The PC release is listed as 2018, but the game was still receiving updates in 2026. The developer’s Steam news feed announced a major March 2026 update and a July 2026 bug-fix post. How good are the combat and exploration?
Combat rewards attention
Player reviews frequently praise the strategic side of the turn-based encounters and the variety of bosses. That suggests combat is not merely a routine between story scenes: players who like to consider their actions and adapt to distinct fights are more likely to enjoy it. These are recurring player impressions, not a controlled difficulty assessment.

The March 2026 developer update added hard mode, which the announcement says changes every encounter and gives monsters more punishing behaviors. It is an option for players seeking a tougher run, but the announcement does not establish a universal difficulty rating for the game as a whole.
Exploration and optional content
Reviewers also often single out exploration and optional content as strengths. The game’s appeal extends beyond its main route, with players describing discoveries and side activities as worthwhile. The March 2026 update added two dungeons, expanding the available content. How much optional exploration feels rewarding is ultimately a matter of taste; the review evidence is qualitative rather than a measured estimate of playtime or completion rate.

What are the main drawbacks?
The most consistent practical reservation in player comments is interface friction. Some players find inventory management cumbersome, and some wish status effects were explained more clearly. Those issues can interrupt the rhythm of a turn-based RPG, especially for players who prefer clear menus and explicit explanations over learning systems through experimentation.

In other words, strategic combat and convenient presentation are separate questions here: reviewers can value the battles while still finding the interface inconvenient. If menu management is a major part of what makes an RPG enjoyable for you, this is a meaningful caveat rather than a minor footnote.

Is it worth playing if you like EarthBound-style RPGs?
It is worth considering if what you want is an unconventional, story-led turn-based RPG with a distinctive dreamlike setting, exploration, and combat that players describe as strategic. Its horror tone makes it a different proposition from a straightforward, lighthearted retro adventure, though. The available evidence supports a broad comparison to old-school turn-based RPGs as a reader expectation, not a claim that it reproduces any one game’s style.
It is less likely to suit players seeking a consistently cozy or child-oriented story, effortless inventory handling, or fights that never ask for tactical thought. The game’s unusual tone and some interface friction are part of the decision, not details that can be inferred away from its colorful or dreamlike premise.

As accessed in 2026, Club 250 reported 587 Steam reviews with 94% positive. That is a platform snapshot, not a permanent score or an independent quality measurement. Metacritic’s accessed page reported an 86 PC Metascore based on five critic reviews: four positive and one mixed. A small review set can shift as new reviews are added, so treat both figures as context rather than a guarantee that the game will suit you.

What changed in the 2026 updates?
The developer’s Steam news feed lists a March 2026 major update that added hard mode and two dungeons. The update describes hard mode as changing every encounter and making monster behavior more punishing. A July 2026 bug-fix post also noted a character-design change. Kasey Ozymy wrote: “I also changed Quarters’s design since someone kindly let me know that he could be construed as antisemitic.”
