A job-listing integration must distinguish an employer with no published openings from a board that does not exist and a request that failed. Treating every unexpected response as an empty array can silently make a broken integration look like a hiring decision. The fix is provider-specific parsing, explicit error handling and separate result states.
How an API failure turns into a false “no jobs” result
A common shortcut is to read a presumed jobs property and substitute an empty array if it is missing:

return data.jobs ?? [];That code conflates several different outcomes. A provider might return a valid bare array, a response with a different shape, an error page, or a successful response containing zero jobs. If the integration turns all of them into [], the interface cannot tell a real empty board from a broken request.
- Board not found: The configured board identifier or URL is invalid, or the employer has no board at that address.
- No open jobs: The request succeeded, the response passed validation, and the provider returned an empty list.
- Request failed: The HTTP request returned an error, such as a not-found, rate-limit or server-error status.
- Unexpected response: The request succeeded but the payload was not valid JSON or did not match the expected provider schema.
Keep those outcomes separate in logs and in the data passed to the interface. An empty fallback is not evidence that an employer has stopped hiring.

What differs across the four job APIs
The endpoints and access models are not interchangeable. A public job-board feed is different from an authenticated management API, and an endpoint reported by an article is not automatically a vendor-guaranteed interface.

Provider schemas can change, and the shape returned by a particular endpoint should be confirmed against its current documentation and a live response before shipping a parser. In particular, do not assume that all four providers return the same envelope.
Build parsing around explicit provider adapters
Normalize provider responses only after checking the HTTP status and validating the provider-specific payload. The example below shows the control flow; each adapter must implement the response schema for the endpoint it actually calls.

}parseProviderJobs should reject an unexpected type or missing required fields instead of returning an empty list. For example, if an adapter expects an object with a jobs array, a bare array is a schema mismatch for that adapter—not proof that the board has no openings. Likewise, if the provider’s documented response is an array, code that only reads payload.jobs will lose valid results.
Keep the outcome visible downstream
Represent the result as a tagged state, not just a list. A UI can then show “No open roles” only for a validated successful response with zero jobs; it can show a temporary error or trigger a retry for a failed request. Preserve the HTTP status and useful provider error details in logs, while avoiding sensitive credentials or unnecessary personal data.

- Handle 404 separately from other non-success statuses.
- Handle 429 as rate limiting and respect the provider’s documented retry guidance, if available.
- Keep server failures, network failures, invalid JSON and schema mismatches diagnosable as distinct failures.
- Do not overwrite a last-known-good job list with an empty list after a failed fetch.
Paginate and synchronize without silently dropping jobs
Lever: follow the returned offset
Lever’s list endpoints return a next offset token for pagination. Use that exact token in the next request and continue until no next token is returned. For deleted postings, Lever’s developer updates describe keyset pagination and a required time range no longer than 30 days; keep each synchronization window within that limit. Check the current Lever developer documentation and API updates for endpoint details.
Ashby: distinguish public postings from job management
The public Job Postings API is for currently published openings. Ashby’s separate job.list management endpoint requires jobsRead permission and uses cursor pagination; request no more than 100 results per page. Do not use the management endpoint’s authentication or pagination requirements to describe the public feed.

Greenhouse and Workable: verify the endpoint contract
For Greenhouse, use the Job Board API contract for public listings rather than assuming a Harvest endpoint is interchangeable. For Workable, account for the documented server-to-server orientation and 429 rate limits; do not build a critical feed on an article-reported widget endpoint as if its stability were guaranteed.
Verify that the board belongs to the employer
A successful response from a guessed slug does not prove that the board belongs to the company you are representing. Confirm the board link from the employer’s own careers site, then compare the board identity and company branding before displaying its roles. A valid-looking URL or HTTP 200 is not ownership evidence.
This check also prevents a different kind of false result: a feed may contain real jobs but still be the wrong employer’s jobs. Store the verified board URL or identifier alongside the source so future changes can be audited.
Test the cases that a happy-path parser misses
Use fixtures or controlled responses to ensure the integration preserves distinctions at the boundary between HTTP, parsing and application logic.
- A valid response with several jobs produces a successful non-empty result.
- A valid response with an empty job list produces
no_open_jobs, not an error. - A 404 produces
board_not_found, not an empty list. - A 429 and a 5xx response remain request failures with their statuses intact.
- Invalid JSON produces a parse error; valid JSON with the wrong shape produces a schema error.
- A paginated response fetches later pages using the provider’s returned cursor or offset token.
- A valid response shape for one provider is not accidentally accepted as another provider’s schema.
Counts observed on a particular date are not durable comparisons between platforms: openings change as employers publish and close roles. Treat a feed as a time-sensitive view of published openings, not a ranking of ATS coverage or proof of an employer’s overall hiring plans.
