Choose JBL Cove P1 if you want a networked home speaker with Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, AirPlay and smart-home features. Choose JBL Charge 6 if you want a Bluetooth-first portable speaker with IP68 protection, a built-in power bank and JBL’s listed maximum playback claim of up to 28 hours. This is a model-level comparison: “Cove” means Cove P1, while “Charge” means Charge 6. Earlier Charge models have different specifications.

There is no controlled listening test behind this comparison, so it does not declare one speaker better-sounding. The practical choice depends on where you listen, which connections you need, how much protection you require and whether charging another device matters.

Start with the exact models

Product-family names are the first source of confusion. JBL’s current Cove page identifies the product as Cove P1, a portable Wi‑Fi home speaker. JBL’s current Charge page identifies the product as Charge 6, a portable Bluetooth speaker. The word “Charge” has also been used for multiple generations, so a listing that says only “JBL Charge” is not specific enough for a meaningful comparison.

The specifications below come from JBL’s official product pages: Cove P1 and Charge 6. They are manufacturer claims rather than independent measurements.

What Cove P1 is designed to do

A home speaker that can also travel

JBL positions Cove P1 as a portable Wi‑Fi home speaker. That wording matters: Wi‑Fi allows the speaker to participate in a home network rather than relying solely on a phone’s Bluetooth connection. For listeners who move between rooms, use network-based playback or want smart-home control, this is the defining feature.

Cove P1 also accepts Bluetooth connections, so it is not limited to network playback. JBL lists AirPlay, Alexa and support through the JBL One app. Dolby Atmos is listed as a feature as well. Those capabilities make Cove P1 the more feature-oriented option for a home listening setup, provided the services you use are available in your region and work with your network.

Wireless and wired sources

The product page lists Bluetooth 5.3 and USB audio. JBL adds a regional caveat for USB playback, so confirm that the function is enabled for the market in which you buy the speaker before treating it as a guaranteed input. AirPlay is listed for compatible Apple-device playback. Alexa support is relevant to households already using that assistant, while the JBL One app provides the manufacturer’s software control point.

Protection and endurance

Cove P1 carries an IP56 rating and JBL lists up to 14 hours of music playback. IP56 and IP68 are different protection classifications; the numbers should not be treated as interchangeable. JBL does not present Cove P1 as the same kind of waterproof, drop-proof outdoor product as Charge 6, so choose it for a home-first environment where Wi‑Fi and smart features matter more than maximum ruggedness.

What Charge 6 is designed to do

Bluetooth-first portability

JBL describes Charge 6 as a portable waterproof and drop-proof Bluetooth speaker. Its listed Bluetooth version is 5.4, and the page highlights a straightforward portable profile rather than Wi‑Fi, AirPlay or a voice-assistant feature set. If your usual source is a phone, tablet or computer over Bluetooth, the connection model is simple: pair the source and play without placing the speaker on a home network.

Longer stated battery life

JBL lists up to 28 hours of maximum music playback for Charge 6, twice Cove P1’s listed “up to 14 hours.” Both are maximum manufacturer claims under conditions that JBL does not specify on the cited pages. Volume, content, wireless activity and other settings can affect actual runtime, so use the numbers to compare the products’ stated endurance rather than as a guarantee of a particular listening session.

Charging other devices

Charge 6 includes a power-bank function according to JBL. That makes it useful when a phone needs emergency power at a campsite, park or travel stop. The product page lists a strap in the package and says a charging cable is not included. Account for that omission when packing: you need a compatible cable and a suitable charger already available.

Protection for demanding locations

Charge 6 carries an IP68 rating, and JBL calls it waterproof and drop-proof. The higher rating is the clearest reason to favor Charge 6 for locations where exposure to water, dust or accidental knocks is a routine possibility. The rating does not remove the need to follow JBL’s care and charging guidance, particularly after the speaker has been exposed to water.

Connectivity: Wi‑Fi flexibility versus simple Bluetooth

When Cove P1’s Wi‑Fi is useful

Choose Cove P1 when your listening routine is centered on a home network. Wi‑Fi can keep playback tied to the household setup instead of requiring the phone to remain the active Bluetooth source. AirPlay support adds a network playback path for compatible Apple devices, and Alexa support can fit a voice-controlled home. The JBL One app is the listed management app.

