What did the recovery timeline mean—and what happened?
MLB’s June 7, 2024 report said Tommy John surgery typically has a recovery period of at least a year and noted that the Astros said both Urquidy and Cristian Javier would return during the 2025 season. The “at least a year” figure is general context, and the 2025 return was the team’s expectation at the time—not an individualized medical forecast or a guarantee.

Urquidy’s actual MLB return came on September 14, 2025, after a series of rehab appearances and his September 12 reinstatement. A return to one MLB game demonstrates that he resumed game action; it does not, by itself, establish sustained health, workload capacity, or availability for a later date.

- There are two documented Tommy John surgeries: one in 2017 and one in June 2024.
- Shoulder history is separate in the record. Right shoulder discomfort was documented in 2021 and 2023. The cited reporting does not establish that either shoulder issue caused or contributed to the later elbow surgery.
- Rehab milestones and transactions are not medical findings. The 2025 return and 2026 roster moves do not establish present health or future availability.
- No individual prognosis is established here. The cited material provides no Urquidy-specific recurrence-risk statistic or probability of future performance, and no attributable surgeon or physician prognosis.
For a current roster or medical decision, teams should rely on newer official transaction entries and direct health reporting rather than infer readiness from the historical record alone.
