A jailbroken PS5 running a local language model can fail at several unrelated points: the exploit or loader may not grant the rights an app needs, the model may exceed the process memory envelope, CPU polling may starve system services, Vulkan may lose the device, or the console may be overheating or failing to resume from rest mode. Start by identifying the stage that fails. Record the console and software configuration, confirm /data access and executable-memory rights, check the model’s memory demand, then tune threads, polling, context, backend and airflow one variable at a time. Do not change firmware or reboot repeatedly before preserving the log and the configuration that produced the symptom.
Identify the failure stage before changing anything
The same black screen, freeze or slow response can have very different causes. Use the first observable failure, not the final symptom, to choose a fix.

| Failure stage | Typical sign | First checks |
|---|---|---|
| Exploit, HEN or loader | The payload never starts, the title cannot reach its data directory, or an ELF launch fails. | Confirm the title ID is permitted by the HEN app-jailbreak allowlist, verify the loader path and port, and record HEN and payload versions. |
| Application launch | The AI program opens and immediately exits or shows a blank screen before loading a model. | Check executable-memory/JIT rights, app build compatibility and the application log. |
| Model allocation | The app starts but fails while reading weights, allocating a context or creating buffers. | Reduce model size or quantization, shorten context, close competing payloads and inspect the allocation error. |
| Generation | The model loads, but tokens arrive slowly, the UI stalls or the console shuts down during decoding. | Reduce worker threads, disable busy polling, compare CPU and Vulkan settings and watch temperature and fan behavior. |
| GPU or Vulkan | Generation stops, a device-loss error appears or a long submit hangs. | Capture the Vulkan log, keep the model and context fixed, then test a different backend or a smaller workload. |
| Rest-mode resume or Linux boot | The console freezes or displays a black screen after resume or during a Linux path. | Test without etaHEN/kstuff on that path, check display and HDCP state, and try a 1080p fallback. |
A HTTP 500 response is only a wrapper error in many local-AI servers. The useful exception is usually in the server or application log, so save that log before restarting.
Capture a reproducible baseline
Write down the complete state before making a change. A token-speed number without its configuration cannot tell you whether the model, backend or thermals are responsible.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Identify the hardware. Record the PS5 family and model identifier, such as a Slim or Pro, and whether the console is stock-cooled or has been physically modified.
- Record software versions. Note firmware, exploit host, HEN and payload versions, the AI application build, and any loader build. Compatibility can differ between firmware revisions.
- Describe the model. Save the model name, parameter size, quantization, file size, context length, prompt length and any requested GPU layers or buffers.
- Record execution settings. Note CPU, Vulkan or other backend, worker-thread count, polling or busy-wait setting, batch size if exposed, and whether another payload is active.
- Describe the symptom precisely. Distinguish an app exit, a complete console shutdown, a frozen home screen, a display-only black screen, a device-loss error and a gradual slowdown.
- Record thermal behavior. Write down whether the fan becomes louder, whether the console is in an enclosed space, and whether performance changes after several minutes.
- Capture logs. Preserve the application log, server log, loader output and any Vulkan error. Include timestamps so a shutdown or device loss can be correlated with the last operation.
- Make one controlled retry. Reproduce the failure with the same prompt and settings. Change only one variable on the next run, otherwise you will not know which adjustment helped.
Separate jailbreak and loader problems from AI problems
When /data is unreachable
If the application cannot read /data, do not evaluate model performance yet. PS5CEMU-HAR diagnostics distinguish a state where HEN reports no while /data is still reachable from a genuinely missing loader. Add the title ID to the HEN app-jailbreak allowlist when that is the documented requirement for your setup, or start an ELF loader on port 9021 when the application expects that route. The exact title ID and launch order must match your build.
Test access with a harmless file operation or the app’s own diagnostics before loading a multi-gigabyte model. A permission failure at this stage is not fixed by choosing a smaller model.
When the program runs only in an interpreter
An interpreter-only launch can look like a slow model, but it is a rights problem. Grant the JIT or executable-memory permission required by the application before judging token speed. If that permission cannot be granted, stop at the launch diagnosis; repeatedly changing quantization will not create executable memory.

