Parents weighing limits on children’s social media and AI use have several practical options: agree on expectations as a family, use built-in parental controls, and set household routines such as keeping phones out of bedrooms overnight. But the six parents’ individual accounts behind the quoted headline are not available here, so their specific rules and experiences cannot be reported without inventing them.
Why families are revisiting digital rules
Social media limits are familiar to many households; generative AI adds a less visible part of a child’s online life. A child may use AI tools or chat with AI characters without a parent realizing how often it happens. In a July 2026 release, the Family Online Safety Institute (FOSI) reported that a survey of more than 4,000 parents and children ages 10–17 in the United States and Australia found a gap between parents’ perceptions and children’s reports of online activity, widest for generative AI. Ipsos fielded the survey in spring 2026. These are survey responses, not an independent measure of how much children use particular services or proof that a given rule changes behavior. The concern is not only how much time a child spends on a device. Families may also want to know what services are being used, whether a child can reach age-inappropriate material, and whether online activity is affecting sleep, schoolwork, or time together. Those questions call for rules that fit the child and the household, rather than a single universal screen-time number.
Start with a family plan, then choose controls
The U.S. Federal Trade Commission recommends discussing rules and expectations as a family before considering parental controls. A useful plan makes clear what is allowed, when devices can be used, and what to do when a child encounters something upsetting or confusing. Include social apps and AI tools explicitly; a rule about “screen time” alone may not cover the services parents are concerned about.

Once expectations are agreed, families can consider the free tools the FTC identifies: Apple Family Sharing, Google Family Link, and Microsoft Family Safety. Depending on the device and service, built-in controls can help set limits or restrictions and provide activity information. They do not necessarily cover every app or service, and they work best as support for an understood family rule rather than a substitute for conversation. Check the settings and coverage for the specific devices and accounts in your home. FTC guidance on making a family screen-time plan
Match the boundary to the problem
Different approaches address different concerns. Before choosing one, consider the child’s age and device, how easy the rule is to bypass, whether the child understands what is monitored, and how they can reach family in an emergency. There is no tested ranking that establishes one approach as best for every household.
Set expectations together
A family agreement can spell out which platforms or AI tools are permitted, when they may be used, and what the child should do if an interaction feels unsafe. A discussion also gives parents a chance to explain the reason for a limit and hear what the child finds difficult about it.

Use device and account settings
Parental controls can support agreed limits and restrictions. FOSI’s 2026 survey release says 81% to 86% of parents and children reported that parental controls worked, depending on the control. That range reflects respondents’ views in the survey, not a controlled trial or a guarantee that a setting will work equally well on every device, app, or child’s account.
Create an overnight charging routine
Some families remove phones overnight to protect sleep or make late-night use less likely. Associated Press background reporting describes this as a family strategy; it does not establish that the approach works for every household. A designated charging place outside the bedroom can make the routine easier to follow. A lockbox is one optional way to implement storage, not a product evaluated or recommended by the reporting. UK proposals and pilots are not universal rules
In March 2026, the UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology announced pilots involving 300 teenage households to examine social-media restrictions, time limits, and curfews, including possible effects on sleep, family life, and schoolwork. An announced pilot is not evidence that a particular restriction works for all families. UK pilot announcement, March 25, 2026

A July 2026 UK government response described proposed further protections for 16- and 17-year-olds, action on AI chatbots, and planned screen-use guidance for children ages 5–16. These are UK policy developments; proposals and planned guidance should not be mistaken for measures already in force, and they do not automatically apply outside the UK. Meta’s announcement describes protections for teen accounts and parental supervision options related to AI, including managing access to one-to-one chats with AI characters. This is Meta’s description of its own tools, not an independent assessment. Availability and settings can change, so parents should check the current controls for the relevant account and location. These Meta controls do not establish what is available on other platforms or AI services. Meta’s announcement on parental supervision and AI safety, updated April 16, 2026
A practical way to review the rules
- Name the concern. Decide whether the priority is bedtime, time spent, a particular social platform, AI interactions, or something else.
- Agree on a clear expectation. Specify what is allowed and when, including how the rule applies to AI tools as well as social media.
- Choose a matching support. Consider built-in device or account controls for limits and restrictions, or a household charging routine if overnight access is the concern.
- Discuss visibility and exceptions. Tell the child what activity information a control may show and how they can contact family when a device is restricted or stored away.
- Revisit the plan. A new device, service, school schedule, or change in the child’s needs can make an old rule unsuitable.
None of these approaches guarantees that a child will avoid every risk or that a rule will never be bypassed. The most useful plan is one the family understands, can apply consistently, and can adjust as a child’s digital life changes.
