Does Jal Jeevan Mission apply to your home?
JJM supports household tap-water infrastructure in rural settlements. The central mission is implemented through state and local systems, so eligibility for a particular connection depends on the settlement’s plan and implementation status—not simply on whether you live in India or want a tap.

The 2020 operational guidance excludes isolated single houses and farmhouses far from villages or habitations from JJM funding. If your home is outside a village, ask the state or local water-supply authority which alternative scheme, if any, applies. Homes in municipal or other urban-authority areas should likewise check with the relevant local water department rather than assume JJM covers the address. See the 2020 JJM operational guidelines.
How JJM differs from a local water-supply scheme
JJM is the central mission; state and local authorities deliver water supply on the ground. A village may be served by a single-village scheme, a multi-village scheme, or a solar-powered stand-alone system. There is not one uniform network or connection process for every settlement. In a rural area, the Gram Panchayat and its village water committee, often called the Paani Samiti or an equivalent body, have a role in planning, operating, and maintaining village infrastructure. The Village Action Plan records implementation and maintenance arrangements. Ask these local bodies which scheme serves your village and whether your household is included; a nearby JJM project does not by itself establish that an individual connection is covered.
Check coverage and actual service—not just whether a tap exists
- Check the settlement’s status. Look up village-level information on the JJM dashboard, then confirm the record with the Gram Panchayat or the district or state water-supply office. A dashboard entry is a useful starting point, not confirmation that a particular household is connected or receiving water.
- Check household inclusion. Ask whether your home appears in the village plan or current scheme records, and whether the connection is already installed, planned, or still pending.
- Check service, not only infrastructure. A tap connection and a functioning water service are different. The 2020 JJM operational guideline defined functionality using quantity, prescribed quality, and regularity; it specified at least 55 litres per capita per day and referenced BIS:10500 for drinking-water quality. The official guidelines index lists newer JJM 2.0 guidance dated May 22, 2026. Because the detailed figures above come from the 2020 guidance, check the newer document for the current governing standards.
- Identify who operates the scheme. Ask the village committee or water-supply office which body is responsible for maintenance and where to report interruptions, leaks, or quality concerns.
No current national or locality-level household coverage figure is established here. Coverage changes over time, and older state percentages should not be treated as current. Use the dashboard and local office to check your settlement’s status.

Who to contact about a connection or water problem
- For a rural address, start with the Gram Panchayat or Paani Samiti. Ask whether the household is listed in the village plan, which scheme serves it, and how to request a connection or report a service issue.
- If the local issue is unresolved, escalate it. Contact the District Water and Sanitation Mission or State Water and Sanitation Mission through the current helpline or online grievance channel for your jurisdiction. The official Gram Panchayat and Paani Samiti guide identifies these grievance routes. Channels differ by state and district, so use the current local contact rather than relying on a number from another area.
- For a municipal or other non-JJM address, contact the local water-supply department. Ask the municipal body or state authority which scheme governs your address and what connection or complaint process applies.
When reporting a problem, give the office your village or ward, address, and the specific issue—such as a connection not yet provided, an interruption, a leak, or a water-quality concern. Ask for the responsible office and the applicable grievance channel if the first contact cannot resolve it.
