Jellyfin vs. Plex: Features, Costs, Remote Access, and Privacy Compared

Jellyfin is the better fit if you want a free, open-source server that you control and that does not depend on a central account service. Plex is the stronger fit if you want a polished account-based experience, a broad set of documented apps, and personal media alongside Plex’s own free ad-supported movies, shows, and live TV.

The biggest cost distinction is remote video. Jellyfin’s server and official clients are free. Plex keeps local-network personal-media playback free, but since April 29, 2025, remote playback of personal video in several affected apps requires Plex Pass on the server administrator or viewer, or a Remote Watch Pass on the viewer. That rule does not apply to remote music in Plexamp or photos in Plex Photos.

Jellyfin vs. Plex at a glance

Question Jellyfin Plex
Is the server free? Jellyfin says its server and official clients are free to download, now and always. Plex says the Plex Media Server is free to use, with some features and remote-video cases requiring a paid pass.
Local personal-media playback Free on supported clients. Free on the same local network under Plex’s current support policy.
Remote personal-video playback No Jellyfin subscription tier is required by the project. On affected apps, the server administrator or viewer needs Plex Pass, or the viewer needs Remote Watch Pass.
Privacy and accounts Self-hosted and project-described as having no tracking, phone-home, or central servers collecting user data. Account-connected for remote access and some online features; optional sync features associate account and title metadata.
Clients Official clients are available, but the material reviewed does not provide a current, complete device matrix. Plex documents browser, mobile, desktop, smart-TV, streaming-device, and game-console clients; exact support depends on device and version.
Hardware transcoding Documentation covers compatible modern Intel, AMD, Nvidia, Apple, and Rockchip hardware. Hardware-accelerated streaming is listed as a Plex Pass benefit when compatible server hardware is available.
Integrated extras Media libraries for movies, shows, music, Live TV/DVR, books, and photos are part of the project’s stated scope. Personal libraries plus free ad-supported Movies & Shows and Live TV, with paid features such as DVR recording, downloads, and intro or credit skipping.

Neither platform is universally better. Your decision turns on where you watch, whether anyone watches from outside your home, how much account dependence you accept, and whether your server must transcode difficult files.

What Jellyfin and Plex actually are

Jellyfin: a self-hosted, open-source media system

Jellyfin describes itself as a free-software media system. You install the server on hardware you control, point it at your media, and use client applications on televisions, phones, browsers, or other devices. Its stated use cases include movies, television shows, music, Live TV and DVR, books, and photos. There is no premium license tier in the project’s positioning.

  • HD streaming made simple: With America’s number 1 TV streaming platform,* exploring popular apps—plus tons of free movies, shows, and live TV—is as easy as it is fun. *Based on hours streamed—Hypothesis Group
  • Compact without compromises: The sleek design of Roku Streaming Stick won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.
  • No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.
  • Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
  • TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.

That architecture gives you direct responsibility for storage, user accounts, updates, backups, network exposure, and remote access. It also means that a Jellyfin installation is not a hosted streaming subscription: your own computer, NAS, or other server must remain available when you want to watch.

Plex: personal media plus an account-connected service

Plex combines a Plex Media Server library with Plex’s separate free ad-supported Movies & Shows and Live TV services. Plex documents server software for Windows, macOS, Linux, NVIDIA SHIELD, and many NAS devices, along with clients for browsers, Android and iOS, desktop platforms, smart TVs, streaming devices, and game consoles.

The broad catalog of documented clients is useful when a household watches on several brands of television or streaming box. Compatibility remains product- and version-specific, so verify the exact model and operating-system version rather than assuming that every Plex feature works on every device.

Cost: free server does not mean identical free use

What is free in Jellyfin

Jellyfin states that “The Jellyfin server and official clients are free to download, now and always.” That covers the software itself. You still pay for electricity, storage, network service, and any hardware you choose to buy. If you expose the server to the internet, you also take on the work of securing and maintaining it.

What is free in Plex

Plex says, “The Plex Media Server is free to use.” Personal-media playback on the same local network is free under its support documentation. Plex also supplies free ad-supported Movies & Shows and Live TV, which are separate from files in your personal library.

Several capabilities are tied to Plex Pass. Plex lists remote streaming, hardware-accelerated streaming, downloads for offline use, DVR recording of over-the-air broadcasts with a compatible tuner and antenna, intro and credit skipping, and premium Plexamp features among Plex Pass benefits. Plex also offers Remote Watch Pass as a narrower remote-streaming option; Plex says that pass does not include the other Plex Pass benefits.

The sources used here do not establish current Plex Pass or Remote Watch Pass prices by country. Check the checkout page for your region before treating either as a fixed monthly, annual, or lifetime cost.

Plex remote video: the rule that changed on April 29, 2025

Do not reduce Plex’s policy to “remote access is paid.” The rule depends on the media type, the app, and which account has a pass.

When remote personal video needs a pass

For affected apps, Plex requires one of these arrangements when the player cannot connect to the server on the same subnet or local network:

  1. The administrator of the Plex Media Server has Plex Pass.
  2. The viewer’s Plex account has Plex Pass.
  3. The viewer has a Remote Watch Pass.

