Japan’s Audacious Space Heist: MMX Aims to Bring Home Pieces of Mars’s Mysterious Moon Phobos

Japan’s Martian Moons eXploration (MMX) mission is designed to land on Phobos, collect material, and return it to Earth. The planned haul is more than 10 grams, a target stated in a 2024 NASA technical report on the mission’s contamination control and curation work. The scientific prize is an answer to a long-running question: are Mars’s two small moons, Phobos and Deimos, debris from a giant impact early in the planet’s history, or asteroids that Mars’s gravity captured? Official material describes MMX’s aims and hardware. It does not describe a sample that has been collected or returned.

What the “heist” means in practice

The word “heist” is the headline’s flourish, but the underlying operation is a robotic sample-return mission. A spacecraft travels to a distant body, gathers material with onboard tools, stores it, and sends it home. No crew is involved. The value lies in the material itself: once a sample is on Earth, laboratories can examine it with instruments far too large or too delicate to fly on a spacecraft.

MMX is one of the few missions designed to do this at Mars. According to the European Space Agency’s MMX factsheet, it is the first mission intended to land on Phobos and the first to return a sample from the Mars system.

MMX at a glance and who is involved

JAXA, Japan’s space agency, leads MMX. The mission is designed to explore both Phobos and Deimos, but its defining goal is the Phobos sample. ESA’s factsheet lists the collaboration as JAXA working with NASA, France’s CNES, and Germany’s DLR. The partner roles that the official sources describe in detail are summarised below. Where a source does not spell out a partner’s work, the table says so rather than guessing.

The mystery: captured asteroids or a giant impact?

Phobos and Deimos are small, irregular moons, and their origin is unsettled. JAXA’s MMX mission overview frames the question as a choice between two explanations, and states the test clearly:

“Remote-sensing observations by the MMX spacecraft and the detailed analyses of the returned sample will determine whether Phobos and Deimos are remnants of early Mars created from debris produced by a giant impact with the young planet, or whether the moons are asteroids captured by Mars’s gravity that brought material from outer Solar System.”

The two hypotheses differ in where the material came from. The table below compares them along the three lines of evidence the mission plans to use.

Question Giant-impact origin Captured-asteroid origin
Where the moons came from Debris thrown off when a large body struck young Mars, later assembled into the moons Asteroids from the outer Solar System that Mars’s gravity pulled in
What remote sensing can contribute Spacecraft observations of the moons’ structure and composition, used to judge which origin fits The same observations, used to judge which origin fits; the sources do not list the specific signatures each hypothesis predicts
What laboratory analysis of returned material can add Direct examination of the sample alongside remote data Direct examination of the sample alongside remote data

The point of the comparison is that neither hypothesis is confirmed. The mission’s stated method is to weigh spacecraft observations against the returned material, and the sources do not claim that one sample will settle every question.

How MMX plans to collect the sample

A 2024 NASA Technical Reports Server report on MMX contamination control and curation states that the mission carries two sampling systems and plans to return more than 10 grams of Phobos material. That figure is a planned target from that report, not a delivered quantity. Keeping the sample uncontaminated matters as much as collecting it, which is why the report covers curation alongside hardware.

The coring (C) sampler

The coring sampler is the first of the two systems. The NASA report attributes its development to JAXA. Its name points to extracting a core of material from the surface, but the sources reviewed do not describe its operating sequence, so this article does not add detail beyond that.

The pneumatic (P) sampler

The second system is the pneumatic sampler, which the NASA report attributes to Honeybee and NASA. “Pneumatic” refers to a system that uses gas pressure or flow to move material, but the official sources reviewed here do not describe how MMX’s unit works in operation.

What a returned sample could add

A returned sample would let researchers study Phobos material directly, not only through images, spectra, and other remote measurements. JAXA says the work is also meant to inform broader questions about Mars’s evolution. It names the way atmospheric material circulates and escapes in the Martian-moon environment as part of the mission’s science, which places Phobos inside a larger system rather than treating it as an isolated rock.

The limits are worth stating. A few grams of material, even if the full target is met, is a small sample from one moon. Its value depends on how well remote observations and lab results agree, and the official sources do not claim that either approach alone will decide the origin question.

Schedule and status

The official sources reviewed for this article establish MMX’s aims, partners, and hardware. They do not confirm a current launch date or a detailed timeline for arrival at Phobos, surface operations, or return to Earth. Earlier schedule targets should not be treated as current. Readers who need dates should check JAXA’s MMX project pages directly for the latest status.

The bottom line for now is simple: MMX is a planned robotic sample-return mission to Phobos, aimed at deciding between two origin stories for the Martian moons. It has not yet returned anything.
