Jeff Van Note, the longtime Atlanta Falcons center who made six Pro Bowls, has died at age 80. The Falcons announced his death on October 2, 2026; the team did not announce a cause of death, according to the Associated Press report published by NFL.com.
Who was Jeff Van Note?
Van Note spent all 18 of his NFL seasons with Atlanta, playing from 1969 until his retirement in 1986. He appeared in 246 games and earned six Pro Bowl selections. The Falcons say those six selections tied Claude Humphrey for the most by a player in franchise history, and that Van Note was named AP second-team All-Pro twice.
His career was defined by durability as well as honors. The Falcons’ Ring of Honor profile lists 155 consecutive games played, a club record, and 18 seasons, also a team mark. The Falcons report 225 starts; the AP account reports 226 starts in 246 games, so the sources differ by one.
How did Van Note reach the Falcons’ starting center job?
Van Note arrived in Atlanta after playing college football at Kentucky. He joined the Falcons as a linebacker after the team drafted him in the 11th round, 262nd overall, following the 1968 season. Head coach Norm Van Brocklin asked him to move to center, and Van Note won the starting job in 1970.
