The actor described that connection in Bloodlines, his memoir, according to a 2026 report by Tbreak. The role was for Ben Affleck’s planned solo Batman film, which was ultimately cancelled—not a movie that reached production.
How Manganiello says the Deathstroke offer helped him
In the account summarized by Tbreak from an excerpt of Bloodlines, Manganiello’s health crisis began in 2016, while he was working on the television series Six in North Carolina. The report says he collapsed, was treated for an autoimmune illness doctors could not explain, and underwent surgery that removed his large intestine. These medical details are attributed to his memoir as reported by Tbreak; the excerpt itself was not directly accessible to the outlet at the time of its report.

Tbreak also reports that Manganiello described his weight falling from 235 pounds to 176 pounds during the illness. Those figures are part of his personal account, not a clinical record or a broader health statistic.

That is Manganiello’s account of the role’s emotional importance, not a medical claim that a casting offer treated his illness or caused his recovery. In his telling, the possibility of returning to work gave him a goal and something to hope for at a moment when his future felt uncertain.
Was Manganiello cast in Ben Affleck’s Batman film?
Yes. Manganiello was cast as Deathstroke in the planned standalone Batman film that Affleck was developing and expected to star in and direct. TIME reported the casting in September 2016, citing confirmation from Geoff Johns. The following month, Manganiello spoke about preparing to shoot the film in the spring, as reported by TheWrap. Those comments reflected the plan at the time; they do not mean the film was made.

The casting matters to Manganiello’s recovery story because the offer represented a concrete future project. The part was not simply a role he later played in a released Affleck film: it was attached to an ambitious project that never came to fruition.
What happened to Affleck’s Batman movie?
Affleck’s solo Batman film was cancelled. Manganiello later told Entertainment Tonight that the movie had been scrapped as the franchise moved toward a different version of the character, played by Robert Pattinson in The Batman.

- An import from Kaiyodo
- Upgraded joint system

Deathstroke did appear in other Justice League material. Manganiello’s brief original post-credits appearance was intended to set up a larger role in Affleck’s planned film, according to Vanity Fair. He also appeared in the restored Snyder Cut sequence. Those appearances are distinct from the cancelled solo movie: neither turned the planned Affleck project into a released film.

Manganiello’s account appears in Bloodlines, according to Tbreak’s October 2026 report on a memoir excerpt. Tbreak is the source for the illness details, reported weight change and quotation above; those claims should be understood as the actor’s account as conveyed in that report. His comments about the Batman project and the film’s cancellation were separately reported by Entertainment Tonight and TheWrap, while TIME covered the initial casting and Vanity Fair later described the intended Deathstroke connection.
