What “Jio dongle” means
“Jio dongle” and “Jio Wi-Fi dongle” are common user terms, but Jio’s support pages call the product JioFi. Jio describes JioFi as a portable Wi-Fi device for Jio 4G connectivity. It contains a SIM slot, modem and battery, then shares the mobile-data connection over Wi-Fi.

That distinction matters because a USB data stick, a phone hotspot and a JioFi portable hotspot can look similar in everyday conversation but may have different hardware and activation requirements. The instructions and compatibility statements in this guide apply to JioFi and to devices sold as JioFi-compatible, not automatically to every generic dongle.
What you need before JioFi can work

The key separation is simple: the JioFi is the radio and Wi-Fi hardware, while the SIM and service plan provide network access. Replacing one does not replace the other.

Does every device connected to JioFi need a SIM?
No. Only the JioFi needs the SIM for the hotspot connection. After it starts, turn on Wi-Fi on each client device, select the JioFi network and enter the Wi-Fi password. The client device can use the internet without having a Jio SIM installed.
This is useful when a laptop has no cellular modem, when several people need one connection, or when you want to avoid moving a phone SIM between devices. The client still needs a Wi-Fi adapter, and the JioFi must remain powered and within practical wireless range.
How to obtain and activate the JioFi SIM
Get the SIM through Jio’s current onboarding process
For a new Jio SIM, Jio’s support guidance refers to in-store identity and address documents. Jio also describes an eKYC route using a biometric fingerprint and Aadhaar details. Document lists and onboarding rules can change, so confirm the current requirements with Jio when applying rather than relying on an old checklist.

Tell the representative that the SIM is intended for JioFi or data-only use. That helps ensure the correct activation flow and avoids assuming that every SIM product has identical terms.
Complete tele-verification for a data-only JioFi SIM
Jio’s data-only JioFi guidance instructs customers to call 1800-890-1977 from a mobile number. The verification process may ask for an alternate-number PIN, the last four digits of an accepted identity document, or assistance from a contact-centre advisor. Follow the prompts presented to you; Jio can change the flow or the information it accepts.
Jio states that a data-only SIM activates immediately after successful tele-verification. If the call fails, the details do not match, or the SIM remains inactive, contact Jio support and ask them to check the activation status before repeatedly attempting recharges.

JioFi setup: step-by-step
- Prepare the SIM. Confirm that the Jio SIM has completed the required activation and verification. An unverified SIM can prevent the hotspot from registering on the network.
- Power down the hotspot. If the device is already on, switch it off before opening the SIM or battery compartment.
- Insert the battery and SIM. Fit the battery in the orientation shown for your model, then insert the activated SIM into the JioFi SIM slot. Do not force the card; align its cut corner and contacts with the markings.
- Close the cover and switch on JioFi. Allow the device time to start and register on the Jio network. Registration can take longer immediately after a new activation.
- Open Wi-Fi settings on the client. On a laptop, phone or tablet, open the wireless-network list and select the JioFi network broadcast by the hotspot.
- Enter the password. Jio says the default Wi-Fi password is printed inside the battery cover. Type it exactly, including capitalization if shown, and connect.
- Test internet access. Open a simple webpage or another low-bandwidth service first. If Wi-Fi connects but pages do not load, troubleshoot the SIM, signal, service validity and recharge separately.
- Change the default password. After confirming that the device works, use the JioFi administration interface for your model to set a unique Wi-Fi password. Reconnect each client with the new credentials.
Service, recharge and the JioFi M2S offer
A hotspot purchase and a mobile-data service are separate transactions. You need both the physical JioFi and a Jio SIM with an active service or eligible recharge.
Jio’s M2S cashback FAQ lists a device price of ₹2,800 and an offer involving ₹1,500 in vouchers. Those figures belong to that specific promotion and can change or expire; they are not a permanent JioFi price or a guaranteed benefit for every buyer.
The same offer page describes an eligible recharge with a minimum 28-day validity. It also says the SIM must be inside the device and the device switched on when the qualifying recharge is made. Treat those as conditions of the described M2S promotion, not as a universal rule for every Jio plan or every JioFi model. Check the live offer terms, recharge amount, validity, voucher restrictions and expiry before paying.

