Jim Rickards is reported to have warned that stablecoins pose a danger to the bond market and forecast that gold could reach $10,000 by mid-2027. Those are Rickards’s views, not established outcomes: the bond-market concern has a plausible connection to stablecoin reserve holdings, while the available reporting does not provide a transcript or independently validate the gold target.
What Rickards reportedly said
A Bitcoin Magazine listing dated October 5, 2026, advertised an interview with Rickards about stablecoins and a $10,000 gold outlook. Its description included a segment titled “Why Rickards Calls Stablecoins the Most Dangerous Thing in the World.” The original listing could not be opened to verify the interview transcript or the full context of that phrase. In an October 6, 2026 report, ChainCatcher attributed to Rickards the view that stablecoins threaten the bond market and said he expects gold to reach $10,000 by mid-2027. ChainCatcher also reported the “most dangerous thing in the world” characterization. Because this is secondary reporting rather than a checked transcript, the phrase should be understood as an attribution, not a verified quotation in full context. ChainCatcher’s report
Why stablecoins have a connection to government bonds
Some stablecoin issuers hold short-term government debt as part of their reserves. The International Monetary Fund’s October 2025 Global Financial Stability Report: Shifting Ground beneath the Calm says issuers already hold significant volumes of short-term government debt and rank among its largest buyers. That creates a direct link between stablecoin growth and demand for this part of the sovereign-bond market. IMF, Global Financial Stability Report, October 2025

What the bond-market evidence does—and does not—show
The IMF says expansion of stablecoins could bring new demand for short-term sovereign bonds or reallocate demand that already exists. These are different possibilities: new purchases could add a buyer, while reallocation could shift who holds the debt without creating equivalent net new demand. The IMF passage establishes the market connection, but it does not conclude that stablecoins endanger the bond market as a whole or substantiate Rickards’s broader risk judgment.
The distinction also matters because the claim is about short-term government debt held as reserves. The available sources do not provide a product-by-product comparison of stablecoin reserve assets or show how any particular issuer’s holdings would affect bond prices, market liquidity, or financial stability.

How to read the $10,000 gold forecast
ChainCatcher reports Rickards’s forecast that gold could reach $10,000 by mid-2027. It is an attributed price outlook, not a guaranteed result or a target independently validated by the sources available here. The reporting does not establish the assumptions, calculation, or conditions behind the forecast, so readers should not treat the number as a standalone basis for an investment decision.
