Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteChoose ErsatzTV if your channel plans depend on a broad mix of local media types or you want its library-and-playlist workflow. Choose Tunarr if you want a web interface centered on channels, scheduled programs and commercials, and you can provide FFmpeg. Neither product is documented as a Jellyfin plugin: each generates channel feeds that Jellyfin consumes through its Live TV tuner and guide interfaces.
This distinction matters because you are building a virtual broadcast service, not attaching a physical TV antenna. The right choice depends on the kinds of media you own, how much schedule control you need, and which runtime components you are prepared to maintain.

What “pseudo-live TV” means in Jellyfin
Pseudo-live TV turns on-demand files into continuously scheduled channels. An external application selects movies, episodes or other media, assigns them to channels, and publishes a playlist plus programme-guide data. Jellyfin then presents those feeds through its Live TV features, so viewers can open a channel and watch whatever is scheduled at that moment.
Jellyfin’s documented Live TV support includes M3U tuners and HDHomeRun tuners, with other tuner types available through plugins. It also accepts guide data from providers such as XMLTV and Schedules Direct. The tuner feed and the guide must be connected to matching channels; adding only one of them produces an incomplete setup. See the Jellyfin Live TV documentation for the server-side concepts.

This is different from receiving broadcast television. HDHomeRun hardware can capture antenna or cable broadcasts, but a library-generated channel from ErsatzTV or Tunarr does not require that hardware. In this comparison, “HDHomeRun” refers to a client connection style that can carry a generated stream into Jellyfin, not a requirement to buy a tuner.
The official instructions for both applications describe them as separate services feeding Jellyfin. Calling them “plugins” is convenient shorthand for the goal, but installing a Jellyfin server extension is not the documented integration path.
At-a-glance comparison
| Decision point | ErsatzTV | Tunarr |
|---|---|---|
| Primary role | Creates scheduled channels from media libraries and exposes M3U and XMLTV feeds to Jellyfin. | Creates live TV channels from Plex or Jellyfin media, with channel, programme, commercial and settings controls in a web UI. |
| Documented Jellyfin connection | Add the ErsatzTV M3U URL as a Jellyfin M3U tuner, then add its XMLTV URL as a guide provider. | Supports M3U and HDHomeRun-style connections; its guide recommends selecting HDHomeRun, then configuring XMLTV guide data. |
| Library kinds when synchronizing from a media server | Movies and shows are supported for Plex, Jellyfin and Emby sources. | Uses Plex or Jellyfin media; the documentation does not state an equivalent exhaustive list of library kinds. |
| Additional source kinds | Local libraries can also include music videos, other videos, songs, images and remote streams. | Not stated in the cited setup material. |
| Guide data | XMLTV feed from ErsatzTV, added in Jellyfin as a TV guide provider. | XMLTV configuration for channel guide data. |
| FFmpeg dependency | Not identified as a required component in the cited Jellyfin setup instructions. | Required for normalizing channel streams and other functions; version 6.1 is the minimum known supported release and 7.1.1 is recommended. |
| Documented caveat | No comparative performance or reliability benchmark is supplied. | The Jellyfin guide reports that some users have seen programme-boundary stability problems with M3U when Jellyfin is not transcoding or remuxing; this is a documented warning, not proof of a universal defect. |
The table describes documented interfaces, not a laboratory ranking. The available official material does not establish that one application is faster, simpler or more reliable overall.
When ErsatzTV is the better fit
You need more than movies and episodic television
ErsatzTV’s media documentation distinguishes between synchronized media-server libraries and local libraries. When it synchronizes from Plex, Jellyfin or Emby, it supports Movies and Shows. A local library can add music videos, other videos, songs, images and remote streams. That difference is decisive if a channel concept includes a music-video hour, a folder of personal clips, still-image programming or a remote stream alongside conventional films and episodes.

