JPEG XL is an image format whose files end in .jxl and use the image/jxl MIME type. It supports both lossy and lossless compression, high bit depths, wide-gamut and HDR images, transparency, animation, and progressive decoding. It can also losslessly transcode an existing JPEG, preserving a path back to the original JPEG data.
Opening or converting a JXL file depends on your browser or image application’s version. The current MDN compatibility table lists support in Chrome 155, Edge 155, Firefox 158, and Safari 17, with an important Safari limitation: the image renders only after the complete file has downloaded.

What is a .jxl file?
A .jxl file is an image encoded with JPEG XL (JXL), a format standardized as ISO/IEC 18181 and designed as a royalty-free successor option for modern photographic workflows. Servers identify it with the image/jxl MIME type. The extension and MIME type are different pieces of the same identification system: the extension helps operating systems and applications recognize the file, while the MIME type tells a browser or web server what kind of content is being transferred.

JPEG XL is not limited to one quality mode. An encoder can produce a smaller, lossy image or preserve image data losslessly. The format also supports progressive decoding, so compatible software can display an image while later data is still arriving. Progressive behavior depends on the application; it is not guaranteed simply because a file is JXL.

What JXL can contain
- Lossy or lossless image compression.
- High bit depths for workflows that need more tonal precision than ordinary 8-bit images.
- Wide color gamuts and HDR imagery.
- Transparency (alpha).
- Animation.
- Progressive decoding.
- A lossless JPEG-transcoding mode that can preserve the information needed to reconstruct the source JPEG.
Those capabilities make JXL useful for high-fidelity photographs, archival masters, editing intermediates, and images whose color, dynamic range, or transparency would be compromised by a simpler export. They also mean that converting to a more limited target format can discard properties even when the conversion itself succeeds.
Which browsers open JPEG XL?
MDN’s current browser-compatibility table lists the versions below. Browser defaults can change, so treat the version numbers as a snapshot and verify the deployment browsers you actually need to support.
| Browser | Version listed for JXL | Behavior or qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Chrome | 155 | Decoding support is listed from Chrome 155. |
| Edge | 155 | Decoding support is listed from Edge 155. |
| Firefox | 158 | Support is listed from Firefox 158. |
| Safari | 17 | Safari renders after the complete file downloads; it does not provide progressive JPEG XL download rendering. |
Chrome for Developers announced in 2026 that Chrome 155 ships JPEG XL decoding. The announcement reports that JPEG XL offers 30–50% better compression than JPEG, and recommends evaluating AVIF and JPEG XL together rather than assuming one format wins every image or workflow. It identifies JXL as particularly useful for high-fidelity or lossless photographic images.

How to open a JXL file
Use a browser or image application with current JPEG XL support. The libjxl support catalog lists ImageMagick 7.0.10-54 or later, libvips 8.11 or later, FFmpeg, GIMP, Photoshop plugins, XnView, IrfanView, and XL Converter among tools that can read, write, view, or convert JXL. Support differs by tool and release: some entries decode only, while others can encode JXL or process batches.
- Check the file. Confirm that the name ends in
.jxland that the download completed. A file with a renamed extension is not automatically a valid JXL image. - Try a supported browser. Open the file directly in a browser version listed above. In Safari, wait for the entire download; a blank or delayed display during download is expected behavior.
- Choose an image application for regular work. Select a current libjxl-based application or plugin if you need editing, metadata inspection, export, or batch processing rather than simple viewing.
- Set the application explicitly. If double-clicking does nothing, use the operating system’s “Open with” action and select the JXL-capable application. This changes the association without changing the image data.
- Update before troubleshooting further. JXL support has been added or improved across application releases. Install a current version of the chosen tool, then reopen the original file.
Opening versus editing
Viewing support does not imply full editing support. An application may display a JXL while failing to preserve animation, HDR metadata, wide-gamut color information, alpha channels, or high bit depth when saving. For an edit-and-save workflow, confirm that the application’s documentation describes JXL writing, not merely JXL reading.
How to convert JXL to JPG or PNG
A JXL-to-JPG or JXL-to-PNG conversion decodes the JXL and then encodes a new file. It is therefore a format conversion, not a reversible rename. Keep the original JXL whenever its HDR, wide-gamut, alpha, animation, or high-bit-depth characteristics matter.