A Plex Pass held by the server administrator covers remote personal-video playback for users accessing that server. A viewer’s Remote Watch Pass is tied to that viewer’s account and is the narrower option; it does not provide the other Plex Pass benefits.

The affected-app list includes Android, iOS, PlayStation, Plex desktop applications, Roku, supported smart TVs, the web app, and Xbox. Plex says additional apps may be added. Check the current policy for your exact client before relying on a no-cost remote setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What counts as remote

Plex evaluates whether the player can make a local connection to the server. Network configuration can make a setup that feels local count as remote. Plex specifically notes that VPNs, containers, and local-connection settings can affect this determination. A viewer on another household’s internet connection will normally be outside the server’s local subnet, but unusual routing can change the result.

Exceptions for music and photos

The cited restriction is for remote personal video in affected apps. Plex says remote music in Plexamp and photos in Plex Photos are not covered by that restriction. Personal video, music, and photo playback therefore cannot be treated as one identical entitlement.

Privacy and account dependence

What Jellyfin claims

Jellyfin’s project homepage states: “Jellyfin has no tracking, phone-home, or central servers collecting your data.” It also says that Jellyfin does not run servers for users. Those statements support describing Jellyfin as self-hosted and privacy-oriented according to the project’s own description.

Self-hosting is not an automatic privacy guarantee. Your router, reverse proxy, remote-access method, plugins, operating system, logs, backups, and user choices can all expose information. A secure deployment still needs strong account passwords, timely updates, least-privilege access, and a plan for certificates and backups if you publish the service beyond your home.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How Plex uses accounts

Plex’s remote-access model and several online features are account-connected. One concrete example is optional watched-state and ratings synchronization. Plex’s documentation says the sync record includes the Plex account user ID, the title GUID, and the date and time when the state changed. Plex says the feature is designed so that Plex does not know what content may be located on a personal Plex server.

That is a specific description of one optional feature, not proof that Plex scans or shares every user’s entire library. The practical distinction is that Plex’s convenience features can involve a central account relationship, while Jellyfin’s project model emphasizes keeping the server and its data under your control.

Apps and device coverage

Why Plex may be easier in a mixed-device household

Plex’s support material enumerates clients across browsers, Android and iOS, desktop operating systems, smart TVs, streaming devices, and game consoles. If your household moves between several television platforms or consoles, that documented breadth can reduce the need to find an unofficial client.

“Supported” does not mean feature parity. Direct play, subtitles, downloads, live television, and user switching can vary by operating system, app release, and device hardware. Confirm your exact model and the features you need.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What can be said about Jellyfin clients

Jellyfin provides official clients and a server that streams to end-user devices, but the material available for this comparison does not supply a current, complete device matrix equivalent to Plex’s support page. Do not assume that every television, console, or streaming stick offers the same Jellyfin experience. Check the current Jellyfin client listings for your devices, and consider whether a browser or a compatible streaming box is acceptable if a native app is unavailable.

Direct play, transcoding, and HDR

Direct play is the simplest path

When a client supports a file’s container, video codec, audio codec, subtitles, resolution, and bitrate, the server can often send the original file without changing it. This is called direct play. It reduces server work and usually makes a low-power computer practical, provided your network and client can sustain the file’s bitrate.

  • Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, so you can switch from streaming to gaming with ease. Plus, it’s designed to stay hidden behind your TV, keeping wires neatly out of sight

A client may still trigger a remux or a full transcode because of an unsupported audio track, subtitle format, bitrate limit, or resolution. Test the files you actually own rather than judging a server from a single 1080p example.

Jellyfin’s documented hardware path

Jellyfin explains that clients send transcoding profiles describing capabilities such as codecs, resolutions, bitrate, and constraints. The server selects settings within its own capabilities. Its documentation covers hardware-accelerated transcoding on compatible modern GPUs from Intel, AMD, Nvidia, Apple, and Rockchip.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Jellyfin also notes an HDR caveat: HDR sources may need HDR-to-SDR tone mapping, while Jellyfin currently does not support HDR-to-HDR tone mapping or passing HDR metadata through unchanged. The exact result depends on the installed software version, driver, GPU, source format, and client.

Plex’s hardware-transcoding requirement

Plex lists hardware-accelerated streaming and transcoding as a Plex Pass feature when compatible server hardware is available. That licensing requirement is separate from whether a particular processor or graphics device is technically capable of transcoding.

No comparative speed result is established here. Performance depends on the CPU or GPU, codec, resolution, HDR path, client support, quality settings, network, and number of simultaneous streams. A claim that one platform is inherently faster would be misleading without a controlled test using the same media and hardware.

Do you need a NAS or mini PC?

You need a host, not necessarily a NAS or mini PC. Both products are personal media server options, so something must store the library and run the server while people watch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use an existing computer when

  • You already have a Windows, macOS, or Linux computer that can stay on during viewing.
  • Your clients mostly direct-play the files.
  • Your storage needs fit the computer’s internal drives or attached storage.
  • You are comfortable allowing the server application to run in the background.

