I still use Waze in Android Auto because it makes navigation useful to me in four specific ways: community road reports, route changes when conditions shift, voice destination entry, and access through my car’s display. That is a deliberate exception to my effort to rely less on Google—not a claim that Waze is independent of Google or that it is always the best route planner.
Why I kept Waze in the car
De-Googling is not an all-or-nothing switch. I have reduced my reliance on Google services, but I have kept Waze for driving because the features I use are practical in the moment I need them. These are personal reasons for keeping it, not results from a controlled comparison with another navigation app.

1. Community reports add context to the route
Waze describes its maps and navigation as community-powered: drivers’ activity and reports help inform the service. On Android Auto, the available in-car reports include traffic, police, crashes, hazards, bad weather, blocked lanes, and map issues. That can make the map feel more informative than a line showing only where to turn. Waze lists these as supported features; how useful they are depends on reports and coverage where you drive. Waze’s Android Auto help page describes the report categories, while its About Waze page explains the community-powered model.
2. It can change the route as conditions change
Waze’s Google Play listing describes automatic rerouting using live traffic, incidents, and closures. I value having route changes available while a trip is underway, especially when a delay develops. That is a feature claim, not a guarantee that Waze will identify the fastest route every time; traffic conditions, incoming reports, and local coverage all matter. Some features may also be unavailable in certain countries, according to the Waze Google Play listing, updated September 23, 2026.

Tested for vibration resistance to support stable performance on bumpy roads.
3. I can enter a destination by voice
Waze supports voice destination entry through Android Auto, so I can ask for a destination instead of typing it on the phone. Saved places added in the phone app can also be selected from the car display. The exact interaction depends on the car and Android Auto setup. Waze says typing on the car display may require the vehicle to be in Park with the handbrake up; I do not treat the screen as something to operate while driving. Its Android Auto setup instructions cover voice commands and destination selection.
4. Navigation is available on the car display
I prefer seeing navigation through the car’s Android Auto display rather than relying only on the phone screen. Waze supports Android Auto in compatible vehicles, and some cars may also show navigation on the instrument cluster. Compatibility varies by vehicle. Waze says to connect the phone by USB or wirelessly, then open Waze on the car display; wireless availability depends on the phone and car. Google introduced Waze for Android Auto in 2017, with Android Auto product manager Daniel Holle describing the goal as helping users avoid traffic while providing “the best possible driving experience.” That was a launch-era product goal, not proof of a guaranteed outcome. Waze’s current help page covers setup and compatibility; the historical statement appears in Google’s July 26, 2017 announcement.

The tradeoff: Waze is still part of Google
Keeping Waze is not a complete exit from Google. Waze’s privacy policy identifies it as Google-owned and describes collecting detailed location, travel, and route information, including information from GPS and device sensors. The policy also says Waze may share de-identified account settings and location- or route-related data with Google mapping and navigation products to develop or improve maps, speeds, closure information, navigation functions, and road alerts. That policy language does not establish that every trip is shared in identifiable form; it does establish a data relationship I should account for when deciding whether the convenience is worth it. Read the Waze Privacy Policy for the details and applicable terms.

Privacy settings to check before using Waze in the car
Waze says privacy controls are changed on the phone and apply in the car. If Waze is connected to Android Auto, disconnect the phone before adjusting them. The controls do not turn Waze into a non-Google service, but they let users manage some aspects of the experience. Waze’s privacy-controls help page lists the available options.
Rank #3
- Keep Your Phone in Your Pocket: Turn factory wired CarPlay or Android Auto into a wireless setup and keep using your car’s original screen. This 2-in-1 wireless adapter is ideal for households with both iPhone and Android phones sharing a vehicle. Connects to one phone at a time; disconnect the current phone before connecting another.
- Plug and Play for Everyday Drives: Just plug the adapter into your car’s USB data port and pair your phone via Bluetooth. After the initial setup, it reconnects automatically on later drives, so you can skip the usual plug-and-unplug routine—whether it’s your morning commute or a quick errand. Keep Bluetooth and Wi-Fi enabled.
- Less Clutter Around the Console: A compact wireless adapter that helps reduce phone cable clutter running across your console every time you drive. The mini dongle takes up little space and includes two extension cables for USB-A and USB-C data ports, making the adapter easier to position around recessed or hard-to-reach ports.
- Your Usual Apps, Now Wireless: Follow your route, put on a playlist, take a call, or use voice commands through CarPlay or Android Auto. Bluetooth 5.4 handles pairing, while Wi-Fi 6 carries the wireless connection. Works with your car’s supported steering wheel, knob, and touchscreen controls, with fewer phone cables to manage.
- Check the Fit Before You Buy: Your car needs factory wired CarPlay for a compatible iPhone (iOS 10 or later), or factory wired Android Auto for a compatible Android phone running Android 11 or later. Connect your phone with a USB data cable first to check that the matching system works. Not for BMW, Tesla, or aftermarket head units. Video playback, screen mirroring are not supported.
- Ad personalization: Turn it off if you do not want ads personalized. Waze says ads may still appear.
- Visibility: Use the option to go invisible if you do not want to appear on the map to other Waze users.
- Navigation history: Delete it through the app’s privacy controls.
- Recent locations: Remove individual recent locations as needed.
Waze also says some contributions, including map edits and statistical drive data, remain after account deletion but are no longer linked to the user. Account deletion therefore should not be read as erasing every contribution from the service; see the privacy-controls page for its explanation.
What to expect from Waze in Android Auto
Connection and feature availability depend on the phone, car, country, and Android Auto support. Waze requires a mobile data connection for route finding and navigation. If service is intermittent, alerts may be unreliable and reports may not go through, so it is unwise to treat the app as a dependable offline navigation system. Waze explains the connection requirement on its About Waze page.
For setup, connect by USB or wirelessly if both the phone and vehicle support that method, open Waze on the car screen, then choose a destination by voice or through the display when it is safe and permitted. Waze’s Android Auto help page also cautions drivers to pay attention to the road and follow applicable laws. Use reports and menus only when it is safe to do so, or ask a passenger.
