For a career change, translate relevant work and projects into evidence for the role you want; use a portfolio or project page for visual or technical samples that need more room. Keep the application document clear, truthful, and suited to the employer’s submission process.
What “doesn’t look like a resume” should mean
It should mean a resume that tells your story in a way a hiring reader can understand—not a document that hides your work history or makes the reader guess why you fit. If your path is non-linear, make the connection between earlier experience, current projects, and the target role explicit.

Mika Flowers’s September 18, 2026 essay describes moving toward software work after eight years managing a retail floor and earlier front-desk work. For a software engineering application, Flowers reframed a Linux project by explaining what it did, how it was tested and packaged, and how it continued to develop in response to user feedback. The account illustrates one job seeker’s approach; Flowers said the search had not yet resulted in a hire at the time of writing, so it is not evidence that a particular resume format guarantees interviews or offers. Start with the job posting, not a template. Identify the responsibilities, skills, and outcomes it names, then choose real experience and projects that demonstrate the closest matches. Make the bridge easy to see
Do not assume a recruiter will infer how a past job relates to a new field. Explain the transferable capability through a concrete example, and include an outcome when you can support it. Retail management might be relevant if the role calls for coordinating people, handling operational problems, or improving a process—but name the actual work you did rather than relying on a broad claim such as “strong leadership.”
Describe projects as evidence
For each relevant project, state what it does, what you personally contributed, and what decisions or methods matter to the target role. Include testing, packaging, tools, or feedback-driven changes when they are genuinely part of the work. Do not claim results, responsibilities, or expertise you do not have. Tailoring is selection and explanation, not invention.

Choose a format that serves both reader and submission path
There is no single format that is best for every candidate or employer. Compare options by how clearly they show role-relevant evidence, how quickly a person can find it, and how reliably the application system can read it. Penn and UT Austin CNS Career Services caution that some applicant tracking systems may not handle tables, columns, graphics, shapes, images, or other decorative objects reliably. Keep the document distinctive without making it harder to use
- Use headings and descriptions that make the relevant evidence easy for a person to locate.
- Preserve an understandable work history even if skills or projects appear before it.
- Put visual or technical detail in a portfolio when the sample itself communicates more than a graphic on the resume would.
- Submit the file type and materials the employer requests; do not assume one format works equally well in every application system.
- Review the result after exporting or uploading so that the text remains readable and the important information is intact.
What a resume can—and cannot—do
A resume supports an application by helping someone assess fit. It cannot stand in for work samples or other application steps an employer requests. A distinctive presentation is useful only when it makes truthful, relevant evidence easier to understand. If a career change makes your history look unfamiliar, explain the connection rather than erasing the past or hoping the reader will supply it.