4G compatibility and the 5G question
Jio states that all JioFi models currently available in the market are 4G-compatible. The cited support information does not establish that a JioFi connects to Jio’s 5G network.
Consequently, do not buy a JioFi expecting 5G speeds unless the exact model and current Jio documentation explicitly confirm 5G support. A 5G phone or 5G plan does not upgrade a 4G-only hotspot. The hotspot’s modem, supported bands and network provisioning determine what it can use.
For ordinary browsing, email, schoolwork and moderate streaming, 4G may be adequate where coverage is strong. If your requirement is specifically 5G throughput or low latency, verify the model’s radio specification before purchase instead of inferring it from the Jio brand name.

Can the JioFi SIM be used in another device?
Jio says an activated SIM obtained for JioFi may be used in another compatible 4G LTE device. “Compatible” is an actual condition: the device must support the relevant LTE bands and accept the SIM, and Jio’s service rules must permit that use. This statement is not a guarantee that the SIM will work in every phone, tablet, router or imported device.
If you move the SIM, switch the original JioFi off first, fit the card correctly in the other device and check whether it registers on the network. If it does not, return it to the JioFi and contact Jio rather than assuming the SIM is defective. Keep in mind that moving the SIM makes the JioFi unavailable until the card is returned.
Troubleshooting by symptom
JioFi does not power on
- Re-seat the battery and check its orientation.
- Charge the device with a suitable power source and try again.
- Inspect the SIM and battery covers for an obstruction that prevents proper closure.
- If there are no lights or signs of life after charging, request device support rather than repeatedly removing the SIM.
The hotspot powers on but shows no mobile data
- Confirm that the SIM completed activation and tele-verification.
- Check that the SIM is seated correctly and that the device is in an area with Jio 4G coverage.
- Verify service validity and recharge status. A Wi-Fi connection to JioFi can exist even when the cellular service has no usable data.
- Restart the hotspot after activation or a recharge so it can register again.
A phone or laptop cannot join the Wi-Fi network
- Read the default password from inside the battery cover and enter it exactly.
- Move the client closer to the hotspot and retry.
- Forget the saved JioFi network on the client, then connect again as a new network.
- Connect one device at a time while testing so you can distinguish a client-side problem from a hotspot problem.
Wi-Fi connects but speeds are poor
- Test near a window or another location with better 4G reception.
- Disconnect heavy downloads and unnecessary clients before measuring performance.
- Check whether the plan has exhausted its high-speed allowance or validity.
- Remember that a 4G hotspot cannot deliver 5G performance, regardless of the phone or plan used nearby.
A recharge or promotion is not credited
- Read the exact offer terms, including minimum validity and voucher conditions.
- For the described M2S promotion, confirm that the SIM was inside JioFi and the device was switched on at the time of the eligible recharge.
- Keep the transaction reference and contact Jio if the offer still does not appear. Do not assume a promotional voucher is the same as a cash refund or a permanent plan discount.
Security and practical-use advice
Change the default Wi-Fi password before using JioFi in a shared location. A password printed inside the cover is convenient for initial setup but is not secret once other people can see the device. Use a distinct password rather than one reused for email or banking.
Keep the hotspot ventilated, especially while charging and serving several clients. Place it where cellular reception is reasonable instead of hiding it inside a drawer or behind large metal objects. If you carry it outside the home, switch off Wi-Fi when it is not needed to reduce battery drain and prevent unrecognized devices from attempting to connect.
When JioFi is the right choice
JioFi makes sense when several Wi-Fi devices need one Jio connection, when a computer lacks cellular hardware, or when you want a dedicated hotspot that can be handed to another user without giving away your phone. It also keeps your phone’s battery and personal hotspot function separate from the devices doing the work.
A phone hotspot may be simpler for occasional, single-device use because it requires no extra hardware. A JioFi is more convenient for repeated multi-device use, but it adds a device to charge, a separate SIM to activate and another service status to monitor. Choose based on how often you need shared connectivity, not merely on the word “dongle.”
