John C. Reilly wants another chance to play Rhomann Dey, but he has not confirmed a return. In an October 2, 2026 interview, Reilly said he hoped the character’s story would come back around and that he had not heard from Marvel since discussions during the making of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Marvel has not been reported to have cast him in the Nova feature.
Is John C. Reilly returning as Rhomann Dey?
There is no confirmed return. Reilly expressed interest, not a casting announcement. Speaking with ComicBook.com while promoting A Prayer for the Dying, he said: “I sure hope so.” He added that he had not heard from Marvel since they spoke with him while making the sequel, and said he hoped the opportunity would “come back around.” ComicBook.com reported his comments on October 2, 2026.

Reilly played Rhomann Dey, a Nova Corps officer, in Guardians of the Galaxy. He said there had not been room for him in the second film. His familiarity with the Nova story and enthusiasm for the idea of a movie do not establish that Marvel has contacted him about this project.

The latest project-format report in the cited coverage is a feature film in early development. On July 13, 2026, TheWrap reported that Michael Waldron was developing the film for Marvel Studios and that Sabir Pirzada had written an earlier draft. This is trade reporting about development, not confirmation of a production start, completed script, release date, or cast. TheWrap’s report does not confirm whether Reilly is involved.

Nova’s format has changed in the reporting over time. In March 2024, Marvel Studios executive Brad Winderbaum described the project as being in “very early development” and expressed hope for a Nova show. ComicBook.com reported those remarks on March 16, 2024. A later account said the earlier series had been shelved as reporting shifted to a movie. ComicBook.com’s July 2026 coverage attributed the film-development report to Deadline. The older show description should not be mistaken for the latest reported format.

The Corps’ apparent destruction gives a Nova story an unresolved piece of MCU history, but it does not reveal the film’s plot. In Guardians of the Galaxy, the Nova Corps was introduced on Xandar, with Reilly’s Dey among its officers. The Corps was absent from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2; before Avengers: Infinity War, Thanos had obtained the Power Stone associated with Xandar. TheWrap described the Corps as presumed largely destroyed when Thanos pillaged the planet for the stone.

The October 2026 report says Waldron indicated that the story thread would need to be addressed. No reported detail establishes how the movie will do that, whether Dey survived, or whether the story will use a flashback, a survivor, or another explanation. Those remain possibilities, not announced plot points.
