Jev security FAQ: isolation, permissions, updates, and incident response

Jev security is layered, not a single control. Jevbox documents organization-scoped authorization, immutable relationship snapshots, and repeated checks before data is routed, scored, stored, or returned. JEV Sentinel addresses the separate host-security problem: an agent cannot be considered adversarially isolated if it can modify the runtime, policy, credentials, or native hooks that are supposed to constrain it. JevForge adds a typed CI decision layer, but it does not replace dedicated application-security and monitoring systems.

What Jev secures—and what it does not

The clearest documented role for Jev is an authorization-aware application component and typed decision layer. JevForge Security Sentinel turns SAST, software-composition, infrastructure-as-code, secret, and container findings into a CI gate using TypeSafe Jev. Its output is one of four typed outcomes: PASS, WARN, BLOCK, or REVIEW.

A deterministic local policy establishes a minimum result. Jev can escalate that result, but it cannot weaken a stricter policy decision. For example, if the local policy says BLOCK, a Jev response cannot convert it to PASS. JevForge sends up to 40 prioritized findings to Jev while the local policy continues evaluating the complete preserved finding set. Repository documentation for JevForge was current when crawled in 2026.

This scope is narrower than a complete security program. An independent, unofficial Jev security guide states: “Do not replace SAST, EDR, a WAF, or a SIEM with Jev.” That is operational guidance, not a TypeSafe certification or guarantee. Use Jev for authorization-aware decisions and workflow control while retaining specialized scanners, endpoint controls, network defenses, and security analytics.

How Jev isolation works

Application-level isolation in Jevbox

Jevbox treats the authenticated session’s organization as the security boundary for resource lookups. Every lookup performs a live membership check, and a client-supplied organization ID is not trusted to establish scope. This prevents a request from selecting another organization merely by changing an identifier in the payload.

Authorization is not a SQL-only feature. Jevbox requires SpiceDB and maintains a relationship graph with versioned tokens. Permission checks occur before routing, before and after passage scoring, and again before results or paths are returned. The repeated checks matter because retrieval, ranking, or generation can change the set of data a request would expose.

Host-level isolation in JEV Sentinel

Application authorization cannot stop a process that is allowed to rewrite the code and configuration enforcing that authorization. JEV Sentinel therefore documents a stronger deployment requirement for adversarial settings: keep the immutable runtime, policy, API key, and native-hook configuration outside the agent’s write authority. Put tool execution behind a separate-identity broker and enforce the host’s sandbox or approval controls.

If a shell runs as the same operating-system user with write access to the middleware, it may be able to edit or disable that middleware and read its environment. In that arrangement, application checks still provide useful access control, but they are not a tamper-proof host boundary. The host account, file permissions, process isolation, broker identity, and approval policy must be designed separately.

Two boundaries to verify during deployment

  • Data boundary: requests can read only resources authorized for the live organization and current relationship graph.
  • Control boundary: the agent cannot alter the runtime, policy, credentials, hooks, or broker that enforce those decisions.

Meeting the first condition without the second protects application data from ordinary authorization mistakes but does not provide meaningful adversarial isolation.

How permissions and inheritance are evaluated

Default roles and sharing

Jevbox resources are private by default. Owners can manage sharing and delete the resource, editors can edit, and viewers can read. Organization-level access grants read access only; it does not confer editing or ownership powers.

Parent and child resources

Inherited access follows a resource’s parent. A direct user grant on a child cannot bypass a private ancestor, so sharing a file does not expose it when the folder chain still denies access. Moving a folder changes its parent and inheritance relationships in a new authorization snapshot. Descendants then inherit permissions from the destination rather than retaining an obsolete path-based assumption.

Revocation after retrieval or generation

Jevbox checks authorization again after retrieval and generation, before persistence and before responding. Conversations retain dependencies on every source and category used in earlier turns. If one of those dependencies is revoked or deleted, the whole conversation is blocked, including its title and earlier user messages. This prevents old generated context from becoming a side channel after a source is no longer authorized.

The practical implication is that “the user could read it earlier” is not sufficient authorization for a later request. Current membership, current relationships, and current dependencies are evaluated at the points where data could be routed or disclosed.

How provider keys and state are protected

Provider credentials

Jevbox describes provider keys as organization-scoped and encrypted with AES-256-GCM. They are write-only through the user interface, so the interface does not provide a read-back path for the secret. A selected provider receives only authorized excerpts and still-authorized history, and provider errors are sanitized before being returned to the caller.

Operationally, keep production keys out of source control and maintain one controlled production entry point. The independent guide recommends rotating keys on the vendor’s console rather than through application code. Rotation should be accompanied by revoking the old credential and checking which organization or environment owns the replacement.

Retrieved text is input, not policy

The same guide warns that jev-1.13 does not treat state as hostile by default. Minimize retained state and treat ticket text, prompts, retrieved documents, and tool output as untrusted input. A document can contain instructions that attempt to redirect a decision; it should not be able to change the authorization policy or grant itself access.

Store only the context needed for the task, preserve dependency metadata, and apply the same authorization check when previously stored material is reused. Encryption of a key does not make untrusted prompt content safe, and access checks do not make a compromised credential harmless.

