Whether Japan is cheaper depends on the specific game, edition, local country, and date.
Which eShop storefront will your Switch use?
On Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch, the eShop storefront follows the country/region set on your Nintendo Account. Change that setting and the console uses the corresponding storefront the next time it connects. Nintendo explains this in its account country/region support information.

Changing country is not a harmless toggle if you have account funds or subscriptions to manage. Nintendo says balance does not carry over between countries, so you must spend any remaining balance before changing the setting. A change may also be blocked by an active auto-renewal for a membership, pass, or subscription, or by a digital preorder that has not yet been released. Nintendo’s country-change instructions also set out account-age and family-group conditions.

Is the Japanese eShop cheaper?
There is no reliable across-the-board answer. The price depends on the game, edition, Japanese and local storefront prices, and the date you compare them. A price that looks lower in yen may not remain lower after currency conversion and payment costs.
#1 Best Overall
- eCash - Nintendo eShop Gift Card $100
For a fair comparison, check the same game and edition in both storefronts on the same date. Record each displayed price and currency, convert using an exchange rate for that date, and include any card or payment fees. Also check whether the Japanese release has the content and language options you want; a matching title name does not by itself establish that the software versions or DLC are interchangeable.
Can you pay on the Japanese storefront with your local method?
Do not assume that a card accepted by your local eShop will work in Japan. Nintendo warns that a credit card issued in one region may not work in another region’s eShop. Payment acceptance is a compatibility constraint, not a guarantee that a foreign card will be accepted.

Payment routes Nintendo documents for Japan
Nintendo Japan documents credit cards and prepaid cards or numbers as ways to pay or add balance. Its Switch 2 purchase guide also lists PayPal for balance additions, but says PayPal is unavailable to accounts aged 17 or younger. Available routes can differ by device and purchase flow, so check the options shown for the specific account and transaction. See Nintendo’s Japan eShop payment support and Switch 2 purchase guide.
Using a Japan-region prepaid card
A Japan-region Nintendo eShop prepaid card or code is a possible balance route if your account is set to Japan. Nintendo says eShop cards work only in the country/region for which they are intended, and it cannot replace, exchange, or refund a card bought for another region. Before buying, verify that the card is specifically valid for Japan and that its territory matches the account. Nintendo’s regional compatibility FAQ explains the restriction.

Will Japanese games and DLC work with your existing games?
Check the region of the specific game release before buying add-on content. Nintendo’s rule is direct: “DLC will only work with games that are released for the same region as the DLC.” A Japanese DLC purchase therefore should not be assumed to work with a game copy from your local region, even when both releases have the same title. Nintendo recommends checking the game’s Support Information on the console or its packaging for region support; see its regional compatibility FAQ.
Nintendo notes an exception involving consoles and games distributed in the Chinese region, which are not compatible with consoles and games distributed in the Americas. That exception is a further reason to check the specific product’s region rather than infer compatibility from its title or language.

What changes when you redownload purchases?
Nintendo Japan says that since April 30, 2025, redownloads of purchased software and add-on content are handled through Virtual Game Cards rather than the eShop. This changes the redownload workflow; it does not change which storefront your account country selects.
Quick Recap
A practical checklist before switching countries
- Confirm the Japanese and local listings are the same game and edition, and compare them on the same date.
- Calculate the converted price using a stated exchange rate, then include payment or card fees.
- Check which payment methods the Japanese account and purchase flow actually offer; do not count on a foreign-issued card working.
- If using prepaid balance, verify the card or code is Japan-region and valid for the account.
- Check the game’s region and confirm any DLC is for that same-region release.
- Before changing your Nintendo Account country, spend its remaining balance and resolve active renewals or unreleased digital preorders that may block the change.