- Chromecast Built-in: Easily cast movies, shows, and photos from your Android or iOS device to your Android TV
- Easy Setup: Access your Google account and configure the device, language and Wi-Fi network
For example, a “Saturday morning” channel could combine locally stored music videos with television episodes, while a server-synchronized source alone would limit the available kinds to the documented Movies and Shows categories. The limitation is about the source mode, not a claim that every file in a server is unusable.
The documented Jellyfin workflow is deliberately feed-based
ErsatzTV’s Jellyfin setup specifies two feeds. First, copy the M3U URL generated by ErsatzTV and add it in Jellyfin as an M3U tuner. Second, copy the XMLTV URL and add it as a TV guide provider. Jellyfin uses the playlist for playable channel streams and the XMLTV data for programme names, times and related guide fields.
After importing, check that channel identifiers and names line up between the tuner and guide. A guide entry cannot populate a channel that Jellyfin did not import from the M3U feed, and a channel without matching guide data will appear without the schedule information you expected.

When Tunarr is the better fit
You want channel-production controls in one web interface
Tunarr describes itself as a way to “Create live TV channels from media on your Plex/Jellyfin servers, and more!” Its home page and setup material focus on configuring channels, programmes, commercials and application settings in a browser. That model suits someone designing a channel lineup with explicit programme blocks and ad or interstitial segments rather than simply exposing a playlist.
The exact range of supported media categories beyond Plex and Jellyfin libraries is not specified in the cited material, so do not assume that every ErsatzTV local-library type has a Tunarr equivalent. Confirm a required source type in Tunarr’s current documentation before reorganizing a library around it.
Choose the connection style deliberately
Tunarr’s Jellyfin guide supports both M3U and HDHomeRun-style client connections and recommends selecting HDHomeRun. The same guide covers XMLTV setup for guide data. If you choose M3U, follow the documented playlist URL and then configure the XMLTV provider in Jellyfin; if you choose the HDHomeRun-style path, use the endpoint and channel information Tunarr supplies for that mode.
Recommended Free Tools
The recommendation is a setup preference, not evidence that HDHomeRun mode is always faster or more dependable. Tunarr specifically notes that some users have experienced instability at programme boundaries with M3U in Jellyfin, apparently when Jellyfin is not transcoding or remuxing. Treat that as a condition to test in your own server: if a channel freezes or jumps when one item ends, compare the supported connection modes and inspect Jellyfin’s playback and transcoding behavior.

