J.A. Bayona, who directed Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, is reportedly the frontrunner to direct the next Jurassic World film. He has not been officially hired: Universal has not announced a director, and the search is still described as ongoing.
Is J.A. Bayona directing the next Jurassic World movie?
Not officially. TheWrap reported on October 2, 2026, that Bayona is the frontrunner for the follow-up to Jurassic World: Rebirth. Dark Horizons separately described him as being “at the top of the list” of directors Universal wants. Neither report amounts to a studio confirmation or an announcement that Bayona has accepted the job.

Bayona is a familiar choice for the franchise because he directed 2018’s Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. That earlier film is the basis for the “familiar director” angle; the reports do not establish that he is already attached to the new project. TheWrap’s October 2 report and Dark Horizons’ coverage both frame his position as reported interest, not a confirmed hire.

TheWrap reported that Edwards departed the sequel over creative differences. Universal confirmed in a statement that he would not return, telling the outlet: “We had an incredible experience working with Gareth on ‘Jurassic World Rebirth’”. The studio statement did not itself give a reason for his departure; the creative-differences explanation is attributed to the report. TheWrap’s August 6, 2026 report carries Universal’s comment.

What is known about the sequel?
TheWrap reports that David Koepp has written a follow-up script and that Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali, and Jonathan Bailey are expected to return. These are reported details, not a substitute for a complete cast announcement from Universal. TheWrap’s October 2 report also puts the franchise’s recent commercial context in view: it says Jurassic World: Rebirth grossed $869 million worldwide in 2025.

Neither detail is confirmed by the reports. Dark Horizons has repeated earlier reports suggesting the title Jurassic World: Liberation and a possible June 2028 release, but it does not present either as an official Universal announcement. Until the studio confirms a title and date, both should be treated as unconfirmed possibilities.
