JUnit 5 vs. TestNG: Which Testing Framework Should You Use?

Choose JUnit 5 for the JUnit Platform, Jupiter, and Vintage; choose TestNG when its suite configuration, groups, providers, or parallel modes better fit your project.

Choose JUnit 5 (Jupiter on the JUnit Platform) if you want its engine-based architecture, Jupiter’s programming and extension model, or a route to keep running existing JUnit 3 and 4 tests through Vintage. Choose TestNG if its suite XML, groups and dependencies, data providers, or documented parallel scheduling modes fit your test orchestration better. Gradle supports both, so build-tool availability does not settle the choice.

What is the difference between JUnit 5 and TestNG?

JUnit 5 is an architecture as well as a test-writing model. Its three projects are the JUnit Platform, JUnit Jupiter, and JUnit Vintage: the Platform launches test engines, Jupiter provides the modern programming and extension model, and Vintage runs JUnit 3 and 4 tests on the Platform. The JUnit guide describes the distinction directly: “Unlike previous versions of JUnit, JUnit 5 is composed of several different modules from three different sub-projects.” JUnit 5 User Guide

TestNG is an annotation-based testing framework with suite and execution configuration, including XML suites. Its documentation describes use cases ranging from isolated unit tests to integration tests spanning systems and frameworks. TestNG documentation

For ordinary test authoring, the practical comparison is usually Jupiter versus TestNG. Keep the wider JUnit Platform ecosystem in view when choosing how tests are discovered and how older JUnit tests continue to run.

Which framework should you choose?

Project need Better fit Why
Use the JUnit Platform and Jupiter’s programming and extension model JUnit 5 / Jupiter The Platform supplies the engine foundation; Jupiter supplies the test model.
Keep JUnit 3 or 4 tests running during a gradual JUnit migration JUnit 5 with Vintage Vintage executes legacy JUnit tests through the JUnit Platform.
Organize execution around XML suites, groups, dependencies, listeners, and parameters TestNG These are documented TestNG configuration and orchestration capabilities.
Use TestNG-style data providers and their parallel option TestNG Its named @DataProvider methods supply test arguments and support parallel runs.
Run tests with Gradle Either Gradle documents execution support for Jupiter, Vintage, and TestNG.

Do not choose based on a general claim that one is faster or universally better. The official material reviewed here does not establish a controlled head-to-head performance winner.

How do data-driven tests and lifecycle configuration compare?

Data-driven tests

Jupiter provides parameterized tests. TestNG uses named @DataProvider methods to supply arguments, and its documentation includes an option for parallel data-provider runs. The APIs and execution semantics are not identical; compare how your current test data is prepared, reused, and scheduled rather than assuming a one-to-one conversion. The JUnit migration guide includes advice for mapping TestNG data-provider tests to Jupiter parameterized tests. JUnit migration guidance

Lifecycle and orchestration

TestNG documents lifecycle annotations alongside suite, test, group, class, and method configuration, as well as groups and method or group dependencies. These can be useful when the suite’s execution plan is an explicit operational requirement. Jupiter has its own lifecycle model; migrating lifecycle behavior requires checking semantics, not just renaming annotations.

Dependencies and ordering can also make tests harder to run independently. Use them where a real suite-level requirement warrants them, not as a substitute for isolating test cases.

What should you know about parallel execution?

TestNG documents suite-level parallel modes for methods, tests, classes, and instances, as well as a parallel option for data providers. That makes it possible to express several scheduling choices in suite configuration. TestNG documentation

JUnit’s documentation includes parallel-execution material, but the sources cited here do not establish a precise, current feature-by-feature comparison of its settings against TestNG’s. Check the documentation for the framework version and runner you actually use before relying on a particular configuration or default.

  • Verify that test cases do not depend on shared mutable state or order.
  • Check whether fixtures, external services, temporary files, and test data remain safe under concurrent execution.
  • Validate the selected runner and configuration in the project’s build, not only in an IDE.

Can Gradle run both JUnit 5 and TestNG?

Yes. Gradle’s testing guide covers JUnit Jupiter and Vintage as well as TestNG, including execution, filtering, grouping, and reports. Build-tool availability alone is therefore not a strong reason to prefer one framework. Confirm that the project’s selected Gradle configuration and runner versions match the framework and test model you intend to use. Gradle testing guide

How difficult is it to migrate from TestNG to JUnit 5?

The effort depends on how much the suite relies on TestNG-specific lifecycle, provider, and orchestration behavior. The JUnit team’s migration guide offers mappings, but treat these as conversion guidance rather than proof that a mechanical rewrite preserves behavior.

Best Value
  1. Inventory the suite. Identify TestNG lifecycle annotations, data providers, group and method dependencies, listeners, suite XML, and any parallel settings the build depends on.
  2. Map test data. Convert data-provider cases to Jupiter parameterized tests, then validate argument sources and execution behavior against the original suite.
  3. Review lifecycle semantics. The guide advises considering @TestInstance(Lifecycle.PER_CLASS) when TestNG instance semantics are intended, and Jupiter’s @BeforeAll and @AfterAll for class-level lifecycle methods.
  4. Check assertions and exceptions. Review expected/actual argument order where applicable, and replace TestNG’s expectThrows usage with Jupiter’s assertThrows as appropriate.
  5. Run and compare through the build. Verify discovery, filtering, reports, and any parallel behavior in the project’s Gradle or other build configuration before removing the old runner.

The guide’s specific suggestions are documented here: Migrating from TestNG to JUnit Jupiter. This is distinct from moving JUnit 3 or 4 tests to JUnit 5: Vintage provides a Platform path for those older JUnit tests, while the TestNG guide describes conversion to Jupiter.

How should you compare performance?

No controlled JUnit-versus-TestNG benchmark is established by the official documentation cited here. If runtime will decide the migration, benchmark your own suite rather than relying on an unsupported framework-wide speed claim.

  1. Pin the JDK, framework and build-runner versions, test selection, and concurrency configuration.
  2. Run the same representative tests under each framework with comparable discovery and reporting settings.
  3. Repeat runs under the same machine and external-service conditions, and compare both elapsed time and whether the intended tests ran.

For a website screenshot API, ScreenshotNeo is the alternative to try first: cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture, and bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed. It also has an MCP server for AI agents and a free allowance of 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

ScreenshotNeo is not a Java testing framework and does not replace JUnit or TestNG; it is relevant if your development workflow also needs website screenshots. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for its API and MCP server. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month with no card.
