Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTake every suspected Ivanti Connect Secure (ICS) or Policy Secure appliance out of production immediately. Disconnect it from agency or enterprise networks, isolate it from internal resources as far as practical, and begin hunting on systems that were connected to it. Before a factory reset or rebuild, preserve a forensic image and export logs and artifacts when incident-response procedures allow. Then follow the vendor-directed reset or replacement path, rebuild on a supported and patched release, rotate every credential and trust object that could have been exposed, and restore service only after validation and heightened monitoring.
This sequence follows CISA Supplemental Direction V1 (issued January 31, 2024 and updated February 5, 2024), the joint CISA advisory on the Ivanti exploit chain, Singapore’s Cyber Security Agency guidance, and Ivanti’s recovery guidance. The principal vulnerabilities discussed by CISA are CVE-2023-46805, CVE-2024-21887, and CVE-2024-21893. Confirm the current Ivanti security advisory, supported-release list, and notification requirements for your jurisdiction before executing a live response.

Why an Ivanti compromise requires a rebuild-and-rotate response
The affected appliances can sit at the boundary between the internet, remote users, identity systems, and internal applications. CISA’s advisory describes an attack chain in which an attacker can bypass authentication, execute commands with elevated privileges, and establish persistence. A patch or a clean result from an integrity checker therefore does not prove that the appliance is trustworthy again.

Treat a checker result as one input to an investigation, not as clearance to return the appliance to production. The safe objective is to preserve evidence, remove the potentially altered system, rebuild from a known-good state, and invalidate secrets that the appliance or its connected accounts could have exposed.

First hour: contain the appliance and the surrounding environment
Disconnect and isolate
CISA’s required action for affected government systems is to “disconnect all instances of Ivanti Connect Secure and Ivanti Policy Secure solution products from agency networks.” For any organization, apply the same principle: remove the appliance from production paths and disconnect its network interfaces. Isolate it from enterprise resources to the greatest degree possible, including authentication servers, management networks, file services, and administrative jump hosts. Preserve the device in its contained state rather than continuing to use it for remote access.
Coordinate the change with network and identity teams so that emergency blocks do not accidentally leave a second, unmonitored path into the environment. Record the time of isolation, interfaces disconnected, firewall changes, administrators involved, and any sessions that were active. Those details help investigators establish a timeline and explain gaps in logs.
Keep hunting beyond the appliance
Isolation stops new traffic through the suspected gateway; it does not undo actions already taken. Continue threat hunting on systems connected to the appliance or recently connected to it. Prioritize authentication and identity-management services, domain controllers, cloud identity logs, administrative workstations, and servers reached by remote users. Monitor for unusual logins, new accounts, privilege changes, command execution, persistence mechanisms, and unexpected access from appliance-related addresses.

Preserve evidence before resetting or rebuilding
Acquire a forensic image
Singapore CSA advises: “Preserve a forensic image from the impacted appliance(s) for forensic analysis and investigative purposes.” Use an incident-response or digital-forensics team that can document the collection, hash the image, protect the chain of custody, and work from a copy. Preserve volatile evidence and capture the appliance’s current time, network state, running services, configuration, and active sessions when your procedures and safety controls permit.
Do not let a desire for rapid remediation erase evidence. A factory reset destroys information that may show initial access, persistence, lateral movement, or the accounts used by an intruder. If business continuity requires an immediate replacement, image and document the original first whenever feasible, then keep it powered down and isolated for examination.
Export logs and artifacts
Collect appliance logs, configuration records, authentication events, administrative activity, and relevant artifacts before destructive remediation. Forward or export records to a protected system that the suspected appliance cannot alter. Correlate them with VPN authentication, directory, cloud identity, endpoint, firewall, DNS, and application logs.
The local Events viewer has a finite display window: Ivanti’s 2025 administration guide says it shows the most recent 5,000 messages. Export records before that limit, other retention policies, or rollover overwrite the events you need. Preserve the original exports and note the time range, timezone, export method, and administrator account used.

Use integrity checks carefully
Run Ivanti’s integrity-checking tools if your response plan calls for them, but do not use a clean result as the sole basis for declaring the system uncompromised. CISA’s joint advisory says the internal and external checkers are not sufficient to detect every compromise. Compare checker output with forensic findings, log analysis, threat-hunting results, and the rebuild decision.
Choose the clean recovery path
Once evidence is preserved, CISA’s sequence is to export configuration settings, complete the vendor-directed factory reset, rebuild the device on a supported software version, patch it, and then reimport the configuration. Ivanti describes the equivalent virtual-appliance approach as deploying a new build. Follow Ivanti’s instructions for removing any mitigation XML after the upgrade; do not carry obsolete mitigation files into the restored system.
| Deployment | Clean recovery action | Decision factors |
|---|---|---|
| Hardware appliance | Preserve evidence, export configuration, perform the Ivanti-directed factory reset, upgrade to a supported release, patch, and reimport configuration. | Evidence preservation, expected downtime, supported-version status, and your ability to validate a clean state. |
| Virtual appliance | Preserve evidence and configuration, then deploy a new build on a supported release, patch it, and reimport only reviewed configuration. | Evidence preservation, deployment time, supported-version status, and validation of the new build and imported settings. |
Replacement hardware can be considered when a reset cannot be trusted, the platform is no longer supported, or downtime and validation requirements favor a separate device. It is not a substitute for evidence collection or credential rotation. In every case, keep the original appliance isolated until investigators and system owners agree that it can be retired or disposed of.
Reset every exposed credential and trust relationship
Appliance-local secrets
Assume credentials stored on the appliance may have been read or altered. CISA requires revoking and reissuing connected or exposed certificates, keys, and passwords. At minimum, reset:

