Its core plugin has a free tier, while separate products and paid bundles add capabilities such as real-time backups, malware scanning, larger storage, advanced statistics and automated performance tools. The practical question is which feature and usage allowance your site needs, not simply whether Jetpack is “free.”

What is Jetpack?
Jetpack combines a WordPress plugin with cloud-connected services operated by Automattic. The plugin adds controls inside your WordPress dashboard, while some processing and reporting happens through Jetpack’s connected service. Its official feature guide groups tools into security, growth, performance and support categories: see the current core-plugin feature list.
Jetpack is not one indivisible product. The core plugin provides selected free and paid modules, and standalone products extend it. Jetpack Boost focuses on page-performance optimization, while Jetpack Protect adds security scanning and firewall capabilities. A feature shown in one product or bundle is not automatically included in every Jetpack plan.
#1 Best Overall
Jetpack says its services are used by “3+ million WordPress sites.” The live pricing page does not state a year, methodology or reporting date for that figure, so it should be treated as the company’s published product statistic rather than an independently verified market count.
Is Jetpack free?
Yes, a free option exists, but “free Jetpack” means a defined selection of modules rather than every Jetpack service. The free core plugin includes tools such as account and brute-force protection, downtime monitoring, notifications, Stats, social sharing, forms, newsletters, related posts, SEO tools, sitemaps and other site features. Paid plans and standalone products unlock additional capabilities and higher allowances.
The current comparison uses four tiers: Free, Security, Growth and Complete. Their purpose differs, so choose by required functions instead of assuming the most expensive tier is automatically faster or safer for every site.

The comparison also changes activity-log retention, spam-protection API calls, Search limits, VideoPress capacity, AI usage and support. The page lists 10,000 monthly Akismet API calls for Security and 60,000 for Complete. Those are plan specifications displayed by Jetpack, not general industry benchmarks; check the live table for any allowance that affects your site.
What does Jetpack do?
Security and reliability
- Account and brute-force protection help reduce unauthorized-login attempts.
- Downtime monitoring can notify you when a site becomes unavailable.
- Firewall capabilities and malware scanning are available through the relevant Jetpack products and paid bundles.
- Real-time backups in the Security and Complete bundles preserve recoverable copies; the displayed storage is 10 GB for Security and 1 TB for Complete.
- Activity logs provide an audit trail, with retention depending on the plan.
Scanning is preventive monitoring, not a guaranteed cleanup service. Jetpack’s pricing FAQ says Scan is not designed to fully clean a site that was already infected before activation. If an existing compromise is suspected, isolate the site and use a qualified incident-response or malware-removal service rather than assuming that enabling Scan will repair it.
Publishing and audience growth
Core Jetpack tools include social sharing, related posts, forms, newsletters, subscriptions, SEO tools and XML sitemaps. Growth-oriented bundles add larger allowances for services such as Search, VideoPress, AI requests and commercial Stats. The exact limits are plan-specific and can change, so use the comparison table when a monthly quota matters.
Rank #2
Performance optimization
Jetpack Boost is the performance component. The current comparison lists image delivery through a CDN and lazy loading in all four tiers. Critical CSS is a manual option in Free, Security and Growth and automated in Complete. Performance history appears only in Complete.
Recommended Free Tools
These are optimization capabilities, not a promise of a particular Core Web Vitals score, load time or search ranking. Jetpack’s published materials do not establish an independent study quantifying a universal speed improvement. Evaluate the site you actually operate with a consistent test method before and after enabling a feature.
Does Jetpack slow down WordPress?
There is no single answer for every installation. Jetpack can add scripts, requests and background connections, while its CDN, lazy loading and other optimizations can reduce image and page-delivery work. The balance depends on your theme, hosting, existing plugins, traffic and which modules are enabled.
Use a controlled check rather than relying on a blanket claim:
- Record representative mobile and desktop page measurements with your normal cache state.
- Enable only the Jetpack module you want to evaluate, such as image CDN or lazy loading.
- Clear the site and browser caches, then repeat the same tests at comparable times.
- Check real user behavior, JavaScript errors, image quality and conversion paths, not just one synthetic score.
- Keep the module only if the result is useful for your visitors. Jetpack’s setup guidance allows individual features to be switched off.
Do not describe Jetpack as guaranteed to improve or damage performance. Its tools change delivery behavior, and the outcome is site-specific.
How to install and connect Jetpack
Jetpack requires a free WordPress.com account for the connection, even when you plan to use only free features. The official getting-started guide describes the following process.
- In the WordPress administrator, open Plugins > Add New, search for Jetpack and install the official plugin.
- Activate it and select the connection option. Sign in to an existing free WordPress.com account or create one.
- Review the recommended modules and choose a free or paid plan. You can change the selection later.
- Open Jetpack’s settings and disable modules you do not need. Feature-level controls are available instead of requiring the entire plugin to remain fully enabled.
- Test forms, sharing, subscriptions, backups, statistics and any security notifications that your site relies on.
Jetpack’s pricing FAQ lists a current WordPress version, a publicly accessible website and XML-RPC enabled as hosting requirements. A private local installation, blocked XML-RPC endpoint or outdated WordPress version can prevent the connection or individual services from working.
What is Jetpack Stats?
Jetpack Stats is the traffic-reporting module. The free version reports views and visitors, top posts and pages, referrers, clicks, search terms, authors, downloads, video plays, insights, subscribers, country-level locations and full historical data.
Paid Stats adds UTM campaign reporting, device breakdowns and more detailed region and city locations. Pricing depends on monthly traffic rather than one universal flat rate. Growth and Complete bundles include paid Stats up to the comparison’s stated monthly limits: 10,000 views for Growth and 100,000 for Complete.
Stats does not count every request as a visit. By default, reports exclude visits from the site owner while logged in as an administrator, browsers that do not run JavaScript or load images, search-engine crawlers and logged-in registered members. These rules explain why Stats totals can differ from server logs or another analytics service. Jetpack says Stats can be used alongside services such as Google Analytics when you need another measurement system.
How much does Jetpack cost?
Jetpack pricing is regional, promotional and plan-specific. When checked on October 13, 2026, the official pricing page displayed New Zealand-dollar prices, yearly billing for the shown bundles and a first-year introductory discount. The displayed offer is not a universal or permanent global price; your country, billing cadence and renewal period can produce a different amount.
Before checkout, confirm:
- Your billing country and currency.
- Whether the displayed amount is an introductory first-year price or the recurring renewal price.
- Whether the entitlement is per site and whether you need licenses for multiple installations.
- Storage, Stats views, Search, VideoPress, spam API and AI limits for the exact plan.
- The refund period for the billing cadence you selected.
Jetpack’s FAQ states that yearly plans can be refunded within 14 days and monthly plans within 7 days. Read the current terms at Jetpack’s live pricing page before payment, because promotions and plan definitions can change.

