JBL Cove Is a New Sonos Rival—but Early Listening Isn’t a Verdict

JBL Cove is a new three-speaker Wi-Fi audio system positioned to compete for the same whole-home listening space as Sonos. Its range includes a compact speaker, a portable model and a flagship with Dolby Atmos support. Early demo coverage found promising spatial effects, but neither a controlled comparison with Sonos nor a full review has established that Cove sounds better.

What is JBL Cove?

HARMAN announced JBL Cove on September 1, 2026, as a whole-home Wi-Fi speaker system. The three models—Cove M1, Cove P1 and Cove X1—can each be used alone, paired for stereo or added to a multi-room setup managed through the JBL One app.

The system is aimed at listeners who want speakers in multiple rooms, with a mix of streaming options and physical controls. JBL lists Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, AirPlay 2, Google Cast, Roon Ready, Spotify Connect, Tidal Connect and Qobuz Connect. It also lists Alexa Built-In, access to Alexa+, and Spotify Tap through the Moment button. These are manufacturer-listed features; support and availability can depend on the service, device and software.

Which JBL Cove model fits your room?

Model Best fit Speaker configuration and formats Portability and durability
Cove M1 Compact stationary listening; stereo pair or multi-room use Three tweeters and one 4-inch woofer; Dolby Atmos not listed No battery or IP rating listed by JBL
Cove P1 Portable listening, including indoor and outdoor use Three 30 mm tweeters, one 20 mm up-firing tweeter and one 4-inch woofer; Dolby Atmos supported according to JBL Battery-powered, rated for up to 14 hours by JBL; IP56 rating and recharge dock
Cove X1 Flagship placement and larger-room listening, according to JBL’s positioning Four 30 mm tweeters, including one up-firing, and two 4-inch woofers; Dolby Atmos supported according to JBL No battery or IP rating listed by JBL

JBL lists automatic room calibration, Constant Sound Field, AI Sound Boost, stereo pairing and whole-home audio across all three models. Those are feature claims, not independently established measurements of how well the speakers perform in different rooms.

How much do JBL Cove speakers cost?

At launch, HARMAN listed US prices of $229.95 for the M1, $399.95 for the P1 and $449.95 for the X1, with availability announced for September 13, 2026. The JBL US shop showed the same individual prices. What Hi-Fi reported UK prices of £200, £400 and £430, and euro prices of €230, €450 and €500, respectively, with availability in black or white from October 2026. These are launch-era prices and reported market details; check local retailers for current pricing, stock and exact availability.

What early listening suggests—and what it doesn’t

SoundGuys’ September 1 demo

After hearing the speakers at a New York City demonstration, SoundGuys writer Dave Carr described the P1 as especially versatile. He said the up-firing tweeters on the P1 and X1 gave Dolby Atmos tracks noticeable spatial depth in that demo, and liked the width from a stereo pair of M1 speakers. These are listening impressions from a product demonstration, not controlled measurements.

Carr said there was not enough time to assess automatic room calibration, Constant Sound Field or AI Sound Boost, and deferred buying advice pending further testing. Those limits matter: a short demo can suggest what to investigate, but it cannot establish how a system performs across rooms, music or extended listening.

Tom’s Guide’s September 30 preview

Erin Bashford’s Tom’s Guide hands-on preview describes using the app for initial Wi-Fi setup and button configuration, then controlling the speakers over the same Wi-Fi network without a JBL account. The article also describes the Moment button and moving playback between rooms or groups. Bashford says proper testing is still to come, so this is a preview rather than a completed review.

Does JBL Cove work with Sonos?

The launch information documents no Sonos integration or cross-compatibility. Cove and Sonos are comparable as whole-home audio systems, but the available launch and hands-on coverage does not establish that Cove works with Sonos equipment, or that one system outperforms the other.

For an actual system comparison, consider the rooms you need to cover, whether you want a portable speaker, which streaming services and controls matter to you, and what equipment you already own. The available third-party coverage is early listening, not a controlled Cove-versus-Sonos sound or reliability test.

Can JBL Cove connect to a JBL soundbar?

JBL says Cove works with compatible JBL Bar Series MK2 soundbars, but the supported use differs by speaker. The launch announcement says the P1 and M1 can be added as rear channels. Its specifications describe X1 integration with Bar MK2 for multi-room music only. Check the exact Bar model and speaker combination before planning a setup; the announcement does not establish that every Cove speaker works in every soundbar configuration.

How do setup and room-to-room controls work?

JBL describes setup through the JBL One app and promotes a three-step process without an account. In Bashford’s reported setup, the app was needed initially for Wi-Fi setup and button configuration; after that, speakers could be controlled on the same Wi-Fi network without a JBL account. That is one writer’s experience, not a guarantee for every household, network or software version.

JBL calls its room-to-room playback feature “Music Follows Me”: its announcement says to press and hold the Moment button to move playback. Tom’s Guide describes a “Follow me” function and a separate “break-in” button feature for moving between groups. The descriptions indicate that physical controls are part of the system, but do not establish every supported transition or how the features behave in all configurations.

What to make of the Sonos comparison

The Sonos framing is understandable: both names sit in the multi-room audio conversation, and SoundGuys noted Cove’s restrained appearance as similar to Sonos. But similarity in category or design is not evidence of a sound-quality win. Cove’s lineup gives buyers a portable option, stated Atmos support on two models and broad listed streaming support; whether those strengths add up to a better fit depends on the listener’s rooms, devices and priorities.

For now, treat the system as a credible new option to evaluate, not a proven Sonos-beater. The early listening reports identify promising features and questions for fuller testing; they do not yet supply the evidence needed for a winner.
