Asahi Super Dry is the clearest choice for a brewery-described dry, crisp profile. Kirin Ichiban is positioned as balanced, smooth, and malt-forward. Suntory The Premium Malt’s belongs in the comparison, but its current official product details need to be checked in the market where you plan to buy it. No honest article can name one universally cheapest Japanese beer: prices depend on country, package size, retailer, date, taxes, and whether you are looking at a shop or a restaurant.
What the comparison can—and cannot—tell you
This comparison separates three kinds of information that are often mixed together: the flavor language breweries use for their products, the package and alcohol specifications listed on official pages, and the availability or price you can actually find in your market.

Asahi and Kirin’s tasting descriptions are manufacturer positioning, not results from an independent blind tasting. They are useful for choosing a starting point, but personal perception will vary with serving temperature, freshness, glassware, food, and the exact product variant. A can bought in one country may also have a different production location or label from a can sold elsewhere.

Availability and price are more volatile than a product description. An official Japanese page can confirm that a beer is sold in cans or bottles, but it cannot prove that a particular retailer in another country has stock today. Likewise, a restaurant menu can show what one venue charges for a serving; it cannot establish a national retail ranking.

Taste profiles: what each brand officially emphasizes
Asahi Super Dry: dry, crisp, and sharply finished
Asahi describes Super Dry as a dry draft beer with a smooth mouthfeel and crisp taste. Its current product description also highlights lively flavor and a sharp finish. The beer launched in 1987, and the dry-beer concept remains central to how Asahi presents it.
In practical terms, choose Super Dry when you want the brand’s stated emphasis on a clean, brisk impression rather than a rich, sweet or heavily malt-led description. “Dry” here is the brewery’s positioning; it is not a guarantee that every drinker will experience the same level of bitterness or dryness.
Kirin Ichiban: balanced, smooth, and malt-charactered
Kirin’s Japan product page calls Ichiban balanced and easy to drink. Kirin USA describes it as a 100% malted-barley beer made with the company’s First-Press method, and uses the terms smooth and rich. The United States wording is US-market brand copy, so it should not be used to infer where a particular can was brewed.
Ichiban is therefore the more natural first choice if you prefer a balanced presentation with noticeable malt character, while still wanting an easy-drinking beer. The description does not establish an independent sensory score or prove that every regional production batch tastes identical.
Suntory The Premium Malt’s: include it, but verify the current product page
Suntory The Premium Malt’s is a major Japanese beer to consider alongside Asahi and Kirin. However, the official result available for the product establishes that the brand page exists without providing enough current descriptive copy to support a precise tasting profile, alcohol percentage, package list, or price here.

That limitation matters. It is better to check the live official page and the label in your market than to assign The Premium Malt’s a flavor description based on reputation, an old listing, or a different Suntory variant. Until those details are verified, treat it as a comparison candidate rather than a fully specified entry.
Kirin Ichiban Premium is not the same beer as core Ichiban
Kirin Ichiban Premium is a separate, gift-oriented product. Kirin describes it with fragrant IBUKI hop aroma and rich malt flavor, and lists it at 5.5% ABV. Core Ichiban is listed at 5% ABV. Do not use the Premium description when deciding what a standard Ichiban can will taste like, and do not compare their prices as though they were identical products.
At-a-glance comparison
| Product | Official taste language | ABV stated on the cited product information | Formats or price language | What remains unverified |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Asahi Super Dry | Dry, crisp, smooth mouthfeel, lively flavor, sharp finish | 5% | Japan page lists cans, bottles and a 2,000 ml mini-keg; no suggested retail price is set | Live stock, local price, and the brewing location of a specific imported unit |
| Kirin Ichiban | Balanced and easy to drink; US page also says smooth and rich and identifies the First-Press method | 5% | Japan page lists multiple can and bottle sizes; price is described as open price | Live stock, local price, and the brewing location of a specific unit |
| Suntory The Premium Malt’s | Not stated sufficiently in the official result used for this comparison | Not stated | Not stated | Current official flavor copy, ABV, package sizes, origin and price must be checked |
| Kirin Ichiban Premium | Fragrant IBUKI hop aroma and rich malt flavor | 5.5% | Gift-oriented variant | Local stock and price; it is not core Ichiban |
The table reports what the cited manufacturer information establishes. It does not rank the beers by quality, sales, or independent tasting performance.
Package formats and alcohol strength
Asahi’s Japan product page lists Super Dry in cans and bottles and includes a 2,000 ml mini-keg. The same page lists 5% ABV. Kirin’s Japan page lists Ichiban in several can and bottle sizes and also lists 5% ABV. The pages confirm that these formats exist in the manufacturer’s range; they do not guarantee that every size is exported to your country or stocked by your retailer.
Package size changes the price comparison. A single small can may have a higher price per millilitre than a larger multipack, while a bottle may carry different deposit, shipping, or handling costs. Compare equal volumes before deciding that one brand is cheaper.