For Linux boot or rest-mode paths, ps5-linux-loader documents etaHEN/kstuff incompatibility as a likely cause. Disable those components for that path and test a cold boot rather than resuming from rest mode. A black screen can also be a display-handshake issue: try the alternate display mode, change HDCP state, disconnect a monitor or capture device, and use a 1080p fallback. If the system becomes usable after a display change, treat it as an output-path problem rather than an AI allocation failure.

Check the memory envelope before blaming the model
Model weights are only one part of the allocation. The runtime also needs context storage, temporary tensors, command buffers, Vulkan resources and application overhead. A file that appears to fit on disk can fail when these allocations must coexist.
What the documented test console measured
PS5LM measured the following on a PS5 Slim CFI-2015 running firmware 13.60. These are measurements from that console and firmware, not universal limits for every PS5 model.
| Memory item | Measured value | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Flexible memory | 8.00 GiB | Total flexible pool observed by the test payload. |
| Approximate malloc ceiling | 6.25 GiB | Largest practical aggregate allocation reported by the project. |
| Largest single allocation | 6.00 GiB | One contiguous request; it does not leave room for the rest of the process. |
| Observed stability boundary | Holding about 6 GiB froze the home screen. | Using the largest apparent allocation can starve the system even when the request succeeds. |
| Payload planning recommendation | Roughly 4–5 GiB for model, context and buffers. | A practical target suggested by PS5LM for a payload, with remaining memory reserved for the console and runtime. |
The project notes that larger models need a native application with direct memory access. Do not copy the table’s ceilings to a PS5 Pro, another Slim revision or a different firmware without measuring that environment.
A safe load sequence
- Close unrelated payloads and applications so their allocations are released.
- Start with a model and quantization that leave a clear margin below the measured payload budget.
- Use a shorter context for the first load. Context memory grows independently of the weight file.
- Load the model without beginning generation. If allocation fails here, the problem is the memory envelope or a rights issue, not token scheduling.
- Inspect the log for the failed allocation, buffer size or out-of-memory message.
- If loading succeeds, generate with a short prompt, then increase context or model size gradually.
When a load fails, reduce only one of model size, quantization, context or auxiliary buffers at a time. A smaller quantization lowers memory use but can change quality and speed, so retain the original configuration in your baseline.

Stop CPU starvation from causing shutdowns
PS5LM measured 16 logical CPUs but only a subset available to the payload. In its testing, llama.cpp’s default busy polling across all five allowed CPUs starved system services and caused two shutdowns. The project’s safe patch reduces the worker-thread count and disables polling.
Apply conservative thread settings
- Count the CPUs actually granted to the payload rather than assuming all logical CPUs are available.
- Disable busy polling or polling mode first. Let workers sleep when they have no work.
- Set fewer worker threads than the allowed CPU count, leaving headroom for system services, the UI and the loader.
- Run the same prompt and context for several minutes while watching for UI lag, fan escalation or system instability.
- Increase the thread count one step at a time only if the console remains responsive and the log shows no starvation or shutdown.
More threads do not guarantee more tokens per second. A saturated console can spend time pre-empting system work, making both generation and the user interface slower. If a shutdown follows a thread increase, return to the last stable count rather than rebooting into a larger configuration.
Interpret token speed with like-for-like measurements
PS5LM reports about 30 tokens per second during decode for Qwen3.5 9B Q4_0 and 25–29 tokens per second for Mistral 7B Q4_0, using a 4,096-token context on its test setup. Those figures are configuration-specific reference points, not a promise for every jailbroken PS5.
Recommended Free Tools
| Reference run | Reported decode speed | Conditions that must match for comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Qwen3.5 9B Q4_0 | About 30 tok/s | Same model file and quantization, context, prompt, backend, thread and polling settings, application load and thermal state. |
| Mistral 7B Q4_0 | 25–29 tok/s | Same conditions as the reference run; the range itself shows that setup details affect the result. |
Measure decode separately from prompt processing if the interface exposes both. A long prompt can make the first response appear slow while steady-state decode is normal. Likewise, a short context can look fast until the context window grows and memory traffic increases.

