Joel Hofer stopped all 25 shots he faced as the St. Louis Blues opened the 2026–27 NHL season with a 4-0 road win over the Dallas Stars on October 2, 2026. It was the first season-opening start of Hofer’s NHL career and the ninth shutout of his NHL career.
How the Blues built their 4-0 lead
McTavish scores in his Blues debut
Mason McTavish put St. Louis ahead at 1:34 of the first period. Colton Parayko’s initial shot was stopped by Dallas goalie Jake Oettinger, but the rebound slid to McTavish near the crease. The goal came in McTavish’s Blues debut.

Dvorsky doubles the lead
Dalibor Dvorsky made it 2-0 at 13:05 of the second period. After a Dallas turnover behind the net, Pius Suter won the puck from Nils Lundkvist and passed in front to Philip Broberg. Broberg fed Dvorsky for an open-goal finish as Oettinger recovered.

Hofer’s shutout and the goaltending numbers
Hofer made 25 saves for his ninth career NHL shutout. The official Blues recap also noted that he recorded six shutouts in the previous season, second in the League. Oettinger stopped 20 shots for Dallas.
Blues coach Jim Montgomery praised Hofer’s focus and competitiveness, saying he had matured and was “blossoming into a potential top-10 goalie in the League.” That was Montgomery’s assessment, not an official ranking. Hofer said St. Louis had been tight defensively against Dallas’ offense and credited his teammates for limiting chances.

What the coaches said about the start
Dallas coach Glen Gulutzan said the Blues “got to their game quicker than we did and they stayed with it,” adding that Dallas needed a sharper start and did not get its legs until the second period. McTavish described his debut goal as “a pretty bang-bang play” and said scoring early in his first game eased the pressure of waiting for that first goal.
Toropchenko leaves with an injury
Alexey Toropchenko left early in the second period with an upper-body injury. At the time the recap was published on October 3, Montgomery described him as “more than day-to-day” and said an MRI was pending; no later diagnosis is established here.
