Is the breach confirmed, and was it ransomware?
The state index is an official listing of a breach notice, but it is not the underlying notice or a detailed incident announcement. It supports reporting that Johnson Investment Counsel filed a notice involving SSNs and eight Massachusetts residents. It does not by itself verify criminal access, identity theft, or the incident’s cause.

A secondary report says the ransomware group Storm claimed the firm as a victim on September 18, 2026, but that report describes the claim as unconfirmed. The state index does not corroborate the claim. It should not be treated as proof that ransomware caused the listed notice or that any alleged dataset is authentic.
Was your Social Security number exposed?
The public index does not identify individual recipients. If you receive a direct notification from the firm, read it carefully: the index alone cannot tell you whether your information was involved or what specific records were affected. Johnson Investment Counsel’s general privacy policy says the firm collects SSNs and financial information to provide investment management and trust services. That context does not establish which records were involved in this event.

What to do if you receive a notice
- Read the letter and verify its contact details. Follow the instructions in a notice sent directly to you. If you need to contact the firm, independently confirm its contact information through its official website rather than relying only on a link or phone number in an unexpected message.
- Ask what information was involved. Ask the firm whether your SSN was among the affected data, when the incident occurred, and whether it offers monitoring, restoration, or other assistance. The public index does not answer these questions.
- Check for signs of misuse. Review your credit reports for accounts or inquiries you do not recognize. An unfamiliar account can be a warning sign; exposure alone does not mean identity theft has occurred.
- Choose a credit protection based on your needs. A freeze and a fraud alert are both free, but they work differently. You can also review reports to spot suspicious activity; that check does not prevent new credit from being opened.
- Report suspected identity theft. If you find evidence of misuse, use IdentityTheft.gov and the FTC’s guidance on freezes and fraud alerts for recovery steps. An exposure notice alone is not a finding of identity theft.

How to place a free credit freeze
The FTC says there is no cost to place or lift a freeze, and that a freeze does not affect your credit score. A freeze must be set separately with each of the three nationwide credit bureaus. Use the bureaus’ official websites or contact channels to request one, and keep track of the credentials or PINs they provide so you can lift it when you apply for credit.

- The date the incident occurred and how it happened.
- The total number of people affected, including any count outside Massachusetts.
- Whether data other than Social Security numbers was involved in this event.
- What the direct notice to individuals says, including any assistance or monitoring offer.
- Whether the Storm ransomware claim is accurate or related to the state-listed notice.
Johnson Investment Counsel’s privacy policy says, “We have not and will not sell your personal information to anyone.” That is a general statement about the firm’s privacy practices, not an incident-specific assurance about what information was accessed or disclosed.