What a lower result can and cannot tell you
- A lower speed with high CPU occupancy and a sluggish home screen points toward thread or polling contention.
- A lower speed that improves after a cooler, unobstructed run suggests thermal or power management effects, but do not infer a universal temperature threshold.
- A lower speed only on Vulkan, accompanied by device-loss messages, points toward the backend or driver path.
- A lower speed after increasing context may be normal memory and attention overhead rather than a broken exploit.
- A lower speed with interpreter-only execution indicates missing executable-memory rights.
Handle Vulkan and device-loss failures methodically
The PS5 Vulkan path described by PS5LM reports Vulkan 1.4 claims, 16-bit storage, timeline semaphores and subgroup operations, with a maximum storage buffer of 4 GiB. It also reports no cooperative matrix or accelerated integer dot-product support. These capabilities affect which kernels are efficient; they do not make every model or build equally stable.
PS5LM notes that a submit making no progress for 10 seconds ends in VK_ERROR_DEVICE_LOST. Treat that event as a backend or driver-stability failure, not as proof that the model file is corrupt.
Vulkan troubleshooting sequence
- Save the complete log containing the device-loss error and the operation immediately before it.
- Repeat with the same model, context and prompt on the CPU backend if available. A stable CPU run isolates Vulkan from model allocation and exploit rights.
- If CPU is stable, reduce Vulkan workload: use a smaller model or quantization, shorter context and fewer concurrent buffers.
- Keep the thread and polling settings conservative while testing Vulkan. Do not combine a backend change with an aggressive thread increase.
- Test one display and one output path if the failure coincides with a black screen or resume.
- Restore the last known-good backend when a device loss repeats, and preserve the failing log for the application or payload maintainer.
A Vulkan device loss can leave the graphics state unusable until the application or console is restarted. Restart only after saving the log; otherwise the evidence that distinguishes a hung submit from a permission or memory error may disappear.

Use Sony’s physical checks
- Leave at least 10 cm of free space around the console.
- Keep the side and rear vents unobstructed.
- Avoid long-fiber carpet and cramped shelves that trap warm air.
- Prevent dust from building up around the vents.
- Disconnect the AC cable from the rear before cleaning.
- Use a low-powered vacuum cleaner to remove dust from and around the air vents.
Use the low-powered handheld vacuum only with the console unplugged and as a dust-removal tool. Do not treat a cooling stand, a custom fan curve or liquid-metal replacement as universally required; no model-wide thermal-throttling temperature threshold is established here.
Distinguish heat from a software crash
Run the same workload in an open, ventilated position after cleaning. If speed falls only after sustained load and recovers when the console cools, thermal or power management is plausible. If the console shuts off instantly, loses power at the same point in every run or fails even while idle, do not keep increasing fan or thread settings. Save the logs and move to the power and repair checks.

Know when to stop software troubleshooting
Use Sony’s power troubleshooting and repair diagnostic when the console loses power shortly after startup, will not turn on, crashes or freezes while playing, or turns off during play. Persistent shutdowns after conservative memory settings, reduced CPU contention and verified airflow should be treated as a hardware or support case rather than as a reason to keep changing firmware.

Quick Recap
A safe end-to-end troubleshooting checklist
- Stop the workload and save the application, server and loader logs.
- Record the complete configuration and the first stage at which the failure occurs.
- Verify
/dataaccess, title-ID allowlisting and the expected ELF-loader route before changing the model. - Grant required JIT or executable-memory rights and confirm the app is not interpreter-only.
- Check model, context and buffer demand against a conservative memory budget; do not consume the largest apparent allocation.
- Disable busy polling and use fewer worker threads than the payload’s allowed CPU set.
- Run a short, repeatable prompt and compare decode speed only with matching model, context, backend and thermal conditions.
- For Vulkan errors, capture the device-loss log and isolate the backend with a controlled CPU comparison.
- For sustained fan noise or slowdown, provide 10 cm clearance, unobstructed vents and unplugged low-powered vacuum cleaning.
- For Linux or rest-mode freezes, test without etaHEN/kstuff and check display, HDCP and 1080p fallback options.
- If power loss or shutdowns persist, stop experimenting and use Sony’s repair diagnostic.
