Most Windows 11 users do not need to buy antivirus. Windows Security already combines Microsoft Defender Antivirus, SmartScreen, firewall protection and ransomware defenses, and independent testing continues to treat it as a mainstream consumer product. Paying becomes sensible when you need protection and administration across several operating systems, or want extras such as identity monitoring, parental controls, a VPN or vendor support.
What Windows 11 gives you for free
Windows 11 includes Microsoft Defender Antivirus, Windows Defender Firewall, SmartScreen and additional security controls in the built-in Windows Security app. Real-time protection continuously checks activity, while Windows Update delivers new security intelligence. Tamper protection helps prevent malicious changes to Defender settings, and Controlled folder access is designed to protect important files from ransomware.

SmartScreen checks the reputation of websites, downloaded applications and potentially dangerous files. Microsoft documents a limitation: reputation checks do not provide the same coverage for malicious files stored on internal locations or network shares. That is one reason safe handling of files and sensible network practices still matter.

What independent tests actually show
Independent laboratories are useful for comparing protection, false positives, performance and usability, but their results are snapshots rather than permanent guarantees.
- AV-Comparatives has tested Microsoft Defender in its consumer main series since 2007. Its current explanation says Windows 11 protection requires no subscription or installation and that “for many users, this level of protection is plenty.”
- AV-TEST evaluated 15 home-user security products in its November–December 2025 Windows 11 cycle. It measured protection against zero-day malware, performance and usability; products scoring at least 17.5 points receive its “TOP PRODUCT” designation.
- AV-Comparatives’ 2025 Consumer Summary Report included both free and paid products in its Main-Test Series, including Microsoft Defender Antivirus, Bitdefender Total Security and ESET HOME Security Essential.
A paid subscription is therefore not automatically safer. Editions, settings, test samples and threat conditions change. Compare the dimensions that affect your situation rather than treating one laboratory result as a lifetime verdict.

One well-maintained Windows 11 PC
You can reasonably rely on Defender if you use one supported Windows 11 computer, keep updates current, leave Windows Security defaults enabled and do not need cross-device features. This is a practical recommendation, not a promise that infections are impossible.
The habits that make the free option work
- Install Windows and application updates promptly.
- Keep real-time protection, SmartScreen and tamper protection enabled.
- Download software from sources you trust and treat unexpected installers, links and attachments as risky.
- Maintain backups, including at least one backup that ransomware cannot rewrite.
- Review Windows Security alerts instead of dismissing them automatically.
Who should pay for antivirus
Several operating systems or many devices
Paid coverage is more attractive when one account must protect Windows PCs alongside Macs, iPhones or Android devices. Microsoft distinguishes the built-in Windows component from its separate Defender app, included with Microsoft 365 Personal or Family, which works across Windows, Mac, iOS and Android. Check the current plan’s device limits and features before buying.

Family administration
Parents or household administrators may value centralized controls, parental controls and easier management of several users. Microsoft specifically cites shared family devices and parental controls as reasons some people may consider additional security software.
Identity monitoring, VPN and support
Identity monitoring, a VPN, breach alerts, password-related tools and access to vendor support can justify a subscription even when the underlying malware protection is comparable to Defender. These are convenience and risk-management benefits, not proof that the paid scanner will block every threat Defender misses.

Work or high-consequence use
If a compromised laptop could interrupt a business, expose sensitive records or create costly recovery work, centralized policy controls and support may be worth paying for. Choose based on the controls your organization actually needs, rather than simply selecting the most expensive package.
