JPMorgan Estimates About $50 Billion Has Flowed Into Crypto in 2026 as Momentum Builds Into Q4

JPMorgan analysts estimate that roughly $50 billion has flowed into digital assets so far in 2026, according to a report covered by The Block on October 8, 2026. The analysts annualize that year-to-date total to a pace of about $66 billion, and they read rising ETF flows and futures positioning in the third quarter as a positive flow signal heading into the fourth quarter. The figure is a composite estimate of several kinds of buying, not a tally of exchange-traded fund subscriptions, and the momentum reading is an interpretation rather than a price forecast.

What the $50 billion figure actually counts

The headline number is broader than most readers will assume. According to The Block’s account, JPMorgan’s usual estimate adds together four inputs:

  • net flows into crypto investment funds;
  • the flow impulse implied by CME futures positioning;
  • fundraising by crypto venture capital firms;
  • purchases of digital assets by publicly listed bitcoin miners and corporate treasuries.

For the updated estimate, the analysts widened the calculation to include purchases by private corporate treasuries, private miners, and government-related entities. Because of that expansion, the $50 billion total cannot be compared directly with earlier JPMorgan figures built on the narrower set of inputs, and it should not be read as a count of spot ETF buying alone.

Year-to-date total versus annualized pace

Two different measures appear in the report, and they answer different questions. The year-to-date total describes money that has already moved. The annualized pace projects the current rate across a full year, so it is a rate rather than a realized sum. The figures below are all attributed to JPMorgan analysts as reported by The Block.

Measure Figure Period or comparison
Year-to-date digital-asset flows About $50 billion Calendar 2026 through the report date, October 2026
Annualized flow pace About $66 billion Derived from the year-to-date total as of October 2026
Annualized pace cited for May $52 billion May 2026, as cited in the same JPMorgan series
Pace relative to the previous year Around half The analysts’ comparison with the prior year’s pace; they did not give a dollar figure in the account reviewed

The current pace is therefore higher than in May but still well below 2025. Reading the $66 billion number as a forecast of full-year 2026 totals would be a mistake, because an annualized pace assumes the recent rate holds.

How the first half and third quarter differed

The analysts describe two distinct phases in 2026, and the mix of buyers changed sharply between them.

First half: treasury purchases and venture funding led

According to the analysts, most first-half inflows came from Strategy’s bitcoin purchases and from crypto venture funding. Exchange-traded funds were a headwind in that period, with heavy outflows recorded in May and June.

Third quarter: ETF flows improved

ETF flows improved after August and were positive for the year as of the report. That reversal matters for the Q4 read, but the measurement window needs care. Measured from the crypto-market downturn that began on October 10, 2025, cumulative ETF flows remained negative. A year-to-date ETF figure that is positive and a since-October-2025 figure that is negative can both be accurate at the same time.

Futures positioning moved higher

Institutional positions in CME bitcoin and ether futures increased over the two months before publication. Bitcoin positioning rose above its previous peak, and ether positioning approached its October 2025 high. The analysts treat futures positioning as one of the signals behind their flow-impulse input.

Trend-following traders began rebuilding longs

The analysts’ momentum signals indicated that trend-following traders, including commodity trading advisers (CTAs), had started rebuilding long bitcoin and ether positions. This is a description of positioning, not a measure of how much capital those traders have committed.

Miners were net sellers

Bitcoin miners were net sellers by about $1.8 billion this year, according to the analysts, and most of that shift came from publicly listed miners. The analysts linked some of the selling to funding investment in artificial-intelligence infrastructure. Miner selling works against the inflow total, which is one reason the net figure is more informative than any single channel.

Corporate treasuries funded buying differently

Public corporate treasury buyers funded purchases with common share sales, debt, and preferred shares. The report describes a gradual shift away from debt toward preferred shares. That change matters for balance sheets because preferred shares carry dividend obligations, while debt carries interest, and both can rise as a buyer’s holdings grow.

Why the analysts see positive momentum into Q4

The analysts’ reasoning is set out in a single conclusion, which The Block quoted without naming an individual speaker. Nikolaos Panigirtzoglou is identified as leading the team:

“In all, while during the first half of the year the capital flow picture was dominated by corporate treasury buying and venture capital funding, in Q3 both ETF flows and futures positioning have increased pointing to greater participation by both retail and institutional investors, thus creating a positive flow momentum into Q4,” the analysts concluded.

The argument therefore rests on a change of source: treasury buying and venture money dominated early in the year, while ETF and futures activity increased in the third quarter. The analysts link that rise to greater participation from both retail and institutional investors.

Two limits apply. First, “positive flow momentum” describes the direction of recent flow indicators. It does not establish that prices must rise, that inflows will continue, or that the fourth quarter will match the third. Second, the reasoning depends on indicators that can reverse quickly, including futures positioning, which can be unwound faster than fund subscriptions.

What this estimate does and does not establish

  • The $50 billion and $66 billion figures are JPMorgan analyst estimates, reported secondhand by The Block. This article does not present them as independently verified.
  • The estimate is not an ETF-only tally and is not an on-chain measurement of every transfer.
  • The momentum conclusion is an attributed reading of flow indicators, not a recommendation or a price target.
  • The analysts’ comparisons to the previous year are expressed as a ratio. Readers who need dollar figures for 2025 should consult the original JPMorgan publication rather than estimate them from the “around half” comparison.

Readers looking for the underlying JPMorgan report should check the publication directly. This article does not link to it because the report itself was not reviewed for this piece.