What happens when an update or write fails

Transactional graph publication

Jevbox writes to PostgreSQL and publishes a fresh SpiceDB graph version and final ZedToken only after every write succeeds. If any part of the update fails, the transaction rolls back. As its security documentation puts it: “Partial writes remain unreachable; failed updates roll back and preserve the previously committed version and token.” A request therefore sees either the prior committed authorization state or the complete new state, not a half-applied relationship set.

Recovery after restore or service reset

At startup, Jevbox rebuilds each organization’s relationship snapshot from PostgreSQL before serving requests. This repairs missing or stale relationships after a database restore or service reset. Operators should allow that rebuild to complete and verify that the serving instance is using the newly generated graph version before reopening traffic.

Safer CI and managed-file updates

JevForge recommends pinning an exact action tag such as @v0.1.1 or a commit SHA instead of a floating major version. Pinning makes a CI change reviewable and prevents an unplanned upstream revision from changing the security decision path.

JEV Sentinel refuses unsafe managed-file rewrites when expected hashes or schemas do not match. It keeps private backups for controlled restoration. Treat a hash or schema mismatch as a change-control event: stop the rewrite, inspect the file and backup, and restore only through an administrator-approved process.

Timeouts, errors, and incident response

Choose fail-closed behavior for privileged actions

The independent guide recommends that timeouts and HTTP 529 responses produce DENY or REVIEW for privileged actions. Do not retry 401 or 422 responses automatically: a 401 indicates an authentication problem and a 422 indicates an invalid request that needs correction. Retrying either can create noise or repeat a malformed operation without improving its authorization.

For non-privileged, reversible work, an organization may define a different availability policy, but that exception should be explicit. Never let a timeout silently become approval for a permission change, secret access, deployment, or destructive tool call.

Bounded incident outbox

JEV Sentinel records findings in a bounded local SQLite incident outbox and routes them to an administrator or security review. Delivery is at-least-once, so the receiving system must deduplicate with an idempotency key. Alerts contain incident metadata and fingerprints rather than raw prompts, tool arguments, repository paths, or secrets, reducing the chance that the alert channel becomes a second data-exfiltration path.

A restricted reviewer must not create new permissions or automatically replay a blocked action. The reviewer can investigate, approve a separately authorized remediation, or escalate to an administrator. UseJev’s security-alert use case, published September 19, 2026, summarizes the human-control principle as keeping host isolation “behind a high confidence bar and a human.” That is a use-case recommendation, not evidence of a TypeSafe service-level guarantee.

A practical response sequence

  1. Preserve the incident fingerprint, timestamp, organization, decision, and idempotency key.
  2. Keep the privileged action denied or in review while authentication, graph state, and host controls are checked.
  3. Confirm whether the agent, broker, runtime, policy, or managed file was modified.
  4. Revoke or rotate affected credentials at their administrative control point.
  5. Rebuild and verify the organization’s relationship snapshot if state was restored or found stale.
  6. Re-enable only the minimum operation after an authorized reviewer records the decision.

Where Jev fits beside other security controls

Control question Jev-oriented behavior What a separate control supplies
Where is enforcement? Application authorization, relationship checks, and typed decision logic Host or operating-system isolation protects the enforcement machinery itself
How are decisions expressed? PASS, WARN, BLOCK, or REVIEW, with a deterministic policy floor Scanners and detection systems provide specialized findings and telemetry
What happens on failure? Privileged timeouts should deny or require review under the independent guidance Each surrounding system needs its own fail-open or fail-closed policy
How fresh is access? Live membership checks, relationship snapshots, and graph tokens Infrastructure controls can enforce process, network, and filesystem boundaries
How are incidents handled? Bounded outbox, at-least-once delivery, deduplication, and human review A SIEM or case-management system correlates events across the environment
What is the scope? Authorization-aware decisions and CI workflow gating SAST, EDR, WAF, SIEM, SCA, and other systems cover their specialized domains

This division prevents a common design error: treating a typed decision component as if it were a complete endpoint, network, or software-supply-chain defense.

Deployment checklist

  • Require live organization membership checks; never trust a client-provided organization identifier for scope.
  • Use SpiceDB and preserve the graph version or ZedToken associated with each authorization decision.
  • Check permissions before routing, around retrieval or scoring, and before persistence and response.
  • Model private ancestors so a child grant cannot bypass an ancestor’s denial.
  • Record source and category dependencies for conversations and invalidate the entire conversation when a dependency is revoked or deleted.
  • Keep runtime, policy, API keys, and native hooks outside the agent’s write authority.
  • Use a separate-identity tool broker plus host sandbox or approval controls.
  • Encrypt organization-scoped provider keys, make them write-only in the UI, and rotate them administratively.
  • Minimize retained state and treat retrieved text, prompts, tickets, and tool output as untrusted.
  • Pin CI actions to an exact tag or commit SHA.
  • Reject managed-file rewrites on hash or schema mismatch and retain private backups.
  • Make privileged timeout behavior deny or review, and do not retry 401 or 422 responses.
  • Deduplicate at-least-once incident delivery with an idempotency key.
  • Keep an authorized human in the loop for host-isolation exceptions and blocked-action review.

Evidence limits to keep in mind

The Jevbox, JevForge, and JEV Sentinel materials are implementation documentation and project guidance, not independent certification reports. The published unofficial guide identifies itself as unaffiliated with TypeSafe AI. No authoritative published breach rate, false-positive rate, uptime percentage, or independent Jev security-audit score is established by these materials. Those figures should not be inferred from the presence of transactions, encryption, or typed outcomes.
