A federal jury in Tampa, Florida, returned a verdict for Aerosonic against Joby Aero, Inc. on October 2, 2026, awarding approximately $116.9 million in a dispute over air data probes, according to Aviation International News. The reported verdict says Joby breached a confidentiality agreement and misappropriated trade secrets. The available reporting does not establish the award’s full breakdown or whether a final judgment has been entered.
What the Aerosonic lawsuit was about
Aerosonic develops aviation and avionics equipment, including air data systems, instruments, sensors and probes. Joby was developing electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft and had sought Aerosonic probes for flight testing and planned production aircraft. The dispute centered on whether Joby improperly used Aerosonic’s confidential information and trade secrets while developing its own probe.

Aerosonic and Joby signed a mutual nondisclosure agreement (MNDA) in September 2021, according to the U.S. District Court’s August 29, 2025 order. Aerosonic later alleged that Joby used protected information in its probe development. In August 2025, the court denied Joby’s motion to dismiss, finding Aerosonic had sufficiently pleaded its claims. That was a decision about the sufficiency of the complaint—not a finding that Joby was liable. The jury verdict reported in October 2026 came later.

Air data probes measure pressure and related airflow conditions that aircraft systems use to support safe operation. The probes at issue were described as measuring pitot pressure, static pressure, angle of attack and angle of sideslip. These technical functions explain the equipment involved; they do not establish that an ordinary retail pitot tube is equivalent to Aerosonic’s confidential designs or suitable for a Joby aircraft.

What the jury reportedly decided—and what is not settled
AIN reported on October 5, 2026 that the jury found for Aerosonic on claims involving breach of a confidentiality agreement and misappropriation of trade secrets, with a total award of approximately $116.9 million. The figure is reported as approximate; the opened materials do not establish a complete line-item allocation.
AIN also reported that Joby asked the court to overturn the verdict and intended to pursue available post-trial and appellate remedies. A third-party Docket Nexus case index records an October 2, 2026 jury-verdict entry and later post-trial activity, but it is not the verdict document and does not confirm that the case has reached final termination. The reviewed sources therefore do not establish whether final judgment has been entered, whether the award has changed after post-trial motions, or whether Joby has paid it.

Which Joby lawsuit this is—and which it is not
The Aerosonic case is Aerosonic LLC v. Joby Aero, Inc., filed in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida, case 8:25-cv-00554-VMC-AAS. It is separate from Joby Aero, Inc.’s litigation against Archer Aviation and former Joby employee George Kivork in the Northern District of California. The September 29, 2026 order in the Joby v. Archer case addressed motions to dismiss allegations and counterclaims; it is not the Aerosonic trial and is not the source of the approximately $116.9 million verdict.
