Rebirth sequel, attributing that information to Borys Kit of The Hollywood Reporter, who posted it on X. Read ComicBook.com’s report.

That is a reported preference, not a confirmed appointment. The report does not include a statement from Universal or establish that Bayona has agreed to direct. It also does not provide production timing or a release date, so those details cannot be inferred from the director news.

Bayona previously directed Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, giving him a direct connection to the franchise. ComicBook.com characterizes that film as the best-regarded installment of the Jurassic World era; that is the outlet’s assessment, not an independent ranking or audience measure established by the report. Bayona’s other work includes The Impossible, Society of the Snow, The Orphanage, A Monster Calls, and episodes of Penny Dreadful and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.

What the “two steps back” reaction represents
ComicBook.com included a fan comment describing the prospect as “this would be two steps back for both parties.” It is one selected reaction reproduced in the article: the report provides no poll, reaction count, or other basis for treating it as representative of franchise fans overall. The update is therefore divisive in the limited sense that the article presents both the possibility and a critical comment—not because a broad fan consensus has been demonstrated.
Cast and other-project claims remain tentative
The same report says Scarlett Johansson and Mahershala Ali are expected to return, and that Anne Hathaway has expressed interest in joining. These are claims reported in that article, not new confirmed casting announcements. It also says Bayona has two other projects in early development, but does not establish whether either would affect his availability for the sequel.

Where to find the Rebirth figures
For readers looking for a franchise item rather than more director speculation, Mattel lists a licensed Dr. Loomis and Pteranodon figure pack. The official listing describes 3.75-inch-scale figures, a backpack and stun prod accessory, and an age recommendation of four years and older. The listing establishes the product details, not current availability on any particular retailer.
