Friends of Big Bear Valley released a tribute video for Jackie, the wild bald eagle whose life at a Big Bear Valley nest drew online viewers, ahead of a community memorial scheduled for October 3, 2026. Jackie died on August 10 at age 14 after weeks of intensive care. The video’s release was reported by Popular Science on October 2; the available reporting does not establish what footage, music, or narration it contains.
Why Jackie became a familiar eagle
Jackie was a wild female bald eagle associated with a nest in Big Bear Valley, California. Friends of Big Bear Valley installed its first nest camera in 2015, giving remote viewers an unusually close look at life around the nest. The Associated Press reports that Jackie began using it in 2017. Her story became a point of connection with wildlife for people following the camera, rather than a story about a captive or domesticated bird.

Friends of Big Bear Valley released the tribute video shortly before the planned memorial weekend. A separate announcement from Visit Big Bear described Jackie and her mate Shadow as having drawn “millions” of viewers; that is the announcement’s characterization, not a separately documented audience count.

The timeline published by For Jackie says a near-adult female began visiting an abandoned nest in fall 2016. Because Jackie was not banded, early identification is uncertain; that timeline associates the bird with Jackie but does not establish the identification as definitive. The AP’s account places her regular use of the nest in 2017.
