Identify javart.dll before repairing it
| Item | Verified identification |
|---|---|
| File | javart.dll |
| Description | Microsoft Runtime Library for Java |
| Publisher | Microsoft Corporation |
| Component | Microsoft Java Virtual Machine, also called Microsoft VM or MSJVM |
| Architecture | Win32, 32-bit |
| Historical location | Usually %WINDIR%System32 on 32-bit Windows |
| Modern status | Obsolete, unsupported and no longer distributed by Microsoft |
Microsoft included MSJVM with older Windows releases and Internet Explorer versions, including Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, Windows XP and Internet Explorer 6 and earlier. It was not the same runtime as current Java installations.

Microsoft documentation identifies MSJVM as a Win32 runtime and explains its historical distribution and withdrawal. See Microsoft’s MS00-059 security bulletin, MS02-013 security bulletin and MS05-037 security bulletin.
A program may show one of these loader messages:
- “This application failed to start because javart.dll was not found.”
- “The program can’t start because javart.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The file javart.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “Error loading javart.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Cannot find javart.dll.”
- “javart.dll access violation.”
These are observed Windows loader variations rather than a complete Microsoft-certified list. The important clue is the executable that displays the message. That program, not necessarily Windows itself, is usually requesting the old runtime.

Why the file may be missing
Several different problems can produce the same message.
The program needs discontinued Microsoft Java
An old business program, installer, browser applet, diagnostic tool or Windows utility may have been built specifically for MSJVM. Installing a current Java Runtime Environment does not recreate javart.dll, Microsoft’s Java classes or its extensions.
Microsoft later removed MSJVM from Windows products and stated that removal was permanent. Microsoft recommended moving away from MSJVM, whose end of life was documented as December 31, 2007. On current Windows, the absence of this file may therefore be normal.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe application’s installation is incomplete
The program may have been copied from another computer, restored from an incomplete backup or damaged during an upgrade. A single missing runtime file can also indicate that several matching MSJVM files are absent.
Historical MSJVM installations commonly included files such as msjava.dll, javaprxy.dll, javacypt.dll, javaee.dll and jview.exe. Replacing only javart.dll can leave the installation in a mismatched state.
Security software quarantined a file
Antivirus software may have removed or quarantined an old runtime component. This is only a possibility, not proof that the file is safe. Before restoring anything, check the file’s original location, publisher information and the application that used it.
Windows or installation media is damaged
A failed Windows upgrade, damaged recovery image, disk problem or unreadable installation disc can leave older system files incomplete. This is more relevant on a genuinely supported legacy Windows installation than on Windows 10 or Windows 11, where MSJVM is not a built-in component.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe program and operating system are incompatible
A 32-bit application may be looking for a 32-bit Microsoft runtime that does not exist on the current system. Copying that file into both System32 and SysWOW64 does not make the application compatible.
On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains native 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 is used for many 32-bit system components. The correct location depends on the operating system, installer and calling process. Do not use arbitrary DLL placement as a compatibility strategy.
Step 1: Find the program requesting the file
Do this before repairing Windows.
- Reproduce the error and write down the complete message.
- Note the window title and the name of the program or installer showing it.
- Right-click the program’s shortcut and select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, check the Target field.
- Record the executable name and its full path.
- If the error appears during startup, open Settings with
Windows + I. - Select Apps, then Startup, and identify recently enabled legacy programs.
- Check Settings > Apps > Installed apps for the application’s publisher and installation date.
If the message appears only when opening one old application, repair that application first. If it appears during Windows startup, inspect startup entries and scheduled tasks rather than immediately copying a DLL.
Also record:
- Windows edition and build
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit
- The application’s full path
- The exact error wording
- Any crash signature or Event Viewer entry
- The location and properties of any existing
javart.dll - Antivirus protection history
To check the Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System, then About.
- Look at System type under Device specifications.
Step 2: Repair or reinstall the affected application
This is the safest and most likely fix when one program requests javart.dll.
Use the application’s repair option
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
Some classic desktop programs use a different path:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Change, Repair or Modify.
- Follow the installer’s instructions.
- Restart Windows and test the program.
If there is no repair option, uninstall the program, restart Windows and reinstall it from the original vendor media or a trusted installation package. Keep the installer and any product documentation. Do not download an isolated javart.dll from a file-collection page.
If the program contains a launcher with Verify files, Repair installation or Check installation, use that function before uninstalling. A complete application repair can restore matching supporting files, while a single DLL cannot.
Check whether the application is still supported
Look at the program’s Help or About screen and identify its publisher and release family. If it was designed for Windows XP or earlier, the publisher may no longer provide a current installer.
If the program is essential, preserve its original installer, activation information and data before making changes. A legacy program that depends on MSJVM may need to run inside an isolated, appropriately licensed older Windows virtual machine rather than directly on Windows 10 or Windows 11.
Step 3: Check antivirus quarantine safely
Do not immediately create an antivirus exclusion.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving the affected application or
javart.dll. - Expand the event and review the detected path and action.
- Confirm that the path belongs to the known application or historical Windows installation.
- If the file is unexpected, outside the application’s directory or unsigned, leave it quarantined and run a scan.
- If the file was part of a known legacy installation, reinstall the complete application from trusted media instead of restoring only the DLL.
To scan the current system:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Scan options.
- Choose Full scan.
- Select Scan now.
For a serious concern, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan from the same screen. Save open work first because Windows will restart during the offline scan.
Step 4: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use these commands when you suspect general Windows component corruption, not as a way to reinstall MSJVM on modern Windows. Microsoft does not include javart.dll in current Windows component stores, so successful system repair may not restore it.

- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until the verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected program again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected Windows files against that repaired store. The commands can take time and may appear to pause.
If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files, restart and test again. If it reports that it could not repair some files, repeat the process after Windows Update has completed. If it still fails, use System Restore, an in-place Windows repair or the correct original installation media.
When repeatedly hunting through Windows components and reviewing SFC or DISM results becomes impractical, Outbyte PC Repair can provide a scan showing what it identifies, while its repair functions require the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling the specific legacy application remains the definitive fix when that program owns the missing dependency.
Step 5: Install pending Windows updates
Updates will not normally add discontinued MSJVM to Windows 10 or Windows 11, but an unpatched supported system can have unrelated component or compatibility problems.
- Open Settings with
Windows + I. - Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart when prompted.
- Return to Windows Update and check again until no further updates are offered.
- Test the program.
If an old application is required for work, ask its publisher whether a supported replacement or updated installer exists. Do not interpret the absence of javart.dll after Windows Update as a failed update.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Step 6: Use System Restore when the problem is recent
System Restore can help when the file disappeared after a driver, application or Windows change. It does not guarantee that discontinued Microsoft Java will be restored, and it does not replace a complete application installation.
- Press
Windows + R. - Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
- Test the application.
System Restore can remove recently installed programs or drivers while leaving personal files in place. If no suitable restore point exists, return to application repair rather than repeatedly restoring unrelated points.
Step 7: Check the application’s dependencies and architecture
A message naming javart.dll does not prove that the file itself is the only problem. Windows may report a missing module when a dependency of that DLL is absent, the file is damaged or the calling program cannot load a 32-bit component.
Check these points:
- Is the requesting program 32-bit or 64-bit?
- Was it designed for Windows XP or an earlier release?
- Does its installer include the Microsoft Java runtime?
- Does the program require other files from the same MSJVM build?
- Is the error produced by the main program, an updater, a browser plug-in or an installer?
- Does the file’s path match the original application or historical Windows installation?
- Does the file have Microsoft publisher information in its Properties dialog?
To inspect a file:
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to the reported location.
- Right-click
javart.dll. - Select Properties.
- Review the General, Details and Digital Signatures tabs, if present.
- Do not replace or whitelist the file solely because its filename looks correct.
Historical Microsoft documents list builds such as 5.0.3177, 5.0.3318 and 5.0.3810, but the correct build depended on the Windows or Internet Explorer installation. There is no single universal version or file size that should be copied onto every computer.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Step 8: Update drivers only when the evidence points there
A display, sound or hardware driver rarely supplies javart.dll, but a legacy application can fail after a driver change or while using old multimedia components. Update drivers only when Device Manager shows a problem or the application’s crash log identifies a hardware-related fault.
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category related to the suspected device.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Review the General tab for an error code.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and date.
- Select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
For a display driver, use Display adapters. For sound, use Sound, video and game controllers. For storage problems, check Disk drives and Storage controllers.
When manually comparing hardware models and driver packages becomes the time-consuming part, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for identified driver issues, while driver installation through its full version is optional; it cannot replace the legacy Microsoft Java runtime or repair an application that specifically requires javart.dll.
If Device Manager shows no relevant error and the application clearly requires MSJVM, stop changing drivers and return to application repair or legacy isolation.

