A Japanese consortium has begun operating a floating data-center demonstrator at Yokohama Port, marking a shift from a proposed offshore-computing concept to a real-world test. The 25-by-80-meter mini-float is designed to carry a containerized data center, solar generation and battery storage, with offshore wind also under consideration. Nippon Yusen (NYK Line) says the demonstration is operating on 100% renewable energy, but the partners have not disclosed its computing capacity, uptime, operating cost or commercial launch date.
What is Japan’s floating data-center project?
The project is a consortium-led demonstration of an offshore floating data center near Osanbashi Pier in Yokohama. NYK Line, NTT Facilities, Eurus Energy Holdings, MUFG Bank and the City of Yokohama signed a memorandum on March 27, 2025. Their plan places a containerized computing facility, solar panels and battery energy storage on a mini-float measuring 25 meters long by 80 meters wide. The group is also evaluating offshore wind as a possible power source.

NYK Line has overall responsibility. NTT Facilities is handling data-center design and technical verification, Eurus Energy is responsible for renewable-energy and related technical work, MUFG Bank is providing financial support, and Yokohama is coordinating with the municipality and port stakeholders.
Is it operating or still only a proposal?
It is operating as a demonstration, not as a declared commercial data-center fleet. NYK’s joint release dated March 25, 2026 says demonstration operation began at Osanbashi Pier. The release describes the unit as the world’s first offshore floating data center operated with 100% renewable energy.

A later NYK announcement on September 1, 2026 introduced a port-based offshore floating-data-center concept intended to speed practical adoption and eventually support deployment farther from shore. That announcement outlines a development path; it does not establish that a commercial offshore network or a remote-ocean facility has been completed.
Why test a data center on water?
The partners identify several pressures behind the project:

- SPECIFICATIONS: Constructed from heavy-duty cold rolled steel, the 15U server rack measures 23.7" L x 22.1" W x 33.5" H and has a 132 lbs capacity. It includes adjustable rails for 2.5 to 22.6-inch depth equipment.
- VERSATILE: Available in 9U, 12U, 15U sizes, this server rack comes with swiveling casters and handles, making it suitable for IT, telecom, and A/V environments, providing easy transport and flexibility.
- DESIGNED FOR EFFICIENCY: The data rack has top and bottom cable management slots and an open frame with side ventilation for efficient cooling. Numbered rack-mount spaces simplify equipment installation.
- PORTABLE & MOBILE: Featuring lockable casters, this IT rack is mobile and stable, suitable for spaces that frequently move network racks, server racks, or data racks.
- SAFETY & COMPLIANCE - All NavePoint products are built to industry standards.
- Rising electricity demand: Computing growth is increasing the power required by data centers, making low-carbon generation and storage more important.
- Decarbonization: The demonstration is intended to show whether computing infrastructure can run with renewable electricity rather than relying on fossil-fuel-heavy power mixes.
- Construction constraints: Conventional data centers can require long schedules, large sites and substantial construction budgets. A platform assembled through port infrastructure could offer a different delivery model.
- Resilience: A floating facility could potentially be positioned where power and network connections are available and maintained through established port logistics. The releases present these as objectives and engineering questions still being verified, not as proven advantages.
How the demonstration is expected to work
- Use a standardized platform: The 25-by-80-meter mini-float provides the physical base for the containerized data-center equipment and energy systems.
- Generate and store electricity: Solar generation supplies renewable power, while batteries buffer fluctuations and support continuous operation. Offshore wind remains an option under evaluation rather than a confirmed part of the current installation.
- Verify data-center performance: NTT Facilities is responsible for technical verification, which is intended to establish whether the floating arrangement can meet data-center engineering requirements.
- Use port infrastructure: The Yokohama location allows the partners to test deployment, maintenance and coordination from an operating port before considering locations farther offshore.
- Assess practical deployment: Results from the port demonstration are expected to inform the consortium’s broader concept for eventual practical application.
Who is building it?
| Organization | Declared role |
|---|---|
| Nippon Yusen (NYK Line) | Overall project responsibility and later port-based concept development |
| NTT Facilities | Data-center design and technical verification |
| Eurus Energy Holdings | Renewable-energy systems and technical work |
| MUFG Bank | Financial support |
| City of Yokohama | Municipal and port coordination |
NTT Facilities says its work contributes to approximately 70% of data centers constructed and operated in Japan, based on its cited project-count research. That figure describes the company’s stated involvement by project count; it does not specify the floating demonstrator’s capacity or performance.

The official releases do not provide several figures that would be needed to judge the facility as a commercial competitor to land-based data centers:

Consequently, “100% renewable energy” is a claim about the demonstration’s operating model, not evidence that every future floating data center will achieve the same result. Likewise, the planned move toward farther-offshore deployment remains prospective until the consortium publishes an operating installation and performance data.
How this differs from other floating-data-center ideas
Platform design and project stage matter when comparing proposals. The Yokohama project uses a purpose-built mini-float and is now in demonstration operation. A separate Japanese initiative involving Mitsui O.S.K. Lines and Kinetics targets a retrofitted vessel and has identified 2027 for a first deployment. Those are different engineering approaches: one starts with a compact floating platform, while the other adapts a ship. Useful comparisons should also examine power source, announced IT capacity, distance from shore, cooling method and whether the evidence is an MOU, a demonstration or a commercial facility.

What happens next?
The immediate task is to operate and verify the Yokohama unit. The consortium can then use evidence from the port setting to refine the platform, renewable-power system, battery controls, connectivity, maintenance procedures and regulatory arrangements. NYK’s September 2026 concept points toward deployment farther from shore, but no schedule, capacity or commercial customer has been announced for that stage.