- The administrator enable password.
- Every local user password.
- Stored API keys.
- Service-account passwords used for authentication-server configuration.
- Certificates and private keys associated with the appliance or services it authenticates to.
Generate new secrets through approved systems, deliver them over controlled channels, and remove old values from scripts, automation, vaults, and documentation. Record which credentials were rotated, by whom, and when. Do not simply change the appliance password while leaving a reused password active in a directory, service account, or automation job.
On-premises domain accounts
Treat associated domain accounts as compromised. CISA calls for two password resets for on-premises accounts, with Kerberos-ticket revocation. The two changes prevent an attacker from continuing to use password-derived material that may remain valid after a single reset. Coordinate the resets with service owners so scheduled tasks, connectors, and authentication-server settings are updated without creating an outage.
Hybrid and cloud identity
For hybrid deployments, revoke cloud tokens. Disable cloud-joined or cloud-registered devices to revoke device tokens, then re-enable only after they have been examined and re-enrolled under your identity team’s process. Review conditional-access, multifactor-authentication, federation, and administrator settings for unauthorized changes. Rotate certificates and keys used by synchronization, federation, API integrations, and management tooling.

Investigate persistence and unauthorized activity
Use CISA’s indicators of compromise and detection methods to hunt for malicious activity. Analyze the preserved appliance image and exported records alongside identity, endpoint, network, and cloud telemetry. Build a timeline that answers:
Best Value
- When did suspicious access begin, and which vulnerability or account was involved?
- Which administrators, service accounts, certificates, keys, or tokens were used?
- What internal systems were reachable from the appliance?
- Were new users, scheduled tasks, scripts, firewall rules, or other persistence mechanisms created?
- Did the attacker access data or alter configurations after the initial foothold?
Check for evidence of persistence on systems connected to the appliance, not only on the appliance itself. Compare current privileged-group membership and identity policies with known-good baselines. Preserve suspicious files and logs for analysis rather than deleting them during cleanup.
Restore service only after validation
Pre-production checklist
- Confirm the forensic image, exported logs, and chain-of-custody records are secured.
- Verify the appliance was reset or replaced using Ivanti’s current instructions.
- Confirm the rebuilt system runs a supported software version with all required patches.
- Review configuration before importing it; remove unknown accounts, routes, certificates, keys, scripts, and mitigation artifacts that should no longer exist.
- Complete the required password, key, certificate, token, and Kerberos-ticket changes.
- Test authentication, authorization, logging, administrative access, and remote-user connectivity in an isolated or tightly controlled segment.
- Enable centralized log forwarding and alerting before production traffic is allowed.
Ivanti’s recovery order is explicit: “Take the solution out of production and look for signs that the threat actor took additional action”; “Factory reset, upgrade and patch”; then “Put the appliance back into production.” Do not shorten that order because a checker reports no findings.
Controlled return and continuous monitoring
Restore traffic in stages, with a documented rollback plan and named owner. Watch authentication and identity-management services, privileged-account activity, certificate use, API calls, and network connections from the rebuilt appliance. Continue integrity checks and continuous monitoring after restoration. Alert on repeated failed logins, impossible-travel patterns, newly created accounts, unexpected administrative commands, and access to systems that the appliance should not reach.

Common mistakes that prolong an Ivanti incident
- Resetting first: A factory reset before imaging can destroy evidence needed to determine scope and root cause.
- Trusting a clean checker: CISA says integrity checkers cannot detect every compromise.
- Leaving the appliance connected: Continued connectivity gives an attacker an opportunity to act while the team investigates.
- Rotating only the admin password: Stored API keys, local users, service accounts, certificates, domain credentials, and cloud tokens also require action.
- Ignoring connected systems: Compromise may persist in identity services, endpoints, or servers reached through the appliance.
- Relying on the local viewer: The Events viewer displays only the most recent 5,000 messages, so export and forward records promptly.
- Restoring without monitoring: A rebuilt appliance needs centralized logs, staged traffic, and post-restoration hunting.
When to bring in specialist incident response
Engage a qualified incident-response or digital-forensics provider when your team cannot safely image the appliance, interpret artifacts, determine whether privileged accounts were used, or coordinate identity remediation. The provider should be able to preserve the appliance, analyze logs and artifacts, support credential and token revocation, and explain findings in a defensible incident report. Maintain your own decision authority over isolation, account resets, notifications, and service restoration, and verify the provider’s qualifications and confidentiality terms before granting access.
Reporting and ongoing review
Vulnerability status, supported versions, vendor tools, and reporting obligations can change. After containment, consult the current Ivanti advisory, CISA guidance, and the requirements that apply to your organization’s country, sector, contracts, and cyber-insurance policy. Document what was isolated, what evidence was preserved, which secrets were revoked, what systems were hunted, and why service was considered safe to restore.
