The team’s posted 2026 depth chart is labeled unofficial, still lists Cobie Durant and Shavon Revel Jr. at one cornerback spot and DaRon Bland and Caelen Carson at another, and does not yet include Porter. That chart is a snapshot, not proof that Porter sits behind those players.
What Dallas traded for Porter—and why
On Sept. 30, 2026, Dallas acquired Porter from Pittsburgh for a 2027 sixth-round pick and a 2028 second-round pick. The Cowboys described him as a high-level outside starter, making the deal a clear investment in their cornerback room rather than a confirmed announcement of a particular lineup spot. Dallas’s trade report said the move came amid early-season injury concerns: Durant had a hamstring issue, while Revel had knee and ankle issues listed on the injury report.

Pittsburgh’s Oct. 1 transaction report confirmed the compensation and noted that Porter was inactive for the Steelers’ first three games of 2026. He had been on Pittsburgh’s Active/Physically Unable to Perform List during training camp and was activated Aug. 30. Dallas reported that Porter practiced fully that week, but said his arrival and physical assessment would affect how quickly he played. Those details leave his immediate game readiness unsettled; they do not establish that he was either ready to play or unavailable.
How Porter compares with Dallas’s listed cornerbacks
The Cowboys’ 2026 depth chart is marked “Unofficial.” In the latest reviewed version, it placed Durant and Revel together at one cornerback spot, Bland first and Carson second at another, and listed Ameer Speed next under the Durant/Revel line. Porter appeared on the active roster but not in the chart’s cornerback entries. Because the chart had not been updated for the trade, it cannot establish Porter’s place in the rotation.

| Player or group | What the available team material establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Joey Porter Jr. | Started 41 of 47 career games through 2025; Dallas acquired him as an outside-starter addition. | His exact Dallas starting spot, side of the field, or first-game timing. |
| Cobie Durant and Shavon Revel Jr. | Listed together at one CB spot on the unofficial Dallas chart; Dallas cited injury concerns around the trade. | That either player has permanently lost a starting role. |
| DaRon Bland and Caelen Carson | Bland was listed first and Carson second at another CB spot on that chart. | That Porter will displace Bland or Carson, or take a specific side. |
| Ameer Speed | Listed next beneath the Durant/Revel line on the reviewed chart. | That the ordering predicts the post-trade rotation. |
Porter’s sustained starting experience is the clearest distinction established by the material: he made 41 starts in 47 career games through 2025, according to the Cowboys’ trade report and Pittsburgh’s transaction report. Dallas’s chart, meanwhile, shows its pre-trade options rather than a settled post-trade hierarchy. So the defensible conclusion is that Porter immediately expands the experienced outside-corner choices; naming him CB1, saying he replaces Bland, or assigning him a particular side would go beyond what Dallas had confirmed.
What Porter’s 2025 numbers say—and what they do not
The Cowboys’ Sept. 30 trade report attributed the following 2025 coverage figures to NextGenStats: 35 receptions allowed on 66 targets, 412 receiving yards allowed, no touchdowns allowed, one interception, a 66 passer rating when targeted, and -0.07 expected points added (EPA) per target. These are the Cowboys’ reported NextGenStats figures, not a new calculation. They describe a productive coverage season, but without a comparable league-wide dataset they do not support a ranking or percentile.

For conventional season totals, Dallas’s player profile reports 14 games, 51 tackles, 34 solo tackles, 14 passes defended and one interception in 2025. Pittsburgh’s transaction report instead says Porter started all 14 games and recorded 52 tackles, 35 solo stops and 14 passes defensed. The teams’ tackle totals differ, so the numbers should remain attributed rather than blended.

The same care applies to career tackles: Dallas’s profile table totals 157 through 2025, while its trade-story prose gives 165. The profile table also records 47 games, 31 passes defended and three interceptions. The difference in tackle totals is not resolved by the available team materials.

What remains unsettled
As of Oct. 3, 2026, Dallas had not published an updated depth-chart assignment for Porter or a named coach’s statement describing his specific role or technique. The Cowboys’ report noted defensive coordinator Christian Parker’s previous work with physically similar tall, long-armed corners, but that context is not a stated plan for Porter. Any scheme or role prediction should therefore be treated as analysis rather than a team-confirmed assignment.
Availability is also a moving part: Porter had not played in Pittsburgh’s first three games, and Dallas tied his timing to his arrival and physical assessment, while Durant and Revel had injury concerns when the trade was completed. The Cowboys’ current weekly injury report and any updated chart are the evidence to watch for a more definite answer on when he will play and how the group will line up.
