The fourth-generation Apple TV 4K is a substantial hardware refresh, but I still would not replace a working 2022 model with it. The $299 US price, required accessories for its most ambitious home-theater feature, and planned Siri AI support for older boxes make this an upgrade for specific users rather than a default purchase.
What Apple announced
Apple announced the fourth-generation Apple TV 4K on October 13, 2026. Pre-orders opened the same day, and store availability is scheduled for November 13, 2026. In the United States, the product costs $299 and is offered in one 128GB configuration.

The central hardware change is Apple’s A19 chip. Apple claims up to 50 percent faster CPU performance and up to twice the graphics performance of the previous generation’s A15-based model. The A19 also includes a dedicated AV1 decoder, which Apple says can deliver high-quality streaming while using less bandwidth. Those are Apple’s figures; independent laboratory benchmarks were not available when the product was announced.
The enclosure keeps the familiar basic shape. MacRumors’ reporting noted no obvious external redesign beyond a centered status light, so the visible change is modest for an owner who already has an Apple TV 4K.
#1 Best Overall

- Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 surround sound
- A10X Fusion chip for ultra-fast graphics and performance
- Voice search by asking the Siri Remote
Why the $299 upgrade is difficult to justify
Siri AI is not exclusive to the new box
The feature most likely to attract attention is Siri AI. Apple describes conversational discovery, follow-up questions and requests that use personal context when the Apple TV is paired with an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone. At launch, Apple lists English availability in the United States, Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa and the United Kingdom.
However, Apple and MacRumors state that Siri AI is also coming in beta to Apple TV 4K models from the second generation onward. That includes the 2021 and 2022 generations. If Siri is your main reason to upgrade, a compatible existing box can provide the capability without a $299 purchase, subject to beta availability and the requirement for an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone for personal-context features.
The price is high for a streaming box
The fourth-generation model costs $299 in the US and removes the cheaper tier. That is a substantial commitment for a device whose basic job—running streaming apps, AirPlay and Apple services—can already be handled by an existing Apple TV 4K. Buyers should also account for the possibility that discounted 2022 stock delivers the familiar Apple TV experience for considerably less, although discounts and remaining inventory vary by retailer.

The headline audio feature requires four HomePods
The new Apple TV can coordinate four HomePod speakers as front and rear pairs for surround sound. Apple specifies matching pairs, with a system built from four HomePod mini 2 units or compatible combinations involving second-generation HomePod models.
That requirement makes the feature an ecosystem investment rather than a software toggle. TechRadar’s example hardware totals range from approximately $895 to $1,695, before room layout, stands and any equipment you already own. Those are illustrative system totals, not a universal Apple list price for every combination. If you do not already have four compatible HomePods, the surround-sound feature can cost several times the streaming box itself.
What you gain with the fourth generation
| Area | Fourth-generation Apple TV 4K | 2022 third-generation Apple TV 4K | What it means for an owner |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price and storage | $299 US; 128GB configuration | Not stated in Apple’s launch announcement | The new model has a single, high entry price. |
| Processor | A19; Apple claims up to 50% faster CPU performance | A15 | Potentially useful for demanding games and heavier processing, but the claim is not an independent benchmark. |
| Graphics | Apple claims up to 2× the previous generation’s graphics performance | Previous-generation graphics hardware | Most valuable to gamers and buyers planning to keep the box for years. |
| Video decoding | Dedicated AV1 decoder | Not stated | May improve efficiency for services that deliver AV1 streams; actual benefits depend on app and service support. |
| Siri AI | Supported, with listed launch languages and regions | Planned in beta for second-generation and later Apple TV 4K models | Siri alone does not require replacement of a compatible older box. |
| Microphones | Three far-field microphones for hands-free Siri | No built-in far-field microphone feature stated | A meaningful convenience upgrade if you want to speak to the TV from across the room. |
| Remote | Siri Remote with Find My, Precision Finding and a sound-playing function | Earlier remote generation | Useful when remotes disappear; the new remote is backward compatible with Apple TV HD and earlier Apple TV 4K models. |
| Home theater audio | Four compatible HomePods in front and rear pairs | Does not provide this announced four-speaker configuration | Only compelling if you already own, or deliberately plan to buy, the required speakers. |
The upgrades that could justify buying it
You want hands-free control
Three far-field microphones built into the box let you invoke Siri without holding the remote. This is the clearest day-to-day difference for people who regularly search from a sofa, ask follow-up questions or want conversational discovery without reaching for another device.

You play games or want more performance headroom
The A19 is the strongest reason to buy for performance-sensitive users. Apple’s stated ceiling is up to 50 percent faster CPU performance and up to twice the graphics performance versus the previous A15 generation. Treat those numbers as vendor claims until independent testing is available.

A dedicated AV1 decoder could reduce bandwidth use for compatible streams. It is a forward-looking advantage, not a guarantee that every streaming app will immediately use AV1 or that every household will see a visible improvement.
You frequently lose the remote
The updated Siri Remote adds Find My support with Precision Finding and a sound-playing function. Because TechRadar reports backward compatibility with Apple TV HD and previous Apple TV 4K models, some owners can buy the remote as a targeted upgrade instead of replacing the box.

You are building a four-HomePod theater
If you already own the required compatible speakers and want front-and-rear HomePod pairs, the new Apple TV is the necessary center of that announced configuration. For everyone else, the additional speaker cost changes the calculation dramatically.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you upgrade from the 2022 Apple TV 4K?
- Keep your current box if it runs your apps reliably and Siri AI is your only motivation. Apple plans beta support for Apple TV 4K (2nd generation or later).
- Consider the new model if hands-free microphones, A19 performance, AV1 decoding or a Find My-enabled remote solves a problem you actually have.
- Confirm your ecosystem before paying $299: personal-context Siri AI requires an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone, and four-speaker surround requires four compatible HomePods.
- Compare total cost with discounted third-generation inventory and with the price of a standalone remote if finding the remote is your only complaint.
- Wait for testing if your decision depends on speed or graphics. Apple’s performance figures are claims, and long-term reliability and independent benchmarks were not yet available before the November 13 store launch.
Bottom line for a long-time owner
The fourth-generation Apple TV 4K is official, faster on paper and more capable as a hands-free home-theater hub. It is not an automatic upgrade. A working second- or third-generation box is slated to receive Siri AI in beta, while the most dramatic audio feature requires four additional speakers. Unless you specifically want the microphones, A19 performance, AV1 decoding, remote finding or an existing four-HomePod setup, keeping your current Apple TV—or buying a discounted previous-generation unit—makes the stronger value case at $299.
