After a month with an AI agent, my verdict is split: it can remove hours of routine work, but its ability to plan and act across tools makes a mistake harder to spot and more expensive to undo than a bad chatbot answer.
That tension is not just personal nerves. Research finds measurable productivity gains, growing delegation as users become familiar with agents, weak error recovery, automation complacency and new social and emotional risks. The useful question is not whether agents are “good” or “bad,” but which actions they may take without me and which still require a human decision.

What changed when the tool could act
A chat-only system answers a prompt. An agentic system can pursue a goal through several steps. A UK government consumer report describes agentic AI as systems that “sense, decide and act.” Depending on its setup, an agent may break a goal into subtasks, make a plan, retrieve current information, remember earlier interactions and perform actions such as updating records or initiating a payment.
That distinction explains my mixed reaction. If an agent produces a weak paragraph, I can rewrite it. If it chooses the wrong file, sends an incorrect message or changes a live system, the failure leaves the chat window and enters the world. More capability is also more surface area for mistakes.

Week one: the novelty was genuinely useful
I started with bounded work: turning notes into a draft, searching across documents, summarizing long material and proposing code changes for review. The agent was fastest when the objective was clear, the inputs were available and the result was easy to inspect. It saved me from repetitive copying and from keeping a dozen small steps in my head.
That pattern matches a large Stanford University and National Bureau of Economic Research study from 2024. Generative-AI assistance increased customer-support issues resolved per hour by 15% on average. The gain was larger for less experienced and lower-skilled workers. The most experienced and highest-skilled workers saw small speed gains and small quality declines, a reminder that “AI makes everyone faster” is too broad a claim.
The practical lesson from my first week was simple: an agent is excellent at preparing work for a person who still owns the decision. Drafting, retrieval, summarization and routine transformations are safer starting points than open-ended authority.

Once the basic workflow worked, I gave the agent more context and allowed it to carry a plan across multiple steps. That was the moment it stopped feeling like autocomplete. It could gather information, make intermediate choices and return with a partially completed result instead of waiting for a new prompt after every action.

Anthropic’s 2026 analysis of Claude Code sessions shows the same behavioral curve. The longest sessions grew from under 25 minutes to more than 45 minutes. Full auto-approval appeared in roughly 20% of sessions for new users and more than 40% for experienced users. Familiarity did not merely improve comfort; it increased how much autonomy people were willing to grant.
Software engineering accounted for nearly 50% of observed public-API agent activity in that analysis. Most actions were low-risk and reversible, although use in healthcare, finance and cybersecurity was emerging. That distribution matters: a coding assistant editing a branch is a different risk from an agent changing production infrastructure or handling a financial transaction.
Why trust grows even when scrutiny should not
Repeatedly seeing an agent complete ordinary tasks creates a powerful shortcut: “It has been right so far.” The shortcut is understandable, but it is not a reliability guarantee. The agent may be competent on familiar subtasks while remaining brittle when the situation changes.

Microsoft Research describes this as an evaluator burden. Work shifts from producing an answer to inspecting AI output, handling interruptions and repairing workflow disruptions. Automation can make easy tasks easier while making hard tasks harder, because the human receives a larger, more complicated review job when the agent goes off course.
Week three: the break was a recovery failure
The unsettling incident was not a science-fiction takeover. It was a normal-looking task that went wrong because the agent made an incorrect assumption and continued. Its output was coherent enough to invite a quick approval, but the underlying choice was wrong. When challenged, it did not reliably identify the first bad step or produce a dependable recovery plan; I had to reconstruct the path and undo the changes.
That is the failure mode I now fear most: not an obviously absurd answer, but a confident chain of reasonable-looking actions. The Bank for International Settlements found agents impressive on narrow tasks but weak at recognizing when they were wrong, experimenting effectively to fix errors and recovering from mistakes. Humans also make errors, yet in the tested settings people recovered better.

A month is not a controlled experiment, and one failure does not describe every agent. It did show why an audit trail, checkpoints and an easy undo path are more important than a friendly interface.

What I still delegate—and what requires approval
I now choose permissions by consequence, not by convenience. The following boundary is more useful than a blanket “use AI” or “never use AI” rule:
| Task or action | Default setting | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Drafting, summarizing and extracting information | Delegate, then review | Errors are usually visible and reversible before publication. |
| Searching and assembling a research brief | Delegate with source checks | The agent can save time, but current facts and omissions still need verification. |
| Code changes in an isolated branch | Delegate with tests and diff review | Isolation and a reviewable change set limit blast radius. |
| Sending messages, publishing, deleting or changing live data | Require approval every time | The action affects other people or creates an external record. |
| Payments, access control, medical or legal decisions | Do not allow unsupervised execution | The consequence is high and a plausible explanation is not adequate evidence. |
Before enabling a new tool, I check eight things:
- What goal and subgoals can it pursue without asking?
- Which files, accounts, APIs or funds can it access?
- Can every action be previewed, logged and reversed?
- Where are the approval prompts, and can they be bypassed?
- What happens when a tool times out or returns incomplete data?
- Can I stop the run immediately?
- How long is data retained, and who can inspect it?
- How much human checking time does the workflow actually require?
The emotional boundary is real too
An agent that remembers context and responds patiently can feel more dependable than a collection of ordinary software tools. That can be useful for reducing friction, but it can also blur what the system is. OpenAI and the MIT Media Lab state that ChatGPT is not designed to replace or mimic human relationships. Their findings associated stronger attachment and viewing the AI as a friend with more negative effects, while explicitly warning that the results are correlations, not proof of causation.
My safeguard is to treat warmth as an interface feature, not evidence of understanding, loyalty or accountability. I can ask an agent to help structure a difficult conversation; I do not treat it as a friend, therapist or substitute for a person who shares responsibility for the outcome.
The professional cost of using AI
Even when the work improves, the user may pay a reputational price. A PNAS study of more than 4,400 participants found that people who use AI can be judged as less competent and less motivated. That does not show that using an agent lowers performance; it shows that colleagues, clients or employers may interpret visible AI use negatively.
Best Value
The safest response is transparent accountability: keep the human reviewer identifiable, preserve the source material and change history, and be able to explain the decision without saying that “the AI did it.” In regulated or high-stakes work, documentation is part of the deliverable.
Will an agent replace my job?
In the near term, agents are more likely to rearrange jobs than erase every role. They can absorb repeatable steps, widen the amount of work one person can handle and raise the value of setting goals, checking evidence, handling exceptions and taking responsibility. The Stanford/NBER result also shows why averages mislead: benefits varied by skill level, and some highly experienced workers saw quality declines alongside modest speed gains.
The larger employment risk is a transition in which organizations add autonomy before they build oversight. The World Economic Forum reported in 2025 that 82% of executives planned to adopt agents within one to three years, while identifying gaps in autonomy, safety, system integration and trust governance. Adoption plans are not proof that replacement will occur, but they make governance a workplace issue rather than a distant technical debate.
My rule after a month
“Impressed” describes the capability curve: an agent can plan, use tools and remove substantial routine work. “Terrified” describes the control and accountability gap: it may not know when it is wrong, may recover poorly and may encourage me to approve more than I would have approved on day one.
I will keep delegating bounded, reviewable tasks. I will require explicit approval for actions that publish, spend, delete, grant access or affect another person. I will keep logs, test changes in reversible environments and reserve final judgment for a human who can explain and own the result. That is not a rejection of agents. It is the condition under which their usefulness remains worth the risk.