- JPG: Suitable when broad compatibility and photographic output are the priority. JPG does not preserve every JXL capability, and a new lossy encode can introduce additional artifacts.
- PNG: Useful for lossless raster output and transparency. It may produce much larger files for photographs and does not reproduce every animation or HDR workflow feature.
Conversion procedure
- Open the JXL in a tool that can decode it. Use a current application from the libjxl-supported catalog, such as ImageMagick, libvips, FFmpeg, GIMP, a compatible plugin, XnView, IrfanView, or XL Converter.
- Inspect image properties first. Check dimensions, bit depth, color profile, alpha, animation, and HDR or wide-gamut status. This establishes what the target format may lose.
- Use Export or Save As, not a file rename. Select JPG or PNG as the output format and set quality or compression options in the application’s export dialog.
- Decide how to handle metadata. Preserve profiles and metadata when the destination and application support them; otherwise document that the exported file may not carry the source’s complete metadata.
- Verify the result. Reopen the JPG or PNG, inspect transparency and color, and compare dimensions and visual details with the JXL. Keep the JXL as the master if any property is missing.
Batch conversion
For many files, use a tool in the catalog that explicitly supports batch processing, such as ImageMagick, libvips, FFmpeg, XnView, IrfanView, or XL Converter. Confirm the tool’s read/write matrix and test a small sample first. A batch preset that silently converts HDR or high-bit-depth images to a lower-precision target can affect an entire archive, so inspect representative files before running the full job.

Can JPG be converted to JXL without losing quality?
There are two different operations, and they should not be confused.
Lossless JPEG transcoding
JPEG XL supports a lossless-transcoding path for existing JPEG files. When an encoder uses that mode, the JXL stores the JPEG information in a way that allows the original JPEG to be reconstructed. This is the appropriate choice when the requirement is “convert to JXL and later recover the exact original JPEG.” Verify that the selected application explicitly offers JPEG lossless transcoding; an ordinary JXL export is not automatically this mode.
Ordinary JXL encoding
A normal workflow decodes the JPG pixels and encodes those pixels as JXL. If the JXL encode is lossy, it can add a new generation of compression loss. A lossless JXL encode avoids additional loss relative to the pixels presented to the encoder, but it cannot restore detail that the original JPG compression already discarded. In either case, keep the source JPG if exact recovery is required.
Practical quality checklist
- Use JPEG lossless transcoding when byte-for-byte recovery of the source JPEG matters.
- Use a lossless JXL encode when you need to preserve the decoded pixels without another lossy step.
- Use a lossy JXL encode only when the size reduction is worth accepting a new quality trade-off.
- Compare the output at 100% magnification and check color profiles, dimensions, and metadata before deleting the source.
Publishing JXL on the web when support is uncertain
Because JXL support is not universal across every browser, MDN recommends offering an alternative format. The HTML <picture> element lets a browser choose a supported source and fall back to a conventional image.

Serve the JXL source with the image/jxl MIME type and keep the fallback files available. Test the complete element in the browser versions that matter to your audience, including Safari’s download-before-render behavior. If the image is animated, transparent, HDR, or wide-gamut, verify each fallback independently because a fallback format may not carry the same properties.
Choosing a conversion tool
| Need | What to look for | Catalog examples |
|---|---|---|
| One-off viewing | JXL decoding and a usable image viewer | Current browser, XnView, IrfanView, GIMP |
| Desktop editing | JXL import and export, plus profile and bit-depth controls | GIMP or a Photoshop plugin that documents JXL writing |
| Command-line or server processing | Scriptable read/write support and predictable metadata behavior | ImageMagick 7.0.10-54 or later, libvips 8.11 or later, FFmpeg |
| Dedicated conversion workflow | Explicit JXL input/output and batch options | XL Converter |
The catalog identifies capabilities at the software level, not a guarantee that every build exposes every feature. Check the installed version’s documentation for encoding, decoding, animation, metadata, and lossless JPEG-transcoding support before committing to a workflow.
Common problems and fixes
“My operating system says there is no app for this file.”
Install a current JXL-capable viewer or image editor, then use “Open with” to associate .jxl with it. Renaming the file to .jpg will not convert it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches“The browser downloads the file instead of displaying it.”
Check the browser version against the compatibility table and confirm that the server sends image/jxl. If the browser is unsupported, provide or request a JPG, PNG, AVIF, or WebP fallback.

“Safari shows nothing until the download finishes.”
That is the documented Safari behavior for JXL: it does not progressively render the download. Wait for completion or use a browser/application with progressive decoding support.
“The converted image looks different.”
Inspect whether the source used HDR, a wide gamut, high bit depth, transparency, or animation. JPG and PNG may not carry all of those properties, and a lossy export can add compression artifacts. Re-export with a suitable target or retain the JXL master.
“I need the exact original JPEG back.”
Use a tool and workflow that explicitly performs JPEG lossless transcoding. A regular JPG-to-JXL export, even at a visually high quality, does not provide that reconstruction guarantee.

JXL is a capable, royalty-free image format identified by .jxl and image/jxl. Use a current supported browser or libjxl-based application to open it, retain the original when converting to JPG or PNG, and choose JPEG lossless transcoding when exact JPEG recovery is the requirement. For websites, publish JXL with tested fallbacks rather than assuming every visitor’s browser can decode it.