These features add setup decisions. You need a suitable Wi‑Fi network, compatible accounts or devices for the services you intend to use, and regional availability for functions such as USB playback. If you only want to press play from a phone, the extra network layer may not provide a practical advantage.

When Charge 6’s Bluetooth focus is better

Charge 6 suits a bring-it-anywhere routine: pair a source, play music and take the speaker away from the home network. Bluetooth 5.4 is the listed connection version. JBL does not list Wi‑Fi or AirPlay for Charge 6 on the cited page, so do not buy it expecting Cove P1’s networked features.

Auracast appears on both pages

JBL lists Auracast for both Cove P1 and Charge 6. That gives each model a current broadcast-audio capability, but the presence of a feature name alone does not establish identical range, simultaneous-device behavior or compatibility with every transmitter. Verify the specific Auracast use case and supported devices you plan to connect.

Durability and portability decisions

Reading the IP ratings correctly

Cove P1 is rated IP56; Charge 6 is rated IP68. These codes represent different dust and water protection test categories. They are not battery or sound-quality ratings, and an IP number does not describe every real-world situation. Treat Charge 6 as the model intended for more severe exposure because JBL explicitly markets it as waterproof and drop-proof, while Cove P1 is presented as a portable home speaker.

  • Wireless Bluetooth streaming
  • 12 hours of playtime
  • IPX7 waterproof
  • Pair multiple speakers with party boost

Where each speaker fits

  • Bedroom, office or living room: Cove P1’s Wi‑Fi, AirPlay, Alexa and app support can be more valuable than maximum ruggedness.
  • Backyard, beach day or travel: Charge 6’s IP68 rating and drop-proof positioning are better aligned with mobile use.
  • Work bag or day trip: Charge 6’s listed strap and power-bank feature reduce the number of separate accessories you may need, although you must bring your own charging cable.
  • Mixed home-and-outdoor use: Decide which environment is the one that creates the greatest risk. A networked feature set does not compensate for choosing a less suitable protection rating.

Battery, charging and power-bank trade-offs

Compare the claims, not an assumed test result

The headline figures are 14 hours maximum for Cove P1 and 28 hours maximum for Charge 6. JBL does not state the test volume, content, connection mode or other conditions on the cited pages. Do not convert either number into a promise that the speaker will last exactly that long in your routine.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a daily desk or room speaker, 14 hours may already cover several listening sessions before recharging. For travel without regular access to an outlet, Charge 6’s longer listed maximum provides more margin. The meaningful question is how often you can recharge, not simply which number is larger.

Power-bank use changes the calculation

Charge 6 can charge another device through its listed power-bank function. Energy sent to a phone is energy that cannot be used for music, so using the feature will affect the speaker’s remaining runtime. Cove P1’s cited page does not list a power-bank function; do not assume that a USB-related feature means it can recharge a phone, especially because JBL’s USB-audio note concerns playback and varies by region.

Plan for the box contents

JBL says Charge 6 includes a strap and does not include a charging cable. The cited material does not state Cove P1’s complete box contents. Check the regional product page or retailer listing for the exact package before your first trip, and make sure your cable and charger match the speaker’s requirements.

Sound information: what the published specifications can and cannot tell you

Charge 6 has more published output detail

JBL lists a 30 W RMS woofer and 15 W RMS tweeter for Charge 6, along with a frequency response of 56 Hz–20 kHz at -6 dB. RMS figures describe the stated amplifier power for the specified drivers; they do not by themselves predict perceived loudness, bass impact or clarity in your room.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cove P1’s cited page emphasizes features instead

The cited Cove P1 material does not provide comparable RMS output or frequency-response figures. That means a table cannot fairly declare one model more powerful from the available specifications. Cove P1’s Dolby Atmos listing describes a supported feature, not a controlled measurement of its spatial effect.

Why wattage is not a loudness score

JBL’s own comparison guidance warns: “Always be careful comparing the wattage of speakers. For example, a speaker of 100W will not be twice as loud compared to a 50W speaker!” Read the full guidance at JBL’s Bluetooth-speaker comparison page. Because there is no controlled head-to-head listening evidence here, choose by connectivity, protection and power needs rather than treating the Charge 6 wattage figures as a sound-quality verdict.

Choose by listening situation

You want a networked home system

Pick Cove P1 when Wi‑Fi is a requirement rather than a bonus. Its listed combination of Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, AirPlay, Alexa, Dolby Atmos, Auracast and JBL One app support addresses a broader home-use brief than a Bluetooth-only speaker. Confirm that your phone, network and preferred services support the features you plan to use.