Which Jetpack plan should you choose?
Choose Free when
You need selected publishing, basic protection, notifications, downtime monitoring or free Stats and do not require Jetpack’s paid backup, scanning, storage or commercial usage allowances. Confirm that the specific free module you want is listed in the current feature guide.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChoose Security when
Recoverable backups, malware scanning and a defined backup archive are central requirements. The displayed comparison provides 10 GB of real-time-backup storage for this tier. Check whether that capacity matches your media library and retention needs.
Choose Growth when
Your priority is audience and publishing growth, and you expect up to 10,000 paid-Stats views per month. Review Search, VideoPress, AI and other quotas before purchase; Growth is not presented as the same security bundle as Security or Complete.
Choose Complete when
You need the broadest combined allowances, automated Critical CSS, performance history, malware scanning, real-time backups and 1 TB of displayed backup storage. Its included paid Stats limit is 100,000 monthly views, but high-traffic sites should still verify what happens after that allowance.
For agencies managing several sites
Jetpack describes an Automattic for Agencies licensing platform with volume discounts and referral revenue on plans sold. That path is aimed at agencies and freelancers managing client installations, not as a default requirement for an individual site owner. Verify eligibility and current terms directly.
Common limitations and troubleshooting
The connection will not complete
Confirm that WordPress is current, the site is publicly reachable and XML-RPC is enabled. Security plugins, host firewalls or maintenance-mode settings that block XML-RPC can interrupt setup. Temporarily review those controls with your host, then reconnect and restore the safest configuration.
Best Value
A feature or quota is missing
Check the plan comparison rather than assuming that installing the core plugin activates every service. Boost and Protect are separate products, and allowances for Stats, Search, VideoPress, spam and AI differ by tier.
Stats is lower than another analytics report
Compare the counting rules first: administrator sessions, non-JavaScript browsers, image-blocking browsers, crawlers and logged-in members are excluded by default. Use a second analytics service when you need broader or differently defined traffic measurement.
Security scanning finds a previously hacked site
Do not treat Scan as a complete cleanup tool. Preserve evidence, restrict access and obtain specialist remediation if the infection predates activation.

Performance does not improve
Check that the intended Boost module is enabled, test the same templates under the same cache conditions and inspect real user impact. Disable an individual feature if it conflicts with a theme, plugin or image workflow; Jetpack does not guarantee a particular score or ranking result.
Where to verify current details
Use Jetpack’s core feature guide for module availability, the live pricing and comparison page for regional prices and limits, the Stats plan guide for reporting tiers, and the Stats troubleshooting FAQ for counting exclusions. Those pages are the appropriate places to recheck details immediately before subscribing because Jetpack can change prices, allowances and packaging.
