While someone is choosing or converting a candidate, the text in a field can still be provisional, and Enter may confirm that candidate rather than submit a form. Track composition state, defer actions that assume final text, and test the complete typing workflow in the browsers and operating systems your app supports.
Why Japanese IME input can trigger the wrong action
An input method editor (IME) lets someone enter text through a multi-step process: they type, inspect or convert a candidate, and then commit or cancel the composition. Web apps that treat every input change as final can search or filter against unfinished text. Apps that treat every Enter key as a submit command can submit while the person is still confirming a candidate.

MDN describes compositionstart as the start of a composition session, and compositionend as the point when the session completes or is cancelled. The InputEvent.isComposing property indicates whether an input event occurs between those events. These signals provide a basis for distinguishing composition from ordinary committed input, but test their behavior at the specific events and environments your application uses.

A React repository issue opened in 2017 documents concerns about intermediate changes reaching handlers, early search or filtering, controlled-input coordination, and differences between environments. It is a historical issue report, not proof that every current React version behaves the same way. A practical article published on June 19, 2026, likewise describes Enter-to-submit and auto-search during composition as pitfalls. Treat both as implementation warnings to verify in your own support matrix.

15 engineering checks for IME-safe behavior
This is a synthesized checklist based on the documented composition lifecycle and reported failure patterns, not a standards-defined or measured ranking of fixes.
Composition state and text handling
- Track composition state. Set an application-level composing flag on
compositionstartand clear it oncompositionend. Keep the scope appropriate to the field or editor in use. - Treat active composition as provisional. Do not assume visible text is the user’s final query or message while composition is active.
- Defer final search and filtering. Avoid launching the action that depends on settled text for every intermediate composition update. Update the field promptly, but separate that value update from side effects.
- Keep controlled inputs responsive. In controlled fields, preserve and render the current value during composition rather than overwriting it with a stale or transformed value. Coordinate framework state updates with the composition lifecycle.
- Use
isComposingas a signal, not a substitute for testing. It can help keyboard and input handlers identify active composition, but confirm that it is reported as expected at the event where your code makes a decision. - Handle completion and cancellation. Composition can end because text was committed or because the session was cancelled. Check the resulting field value before running an action that assumes a candidate was accepted.
- Run the intended action once after commit. When composition ends, trigger the final search or other action at the appropriate point. Prevent both an early run and a duplicate run from overlapping event handlers.
Keyboard actions and form submission
- Do not submit unconditionally on Enter. Enter can confirm an IME candidate. A keyboard handler should account for active composition before treating Enter as a submit command.
- Check the relevant key event in each target environment. Verify whether your chosen composition signal is available and correct when Enter is pressed; do not assume event timing is identical everywhere.
- Keep keyboard intent separate from text commitment. Make sure the interface only submits when the user intends to submit, not merely because the IME used Enter to finish conversion.
Testing and editing surfaces
- Test actual Japanese IME workflows. Latin keyboard entry alone does not exercise candidate conversion, confirmation, or cancellation.
- Test supported browser and operating-system combinations. Event sequences can vary across environments. The available evidence does not establish a complete current event-order matrix for every browser, OS, and IME, so test the combinations your product declares supported.
- Cover every relevant native control. If your product uses both
<input>and<textarea>, exercise both. The React issue report discusses both kinds of controls. - Evaluate custom-editor APIs against compatibility needs. MDN marks EditContext’s composition event support as limited availability and experimental. Do not treat it as a broad-support drop-in without checking current compatibility for your users.
- Add regression cases for timing and intent. Include search or filter timing, candidate confirmation with Enter, cancellation, and ordinary post-composition submission in your IME test matrix.
Choose where side effects happen
The key design decision is whether a change in the field should immediately trigger work or only update the displayed value. For a search box, chat composer, or filter, the field generally needs to stay responsive while composition is underway; a query, send, or submit action can wait until text is committed. Keeping these responsibilities separate avoids making provisional text act like a final command.

For keyboard submission, use composition state to distinguish Enter used during candidate confirmation from Enter intended to submit. Because event sequences differ by environment, validate this distinction in the supported browser and operating-system combinations rather than assuming one event order.

The W3C Input Method Editor API specification’s non-normative introduction notes that developers can have difficulty implementing web applications involving IMEs; that context is a reason to test real workflows, not evidence that one custom API solves all compatibility problems.

A focused IME regression test
- Open each supported field or editor in a supported browser and operating system with a Japanese IME enabled.
- Type text that requires candidate selection. Confirm that the field remains usable as the composition changes.
- While composition is active, verify that search or filtering does not act on unfinished text and that Enter does not submit the form.
- Confirm a candidate and verify that the committed value is handled once by the intended action.
- Repeat with composition cancelled. Check that cancellation does not produce an unintended search, submission, or overwritten field value.
- Repeat the same cases for each relevant control type and record results by browser and operating system.
This test sequence is implementation guidance derived from the lifecycle and reported pitfalls; it is not a claim that every browser emits an identical series of events.