You want the simplest phone-to-speaker routine

Pick Charge 6 when Bluetooth is all you need. Its product positioning is explicit, its listed Bluetooth version is newer than Cove P1’s, and there is no need to build the decision around a home Wi‑Fi network. This is the cleaner fit for listeners who move between locations and sources.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You expect water, dust or drops

Pick Charge 6. IP68 plus JBL’s waterproof and drop-proof description makes it the appropriate choice for a more exposed environment. Cove P1’s IP56 rating is not equivalent, so do not select it solely because both products are described as portable.

You need to top up a phone

Pick Charge 6 because JBL lists a power-bank function. Bring a charging cable, since JBL says one is not included. If you rarely charge other devices, this feature should not outweigh a genuine need for Cove P1’s Wi‑Fi and smart-home capabilities.

You use AirPlay or Alexa

Pick Cove P1, subject to regional and account compatibility. Those features are listed for Cove P1 and are not listed for Charge 6 on the cited product page. The distinction is about platform support, not an independent claim that one speaker sounds better.

A practical decision checklist

  1. Write down the primary source. If it is a home network, AirPlay or Alexa, start with Cove P1. If it is a phone or tablet over Bluetooth, Charge 6 remains the simpler match.
  2. Mark the harshest location. For regular water, dust or drop exposure, prioritize Charge 6’s IP68 rating and JBL’s waterproof, drop-proof positioning.
  3. Decide whether charging another device matters. Select Charge 6 only if its power-bank function solves a real need; otherwise, do not let it substitute for a required network feature.
  4. Set a realistic battery expectation. Use 14 and 28 hours as JBL’s maximum claims, not guaranteed runtimes. Consider how often you can recharge and whether you will use the power bank.
  5. Verify the model number before paying. The listing should say Cove P1 or Charge 6. “JBL Charge” alone may refer to a different generation.
  6. Check regional details. Confirm USB playback availability for Cove P1 and package contents, especially the charging cable, for the exact country listing.

Do not confuse Charge 6 with older Charge speakers

The Charge name covers products with materially different specifications. JBL’s Charge 5 page lists Bluetooth 5.1, IP67, PartyBoost and up to 20 hours of playback. Those details belong to Charge 5, not Charge 6.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The original Charge page describes a built-in USB charging port and more than 12 hours of playback. It is an older product and should not be used as evidence for the current Charge 6 feature set. PartyBoost, IP67 and 20 hours are not interchangeable with Charge 6’s Auracast, IP68 and up-to-28-hour claims.

When comparing a retailer’s listing, inspect the model number, generation, connection version and protection rating. A lower price may reflect an older Charge model rather than a like-for-like alternative to Charge 6.

What this comparison does not establish

  • It does not establish a winner for sound quality, bass, stereo imaging or maximum perceived loudness; no controlled comparative listening result is available.
  • It does not guarantee either battery figure in your conditions; both are JBL maximum claims with test conditions not stated on the cited pages.
  • It does not confirm that every Cove P1 USB-audio function is available in every country; JBL includes a regional caveat.
  • It does not prove that every Auracast transmitter, receiver or multi-speaker arrangement will behave identically with both models.
  • It does not establish current retailer inventory, pricing or warranty terms. Those vary by country and date and should be checked on the exact listing.

Bottom-line recommendation by buyer type

If your priority is… Better fit Reason
Wi‑Fi, AirPlay or Alexa at home Cove P1 Those network and smart-home features are listed for Cove P1.
Bluetooth portability with maximum stated endurance Charge 6 JBL lists Bluetooth 5.4 and up to 28 hours maximum playback.
Water and dust protection Charge 6 IP68 and JBL’s waterproof, drop-proof positioning.
Charging a phone from the speaker Charge 6 Power-bank functionality is listed.
Voice-assistant or AirPlay integration Cove P1 Alexa and AirPlay are listed; they are not listed for Charge 6.
Older Charge-family pricing Check the exact generation Charge 5 and the original Charge have different connection, protection and battery specifications.

The short answer remains use-case based: Cove P1 is the networked, smart-home-oriented choice; Charge 6 is the tougher, longer-running Bluetooth portable with a power bank. Neither model should be selected as a sound-quality champion without independent, controlled listening evidence.
