How Dallas lost 4–0 despite Oettinger’s 20 saves
The Blues scored twice with Oettinger in goal, then added two empty-netters in the final minutes. Joel Hofer made 25 saves for St. Louis and earned the shutout, according to the NHL recap.

When the Blues scored
First period: McTavish converts a rebound
Mason McTavish put St. Louis ahead 1:34 into the game. Colton Parayko’s shot was stopped, but the rebound stayed available for McTavish to finish.
Second period: a costly recovery sequence
Dalibor Dvorsky made it 2–0 at 13:05 of the second. The NHL recap says Oettinger left the puck for Nils Lundkvist, but Pius Suter beat Lundkvist to it and found Philip Broberg in front. As Oettinger tried to recover, he tripped over Roope Hintz, leaving Dvorsky an open net. Dallas’s official postgame account also described the collision as an unlucky mid-game mistake.

Third period: a goal overturned, then two empty-netters
Adam Jiricek appeared to score on a St. Louis power play, but Dallas successfully challenged the play for offside and the goal was overturned. Later, with Dallas pressing and its goalie pulled, Jimmy Snuggerud and Suter scored empty-net goals at 17:37 and 17:52, respectively.
Dallas’s offense did not give Oettinger support
“Gets no help” refers to the Stars’ failure to score, not to a flawless defensive performance. Dallas also had a clunky start, surrendered a second goal after the costly turnover-and-collision sequence, and could not capitalize on its power-play chances. The team’s postgame account characterized its power play as unproductive.

Forward Tyler Seguin described the game as one that “almost felt like preseason,” adding, “The game flow fell and penalties ruined the flow.” That was Seguin’s impression, quoted by the Stars’ official account, rather than a measured assessment of the game.
Hofer, meanwhile, credited St. Louis’s defensive work after the win: “We’re obviously very dynamic and can make very good plays, but we were up to the test tonight. We were very tight on them and didn’t give them much, so kudos to our guys,” he said in the NHL recap.

Oettinger’s availability entering the opener
RotoWire reported that Oettinger missed preseason because of a lower-body injury and had been cleared to play by Wednesday before the Oct. 2 opener. He started Friday’s game. RotoWire projected he would receive a starter’s workload in 2026–27, but that is an outlook rather than a confirmed schedule; Casey DeSmith was identified as the capable backup.
