Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →In my experience, leaving the Brick across the room made it less automatic to reopen the apps I’d blocked. That is the appeal: this phone blocker turns a swipe to regain access into a small trip to a physical device. I wouldn’t call it essential for every home, or say it rewires everyone’s brain. It’s a deliberate bit of friction—and whether it helps depends on whether you’re willing to leave the Brick out of reach.
What the Brick phone blocker does
Brick pairs a physical device with a companion app. In the app, you choose which apps to block and set up modes; you then tap your phone to the Brick to activate a session. To restore access, you tap the phone to the device again. The manufacturer’s rationale is that keeping this physical “key” somewhere inconvenient makes bypassing a block more deliberate. That is the design idea, not independent proof that Brick changes behavior for everyone. See how Brick describes its setup.

That extra step is the point. An app-only blocker may leave its controls on the same phone you’re trying to put down. Brick asks you to decide where the device lives and whether you’ll get up to reach it. The tactic works only if you don’t keep the Brick beside your phone.
Why making distraction inconvenient helped me
My reason for liking the Brick is mundane: laziness can work in your favor. If the device is across the room, reopening a blocked app is no longer a reflex completed in the same motion. The interruption gives me a moment to decide whether I actually need the app.
#1 Best Overall

- Effortless Control: Brick is subscription-free and includes lifetime access to the Brick app at no additional cost. No complex setups, just more time for what matters.
- How to Use: Open the Brick app and choose which apps or websites you want to block. Tap your phone to the Brick to activate it and turn your phone back into a tool that supports your goals. When you're ready to reconnect, simply tap again to regain access.
- Custom Modes: Create custom modes for different parts of your day — each with its own set of blocked apps. Boost productivity in Work mode, study without distractions in School mode, and be present at home in Family Time mode.
- Track Usage: Make digital health a daily habit. As soon as your phone is Bricked, a timer starts tracking how long you are staying focused for. You can monitor your Brick activity such as hours spent Bricked or daily average Bricked time in the app.
A recent Tom’s Guide reviewer described a similar personal benefit, saying the routine helped them notice and reduce their own social-media checking. That is one reviewer’s experience, not evidence that Brick reliably reduces screen time or changes habits for every user. There is no independent effectiveness study or expert assessment established in the available sources. The publication’s headline, “This is the kind of gadget every household needs,” is an opinion, not a general finding. Read the Tom’s Guide review.
What it can block—and what varies by platform
The US Apple App Store listing describes blocking for apps and Safari websites, custom modes for different parts of the day, a focus timer, strict mode, five emergency unbricks, and usage history. It also says Apple policy prevents blocking the dialer. These are claims on the US iOS listing; feature availability can differ by platform or app version, so check the listing for your phone before relying on a particular control. Brick says one phone can work with multiple Bricks, which may suit someone who wants a device at home and another at work. Whether that convenience matters depends on your routine: the physical device has to be somewhere you can leave it alone but can retrieve when you intentionally want access.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWho may find Brick worthwhile
- You want a physical pause: The tap-to-unblock routine may suit you if an extra action is more useful than another reminder on your phone.
- You can put the device out of reach: If it stays next to your phone, the intended friction largely disappears.
- You’re comfortable with a new routine: You’ll need to configure modes and remember to activate them by tapping the phone to the Brick.
- You want software controls instead: An app-only blocker avoids another object, though its controls may remain accessible on the same phone. The sources here do not establish a specific competitor as a like-for-like alternative.
- You’re considering a DIY NFC tag: The review mentions NFC tags used with other apps, but that does not establish feature parity or compatibility with Brick.
Price, setup and the physical device
Tom’s Guide reported a US price of $59 and a UK price of £44 in its review published October 2, 2026. Those are dated figures, not a guarantee of current price or availability; check the manufacturer’s current offer before buying. The same reviewer described the device as magnetic, with a silicone base, and reported an optional mount at $15 / £14. They found the mount unnecessary for their setup, but placement needs vary. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. My verdict: useful friction, not a household essential
The Brick makes sense to me as a physical barrier for someone who wants distractions to take more effort to reopen. Its promise is practical rather than magical: put the device somewhere inconvenient, and decide whether the interruption is worth crossing the room for. If you want a guaranteed fix, or know you’ll keep the Brick within arm’s reach, the product’s central idea may not do much for you.