Plan for FFmpeg
Tunarr’s setup documentation requires FFmpeg for normalizing channel streams and other functions. It lists version 6.1 as the minimum known supported version and recommends 7.1.1. The installation documentation says Docker images include FFmpeg, while standalone binaries require you to provide a suitable FFmpeg build.
That dependency affects your deployment decision. Docker is the documented path that bundles the media-processing component; a standalone installation gives you responsibility for locating, installing and exposing a compatible FFmpeg executable. If FFmpeg is missing or outside the supported range, channel creation or playback normalization can fail even when Jellyfin itself is configured correctly.
Understand release-channel risk
Tunarr documents Docker images and standalone binaries and warns that development builds may be unstable. It also states that downgrading from a development build to a previous version is unsupported. Use a stable release for a household server unless you specifically need a development feature, and keep a configuration backup before changing release channels.
How to connect either application to Jellyfin
The names and URLs differ, but the integration has the same logical stages. Use the application’s current documentation for the exact endpoint values generated by your installation.
Best Value
- Ask to control your TV with your voice, and quickly cast your photos, videos, music and more from your phone, tablet, or PC to your TV with Chromecast built in
- Built-in Virtual Assistant – just press the mic button on the remote to get what you want
- Built-in content and entertainment including YouTube, Play Movies & TV, and more
- Support for thousands of Apps on the Play Store
- 2K resolution TV streaming
- Run the channel generator. Install and start ErsatzTV or Tunarr on a host that can reach the media files and your Jellyfin server. For Tunarr, verify that FFmpeg is available at the documented version level; Docker images include it.
- Build at least one channel. Select the source libraries, define the channel lineup and assign programmes. In ErsatzTV, ensure the source type matches the content you intend to schedule; server synchronization is documented for Movies and Shows, while local libraries support additional kinds.
- Copy the generated playlist endpoint. ErsatzTV publishes an M3U URL. Tunarr provides a client connection URL for M3U or HDHomeRun-style use.
- Add the tuner in Jellyfin. Open the server’s Live TV configuration, add the appropriate tuner type, and paste the generated endpoint. With ErsatzTV, the documented tuner is M3U. With Tunarr, follow the selected M3U or HDHomeRun-style procedure.
- Add guide data. In Jellyfin’s Live TV guide-provider settings, add the application’s XMLTV URL. The guide provider and tuner must be able to reach the generator over the network.
- Map and refresh channels. Map XMLTV entries to the imported channels, save, and refresh the guide. Check that programme times use the intended server time zone and that the channel names or IDs correspond.
- Play a channel while an item changes. Test a short programme boundary before inviting other viewers. This catches URL, guide, transcoding and boundary-transition problems that a static channel list cannot reveal.
Choosing by the media library you already have
| Your situation | Most defensible starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Your collection is primarily movies and TV shows in Jellyfin. | Either; decide by interface and runtime preference. | Both documented paths target library-generated channels and feed Jellyfin through tuner and guide interfaces. |
| You need local music videos, songs, images, personal clips or remote streams. | ErsatzTV. | Its media documentation explicitly lists these additional local-library kinds. |
| You want channels assembled with programme blocks, commercials and settings in a web UI. | Tunarr. | Those controls are central to Tunarr’s documented product description. |
| You want to avoid managing a separate FFmpeg installation. | Tunarr in Docker, if Docker suits your host. | Tunarr’s Docker images include FFmpeg; standalone binaries require a user-supplied build. |
| Your Jellyfin setup has troublesome M3U programme transitions. | Test Tunarr’s HDHomeRun-style path or adjust playback/transcoding before judging. | Tunarr documents reports of M3U boundary instability under conditions where Jellyfin is not transcoding or remuxing. |
| You need a proven performance or reliability winner. | Neither can be selected from the cited documentation alone. | No independent benchmark or comparative reliability figure is supplied. |
Guide data, time zones and channel maintenance
An M3U feed answers “what stream belongs to this channel?” XMLTV answers “what programme is scheduled, and when?” Keep both feeds available. If a channel plays video but has no programme names, inspect the XMLTV provider and channel mapping rather than rebuilding the media schedule first.
Generated channels are time-sensitive. A server clock, container time zone and Jellyfin time-zone setting that disagree can shift programme boundaries or make a guide appear empty at the current time. Set the host and containers to the intended zone, refresh the guide after changing schedules, and verify one known programme against the displayed start time.
When you rename a channel or recreate it, treat the channel identifier as a possible mapping change. Re-run the guide mapping and remove stale entries so Jellyfin is not displaying an old XMLTV record beside a newly generated stream.
Troubleshooting branches
Jellyfin imports no channels
- Open the generated M3U or client endpoint from the Jellyfin host’s network context, not only from your desktop.
- Confirm that the generator is running and that its port is reachable through the host firewall or container network.
- For ErsatzTV, verify that the channel has media from a supported source kind; a server-synchronized library containing only unsupported categories will not produce the expected lineup.
Channels play but the guide is blank
- Check that the XMLTV URL is configured as a guide provider, not as a tuner.
- Refresh the guide and map XMLTV channels to the corresponding imported tuner channels.
- Check server and container time zones if programmes appear outside the current schedule window.
Playback stops or changes badly at programme boundaries
- For Tunarr, note the documented M3U boundary caveat and test the HDHomeRun-style connection.
- Check whether Jellyfin is transcoding or remuxing the stream and whether the host can sustain that workload.
- Test several transitions; one malformed source file can mimic a channel-level problem.
Tunarr reports a media-processing error
- Verify FFmpeg is installed and discoverable when using a standalone binary.
- Check the version against Tunarr’s documented minimum of 6.1 and recommendation of 7.1.1.
- If using Docker, confirm you are running an image that includes FFmpeg and that the container can read the selected media paths.
A practical decision rule
Start with your hardest requirement, not the easiest demo. If the channel must include local media categories beyond movies and shows, ErsatzTV has the clearer documented fit. If the channel is a curated lineup of Plex or Jellyfin programmes and you value channel, commercial and schedule controls in a web interface, Tunarr is the more natural first trial—provided FFmpeg is part of your deployment plan.
Whichever you choose, treat the application as a feed generator and Jellyfin as the Live TV client. Configure the playlist and XMLTV guide together, test a real programme transition, and document the URLs and mappings so a later library or container change does not silently remove your channels.