Consider a NAS when

  • You want redundant or expandable storage in a dedicated enclosure.
  • Several household users need the library available without leaving a desktop powered on.
  • The NAS model and operating system support the server version and any required hardware acceleration.
  • You have a backup plan; drive redundancy is not the same as an independent backup.

Consider a mini PC when

  • You need a small, quiet, always-on host.
  • Your existing computer is unavailable or inefficient for 24-hour use.
  • You need a compatible integrated GPU or expansion path for likely transcoding workloads.
  • You can attach enough storage or connect the mini PC to a separate storage system.

Choose hardware from your actual workload: number of simultaneous viewers, highest resolution, codecs, HDR use, subtitle behavior, storage capacity, and whether viewers are local or remote. Buying a more powerful box will not solve an unsupported client codec, a poor network route, or an incorrectly configured remote connection.

Features beyond basic movie playback

Jellyfin’s broader library scope

Jellyfin’s project description includes movies, shows, music, Live TV and DVR, books, and photos. The exact setup for each category depends on your tuner, guide data, file organization, plugins, and client support. Treat those as capabilities to verify in your version rather than assuming identical behavior across all clients.

Plex’s integrated services and paid extras

Plex can place your personal library beside its free ad-supported Movies & Shows and Live TV offerings. For over-the-air DVR, Plex specifies a compatible tuner and digital antenna; reception, broadcast standards, guide data, and tuner compatibility vary by location.

Plex Pass adds the documented features listed earlier, including downloads for offline use, hardware-accelerated streaming, DVR recording, intro and credit skipping, and premium Plexamp functions. Remote Watch Pass is intentionally narrower, so select it only if remote streaming is the feature you need and you do not require the broader Plex Pass bundle.

Setup and maintenance trade-offs

A practical Jellyfin setup sequence

  1. Choose a supported host and install the Jellyfin server for its operating system.
  2. Create separate library folders for movies, series, music, books, and photos as needed.
  3. Add libraries in the server dashboard and verify metadata before inviting other users.
  4. Install a Jellyfin client or use a supported browser on each playback device.
  5. Test direct play with your largest files and deliberately test a file that requires transcoding.
  6. If remote access is needed, secure the connection with an appropriate network design, updates, strong credentials, and backups before exposing the service to the internet.

Jellyfin gives you control, but you are also the administrator. Updates, storage failures, certificates, firewall rules, and account recovery are your responsibility.

A practical Plex setup sequence

  1. Install Plex Media Server on a compatible computer, NVIDIA SHIELD, or supported NAS.
  2. Sign in with a Plex account and add the folders that contain your personal media.
  3. Install the Plex app on each television, phone, browser, streaming device, or console you intend to use.
  4. Confirm that local playback works before troubleshooting remote access.
  5. For every outside viewer, identify the exact app and whether the server administrator has Plex Pass, the viewer has Plex Pass, or the viewer needs Remote Watch Pass.
  6. Test direct play, subtitles, and any transcoding-heavy files on the real client devices.

Plex’s account model can simplify discovery and sharing, but account status and policy changes become part of your operating checklist.

Which one fits your situation?

Choose Jellyfin when most of these statements are true

  • You want the server and official clients to remain free without a premium software tier.
  • You prefer open-source software and direct control over the host and library.
  • You want to minimize dependence on a central account service.
  • Your main clients are already known to work with Jellyfin, or you are comfortable validating them.
  • You are willing to maintain the server, network security, storage, and remote-access setup.

Choose Plex when most of these statements are true

  • You value Plex’s documented range of browser, mobile, desktop, television, streaming-device, and console clients.
  • You want personal media and Plex’s ad-supported Movies & Shows or Live TV in one account-based interface.
  • You need features such as offline downloads, DVR, hardware-accelerated streaming, or intro and credit skipping and accept their subscription requirements.
  • You want remote personal-video access and are prepared to meet the current pass requirement for each affected app.
  • You prefer a managed account and sharing workflow over running every part of the service yourself.

Use this decision checklist before buying hardware

  1. List every playback device, including its model and operating-system version.
  2. Mark each viewer as local-only or remote, and note whether remote viewers use video, music, photos, or all three.
  3. Inspect your library’s codecs, resolutions, HDR formats, subtitle types, and average bitrate.
  4. Count likely simultaneous streams and identify which ones may need transcoding.
  5. Measure your available storage and decide how backups will work.
  6. Choose an existing computer, NAS, or mini PC only after these requirements are clear.
  7. For Plex, check the current regional pass terms; for Jellyfin, verify client availability and hardware support for your installed version.

Bottom line

Jellyfin is the clearest choice for a no-fee, self-hosted, privacy-oriented setup where you are comfortable managing the server and checking device compatibility yourself. Plex is the better match for a household that prioritizes a broad documented client ecosystem, account-based sharing, and integrated ad-supported streaming, provided its current remote-video and Plex Pass rules fit your viewers. The right answer to “Is Jellyfin better than Plex?” is therefore conditional: choose control and independence with Jellyfin, or convenience and ecosystem breadth with Plex.