Step 9: Move the program to a controlled legacy environment
If the original application is indispensable and no supported replacement exists, a compatible legacy environment may be the practical resolution.
Use the original operating-system and application media available to you, keep the environment isolated from unnecessary network access, and protect important data outside the virtual machine. Do not expose an obsolete operating system directly to the internet merely to run an old applet.
A legacy virtual machine is appropriate when:
- The application genuinely requires Microsoft Java.
- The publisher no longer supplies a modern version.
- Repairing the application does not restore its complete runtime.
- The program works on the old Windows release for which it was designed.
- You can isolate the environment and preserve its data safely.
A virtual machine is not a reason to download an unverified javart.dll. The runtime should come from the complete original operating-system or application installation that you are authorized to use.
Why modern Java does not fix this error
Oracle Java and OpenJDK provide their own Java runtime files and do not supply Microsoft’s javart.dll. Older Microsoft applets and programs could also depend on Microsoft-specific classes, extensions and runtime behavior.

Installing a current Java package may therefore leave the exact same error unchanged. It may also cause confusion if the program has separate configuration settings for its Java runtime.
The correct question is not “Which Java version should I install?” It is “Which application is requesting Microsoft’s discontinued Java runtime, and can that application be repaired or replaced?”
What not to do
Do not download a random DLL
DLL download sites pages may provide the wrong build, wrong architecture or a modified file. The file may also be missing its companion MSJVM components. Manual copying can hide the real application damage and introduce malware.

There is no current official Microsoft javart.dll redistributable download that should be recommended. Microsoft withdrew its old MSJVM distribution resources.
Use the original application vendor’s installation media, a supported application update, Windows repair tools or an appropriately preserved legacy environment instead.
Do not copy the file into both system folders
Do not place an arbitrary 32-bit DLL in both C:WindowsSystem32 and C:WindowsSysWOW64. Those folders do not mean “all DLLs go here,” and duplicate copies can cause confusing loader behavior.
The correct file location is determined by the complete runtime, the Windows version and the calling process. Let the original installer place its files.
Do not use regsvr32 for javart.dll
regsvr32 is intended for registering certain self-registering DLLs, commonly COM or ActiveX components. A runtime library is normally loaded by the application and does not need registration.
Recommended Free Tools
Microsoft documentation discusses registering javaprxy.dll in a specific MSJVM context, not registering javart.dll as a general repair. Running a command such as this is therefore not a normal fix:
regsvr32 javart.dll
It may produce an entry-point error and will not install the missing runtime or its dependencies.
Do not disable antivirus protection permanently
If security software quarantined a file, confirm its provenance and reinstall the complete trusted package. Do not create a permanent exclusion for an unexplained DLL.
A documented historical crash
Microsoft recorded a historical Internet Explorer or Java application crash involving Javart.dll when a Java applet played sounds. The report identified version 5.0.3802.0 and a specific crash offset. This is useful evidence that the file was a real Microsoft Java runtime component, but it does not identify the correct build for every installation or provide a modern repair download. See the archived Microsoft KB 316368 entry.
FAQ
Is javart.dll a Windows system file?
It was a Microsoft Windows and Internet Explorer component on particular older releases. It is not a normal component of current Windows 10 or Windows 11, and its absence alone does not prove that modern Windows is corrupted.
Is `javart.dll the same as Java?
No. It belongs to Microsoft’s discontinued Java Virtual Machine. Oracle Java and OpenJDK are separate runtimes and do not replace it.
Can I install Microsoft Java today?
Microsoft no longer distributes MSJVM as a current supported download. If the original application requires it, use a complete trusted legacy installation or move the application to a compatible isolated environment.
Should I run SFC and DISM?
Run them when you suspect general Windows component corruption. They may repair supported Windows files, but they normally will not recreate discontinued MSJVM on Windows 10 or Windows 11.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Why does the error say a module is missing when javart.dll exists?
The file may be damaged, the calling process may have the wrong architecture, or one of javart.dll‘s dependencies may be absent. The application may also be loading a copy from an unexpected path.
Can I register javart.dll?
Normally no. javart.dll is a runtime library, not a DLL that should generally be registered with regsvr32.
What information should I give a technician or application vendor?
Provide the full error text, program name and path, Windows edition and architecture, file location, file properties, antivirus history and any Event Viewer crash signature. Also state whether the problem began after an upgrade, reinstall, application change or security event.
When should I replace the application?
Replace or migrate it when the publisher no longer supports MSJVM, the original installation cannot be recovered, or the program cannot run safely on a current operating system. Further DLL copying will not turn a discontinued runtime into a supported one.
