Yes. Jellyfin provides an official install-debuntu.sh Bash script that adds the project repository and installs Jellyfin on Debian, Ubuntu and several related distributions. You still download and verify the file, run it with sudo, and complete the server’s media-library and playback configuration afterward.
What the Jellyfin script automates
The script is a package-and-repository installer, not a complete media-server wizard. Jellyfin describes it as a way to handle repository installation and Jellyfin installation on Debian, Ubuntu and derivatives from one Bash command sequence.

- Adds the Jellyfin package repository appropriate to the detected system.
- Installs the Jellyfin package and its dependencies through the distribution package manager.
- Attempts to recognize common derivatives, including Ubuntu and Debian editions of Linux Mint, Raspbian or Raspberry Pi OS, and KDE neon.
Derivative support is version-sensitive. Jellyfin invites contributions for additional common derivatives, so an unlisted or heavily modified distribution may not be detected correctly.
Install Jellyfin with the official script
1. Download the script and checksum
Use Jellyfin’s Linux installation documentation to download both install-debuntu.sh and its accompanying install-debuntu.sh.sha256sum file into the same directory. The documented prerequisites are curl and sha256sum. Install those tools first with your distribution’s package manager if they are missing.

File transfers reach up to 125MB/s—a 1GB file takes only 8 seconds. Don't let slow clouds hold you back; they often need over 100 seconds for the same task. The difference is clear.
- Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
2. Verify the download
Before executing a privileged installer, check that the downloaded script matches Jellyfin’s published checksum:
sha256sum -c install-debuntu.sh.sha256sum
A successful check reports an OK result. If verification fails, do not run the script; download both files again and investigate the mismatch.
3. Inspect the script if you want to review it
The documentation explicitly supports inspecting the Bash source before execution:

less install-debuntu.sh
This is useful when you administer a production machine, use a derivative distribution, or want to see which repository and package commands will be run as root.
4. Run the installer
sudo bash install-debuntu.sh
The script needs administrative privileges to add repository files, install signing material and packages, and register the Jellyfin service. Follow any prompts from the package manager and note errors rather than assuming a partially completed installation is usable.
What you still configure after installation
Once the package is installed, the script has not selected your media folders or decided how clients should connect. You must still open Jellyfin’s web interface, complete the first-run setup, create an administrator account, and add libraries that point to directories the service can read.

When Docker Compose is the better route
Jellyfin recommends containers for distributions outside the script’s supported scope. The official container image is jellyfin/jellyfin, and images are published through Docker Hub and GitHub Container Registry for multiple architectures.
Compose is more portable across Linux hosts, but it replaces repository setup with explicit deployment decisions. You must provide persistent locations for configuration and cache data, mount the host directory containing your media, publish the ports clients need, and choose a restart policy. Jellyfin’s Compose example uses:

The example mounts /config, /cache and one or more media directories, and sets restart: 'unless-stopped'. It also demonstrates optional custom-font storage and the JELLYFIN_PublishedServerUrl environment variable.
Networking and DLNA
Host networking is optional for ordinary container use in Jellyfin’s Docker instructions, but it is required for DLNA in the documented Docker CLI setup. If DLNA discovery matters, plan networking before creating the container rather than trying to retrofit it after clients fail to find the server.

Windows and macOS caveat
Jellyfin’s container documentation warns that some features are unsupported when containers run on Windows or macOS, including hardware-accelerated transcoding and macOS scanning. The project recommends a native installation on those platforms instead of assuming a Linux container provides equivalent functionality.

Script or Compose? A practical comparison
| Consideration | Official script | Docker Compose |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | Supported Debian, Ubuntu and recognized derivatives | Other Linux distributions or administrators who want an isolated container deployment |
| Privilege model | Runs package and repository changes with sudo |
Requires Docker administration; container processes still need correctly chosen host permissions |
| Updates | Follow the distribution repository and package-manager update path | Pull and recreate containers according to the image tag and your Compose workflow |
| Storage | Uses the native service layout; you select media-library paths afterward | You explicitly persist /config and /cache, then mount media directories |
| Networking | Uses the host’s native service networking | You publish ports; host networking is required for DLNA in the documented setup |
| Hardware acceleration | Depends on host drivers, permissions and Jellyfin configuration | Also depends on host drivers and container device access; Windows and macOS containers lack some supported features |
Common problems and recovery steps
Checksum failure
Do not bypass a failed checksum. Remove the incomplete files, download the script and checksum again from Jellyfin’s documentation, and repeat the verification command.
Unsupported or misidentified derivative
Use Jellyfin’s documented manual repository procedure instead of forcing the script. That path installs curl and gnupg, enables Ubuntu’s Universe repository when required, installs Jellyfin’s signing key, writes the repository definition, runs sudo apt update, and installs the jellyfin metapackage.
Container starts but media is missing
Check that the host media directory is mounted into the container at the path entered in Jellyfin’s library wizard, and verify that the container’s user can read the files. A running container alone does not grant access to arbitrary host folders.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →DLNA clients cannot discover the server
Revisit the container network mode. In Jellyfin’s documented Docker setup, DLNA requires host networking; publishing the ordinary web port alone is not equivalent.
Bottom line
For a supported Debian- or Ubuntu-family system, install-debuntu.sh removes most repository and package work while retaining a sensible security step: verify and, if desired, inspect the script before running it with sudo. It does not configure your library, storage, networking policy or transcoding hardware. Choose Compose when your distribution falls outside the script’s coverage or when you deliberately want container-managed storage and deployment, and account for its mount, port, networking and platform limitations.