For Ichiban Premium, the 5.5% ABV figure applies to that named variant. It should not be copied into a listing for standard Ichiban. When buying imported beer, read the physical label or the retailer’s product-identification details to confirm the exact variant and alcohol percentage.
Availability: how to check what you can actually buy
Start with your country and city
There is no single worldwide availability answer. Japanese domestic pages document the brands and formats sold by the breweries, while importers, licensing arrangements, alcohol laws, and distribution contracts determine what reaches another country. State your market before making a buying decision: “available in Japan,” “available from US retailers,” and “available in my city” are different claims.
Use two current retailers, not one old listing
- Search for the exact product name, including “Super Dry,” “Ichiban,” or “Ichiban Premium,” and the package size.
- Check at least two retailers that legally sell alcohol in your market. Record the retailer, product description, package count, listed volume, stock status, and the date you checked.
- Confirm whether the listing is a single unit, a multipack, a gift set, or a restaurant serving. Similar photographs can conceal different quantities.
- Look for the stated country of brewing or importer information when origin matters. A brand page alone does not establish the origin of a particular can.
- Recheck stock before ordering. Imported beer can disappear between a search result and checkout, and some retailers leave inactive pages online.
Separate domestic production from local licensed production or imports
If the retailer or label identifies where the beer was brewed, record that detail alongside the price. Do not assume that every can carrying a Japanese brand name was brewed in Japan. Conversely, do not claim local production unless the listing or label explicitly establishes it. This distinction can affect shipping time, freshness expectations, taxes, and the relevance of a Japanese domestic package-size description.
Why restaurant menus are not availability surveys
A hotel or restaurant menu may list several Japanese beers at different serving prices. Those figures describe that venue, its serving size, its taxes and service model, and the date of the menu. They are useful evidence that the beers may be offered there, but they cannot prove which brand is cheapest at grocery or online retail.
Price: a fair way to compare Japanese beer
Why there is no universal “cheapest” brand
Asahi states that it does not set a suggested retail price for Super Dry. Kirin describes Ichiban as an open-price product. Those statements mean the manufacturer pages do not provide a fixed consumer price that can be applied everywhere. Retailers, wholesalers, importers, taxes, deposits, promotions, shipping charges and exchange rates can all change the amount a shopper pays.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
A menu price is even narrower: it includes the venue’s serving format and operating costs. Treating one restaurant’s price as a brand-wide ranking would compare unlike things.
Normalize by volume
Use this calculation for a like-for-like comparison:
Price per 100 ml = (listed product price ÷ total millilitres in the package) × 100.
For a multipack, multiply the volume of one unit by the number of units before calculating. Keep currency, retailer, access date, taxes, deposits, delivery fees and promotional conditions in your notes. If one listing includes shipping and another does not, show both totals or exclude shipping from both; do not silently mix the two.

Record the comparison in a simple table
| Field | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Product identity | Brand, exact variant, ABV and package count | Prevents core Ichiban being mixed with Ichiban Premium or another variant |
| Volume | Millilitres per unit and total package volume | Makes different cans, bottles and multipacks comparable |
| Price | Displayed currency and whether tax, deposit or delivery is included | Shows what the number actually represents |
| Retailer and date | Retailer name, location and date checked | Prices and stock change |
| Origin | Country of brewing or importer statement, if listed | Avoids assuming all units share one production source |
How to report missing data honestly
If a retailer does not state the package volume, do not calculate a price per 100 ml. If a product page says “open price” or gives no suggested retail price, report that wording rather than filling the gap with a price from an unrelated country. If a product is out of stock, mark availability as unavailable on the date checked instead of treating an old price as current.

Which beer should you choose?
Choose Asahi Super Dry when crispness is your priority
Super Dry is the strongest match for a shopper who wants the brewery’s dry, crisp, smooth-mouthfeel description and a sharp finish. It is also the easiest of the compared products to identify by a clearly stated 5% ABV and a documented range of cans, bottles and a 2,000 ml mini-keg on the Japan page.
Choose Kirin Ichiban when balance and malt character matter more
Ichiban fits a preference for the company’s balanced, easy-drinking description, with the US-market page adding smooth and rich language and the First-Press method. Confirm the market-specific label and package before buying, because the US description does not prove the brewing location of an individual unit.
Consider The Premium Malt’s only after checking current details
If you are comparing a Suntory product, verify the current official page, ABV, package, origin and retailer listing first. The available official result is not sufficient to make a precise sensory or price claim here.

Do not substitute Ichiban Premium for standard Ichiban
Premium is the relevant option when you specifically want the gift-oriented product described with IBUKI hop aroma, rich malt flavor and 5.5% ABV. It is a separate purchase decision from core Ichiban at 5% ABV.
A practical buying checklist
- Choose the market in which you will drink the beer.
- Decide whether you want the stated dry-and-crisp direction of Super Dry or the balanced-and-malt character of Ichiban.
- Confirm the exact variant, especially when the name includes Premium.
- Match package size and calculate price per 100 ml.
- Check at least two current retailers and record the date.
- Verify stock, country of brewing and importer information where listed.
- Separate retail prices from restaurant or hotel menu prices.
- Treat brewery tasting language as positioning, not as an independent blind-tasting result.
Bottom line for a market-specific decision
There is no evidence-based worldwide winner on taste, availability or price. Asahi Super Dry is the clearest fit for a dry, crisp profile; Kirin Ichiban is the clearest fit for balanced, smooth and malt-forward positioning; and Suntory The Premium Malt’s requires a current product-page check before its details can be stated responsibly. For cost, compare the same volume at two current retailers in your country and attach the retailer, date, taxes and package information to every figure.
