iTunes Songs Greyed Out? How to Fix Unavailable Music

A grey song is not automatically a broken library. The row may belong to the wrong Apple Account, be hidden, restricted as explicit, missing its local file, waiting for Sync Library, or no longer be available in your region. First read the exact label or icon beside the track, then use the matching fix below. On current Windows installations, Apple Music manages the library and Apple Devices manages iPhone and iPad syncing; older iTunes installations use different names for some of the same controls.

Start with the app, device and source of the song

Identify where the track is grey and how it entered your collection. An iTunes Store purchase, an Apple Music subscription track, and an imported MP3 or CD rip require different remedies.

  • Apple Music for Windows or Music on Mac: manages the library, local files, Apple Music and Sync Library.
  • Apple Devices for Windows: handles USB or Wi-Fi music syncing to an iPhone, iPad or iPod.
  • Legacy iTunes for Windows: may still be installed; its equivalent of Sync Library is labelled iCloud Music Library.
  • iPhone or iPad: check the Music app and Settings > Music.

Apple describes the current Windows split in its music troubleshooting guidance and Apple Devices syncing instructions.

Quick diagnosis

What you see Likely cause First action
“No Longer Available” The catalog version was removed or is unavailable in your region Search Apple Music for a current version before deleting anything
An exclamation mark The original local file cannot be found Reconnect its drive or choose Locate
“Waiting” The local track has not finished cloud synchronization Keep the source computer online and update the cloud library
Only explicit songs are grey Content restrictions are set to Clean Permit Explicit content, if the account holder allows it
Only purchased songs are grey Wrong account, missing authorization or a hidden purchase Sign in to the purchasing account, authorize the computer and inspect Hidden Items
Grey download control The item may already be downloaded or already in the library Check the library and download status; a grey control does not prove the purchase is lost
Grey on iPhone but playable on the computer Incomplete sync, account mismatch or a conflict between Sync Library and manual syncing Determine which synchronization method the phone uses
Many tracks became grey together Account, cloud-library, region, catalog or storage problem Verify the account and inspect Cloud Status before resetting anything

Check the Apple Account, connection and software

  1. In Apple Music for Windows, click your name at the bottom of the sidebar. In iTunes for Windows or Music on Mac, open the Account menu. Confirm that the account matches the one used on your other devices.
  2. Remember that one account can own purchases while another supplies an Apple Music subscription. Identify which account should provide this particular track.
  3. Confirm an internet connection, then update Apple Music, iTunes, Apple Devices and the operating system where updates are offered.
  4. Search for the song. If a current version appears, the grey library entry may be stale. If search shows “No Longer Available” or no result, availability or regional rights may be involved.

Repair a greyed-out iTunes Store purchase

Use the purchasing account and authorize the computer

Sign in with the Apple Account that bought the song. In the account controls, authorize the computer to play iTunes Store purchases. Apple’s Windows guidance says non‑iTunes‑Plus purchases can play on up to five authorized computers; if that limit is reached, deauthorize an old computer before authorizing another.

Unhide the purchase

  1. Open Account > Account Settings and sign in if prompted.
  2. Find Hidden Items, choose Manage, and select Unhide for the music.
  3. Return to purchase history and redownload the track if necessary.

A grey download button can mean the song is already downloaded or present in the library, not that the purchase disappeared. See Apple’s purchase instructions at support.apple.com/en-us/120553.

Fix Sync Library and cloud-status problems

Apple Music or iTunes Match users can diagnose cloud processing instead of guessing. In the Apple Music app, select Songs. On Mac choose View > Show View Options; on Windows, right-click the column-heading bar. Enable Cloud Status and Cloud Download.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Waiting”

Keep the computer containing the original library online, update the cloud library, and allow processing to finish. On Mac use File > Library > Update Cloud Library. In Apple Music for Windows choose Sidebar Actions > Library > Update Cloud Library. Check the other device after synchronization completes. If the status remains stuck, Apple recommends deleting the entry and importing the backed-up original again; do not delete the only copy first.

Update from the source computer

Always start the cloud-library update on the computer where the local music originates. The receiving computer or device may need time to download the updated state.

Restore a missing local file

An exclamation mark means the library database points to a file that is not currently at its recorded location. This is common when an external drive is disconnected or a folder was moved.

  1. Reconnect the external drive or other storage containing the music.
  2. Click the exclamation mark and choose Locate.
  3. Browse to the original audio file. If offered, choose Find Files to locate other missing tracks.
  4. If the file no longer exists, restore it from an independent backup or import it again from the original disc or download.

The track cannot play or synchronize until its source file is available. Apple’s status-specific instructions are at support.apple.com/en-us/118287. Apple Music and Sync Library are not backup services, so preserve local files separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A file exists on the computer but not in Apple Music

Search the Mac or PC for the audio file, then drag it into the Apple Music app. If Sync Library is enabled, update Cloud Library afterward. Apple notes that some AAC files not created by Apple Music or downloaded from the iTunes Store may not play in Apple Music; treat that as a file-format problem rather than the default explanation for every grey row. Details appear in Apple’s Windows playback guide.

Handle restrictions, catalog removals and regional errors

Explicit songs only

When only explicit tracks are dimmed, check the content restriction. Apple states that setting restrictions to Clean greys out explicit songs. Change the setting to Explicit only if the account holder permits that content. Rebuilding the library will not solve a restriction.

“No Longer Available”

  1. Search Apple Music for the song or album and check whether a current edition exists.
  2. If a replacement is available, back up local music and note playlist, rating, play-count, artwork and tag information.
  3. Remove the stale entry and add the available version again only when you accept that metadata or playlist links may not transfer perfectly.

A catalog removal does not necessarily erase a separately purchased or locally backed-up copy. If no replacement is licensed in your country or region, that exact streaming version may not be restorable.

Country or region message

For “This item is not currently available in your country or region,” search for an equivalent version. If many songs are affected, verify the Apple Account, software updates and Sync Library on every device before considering a reset.

Sync Library method

For Apple Music or iTunes Match libraries, enable Sync Library on the computer and device, sign in to the same Apple Account, and allow the phone to finish processing. A subscription track should arrive through Sync Library rather than a manual cable transfer.

Manual Apple Devices method on Windows

  1. Open Apple Devices and connect the iPhone, iPad or iPod by USB/USB‑C, or use Wi-Fi syncing if configured.
  2. Select the device in the sidebar, then select Music.
  3. Turn on Sync music onto [device name].
  4. Choose Entire music library or Selected artists, albums, genres, and playlists.
  5. Select Apply, then eject the device before disconnecting.

Apple says Apple Music subscription songs cannot be manually synced through this workflow while Sync Library is enabled. Choose one method consistently, or turn Sync Library off only after understanding that downloaded music will be removed from devices. See the complete procedure at support.apple.com/guide/devices-windows/sync-music-to-your-device-mchlbf6a1fab/windows.

Use Sync Library reset only as a last resort

Before changing this setting, back up every local track and confirm that the source files still exist. Then turn Sync Library off on the affected devices, turn it on again, and wait for the library to rebuild. Apple warns that turning it off removes downloaded music from devices; a large library may take time to resynchronize, and the service does not replace a backup. This is a recovery step, not a guaranteed cure.

Prevent the problem from returning

  • Keep an independent backup of imported and downloaded music, including metadata where possible.
  • Keep the source drive connected while updating Cloud Library.
  • Use the same Apple Account consistently, while remembering that purchase and subscription ownership can differ.
  • Preserve original files before replacing “No Longer Available” entries.
  • Use Sync Library consistently across devices, or use manual Apple Devices syncing for locally managed music.

Final troubleshooting order

  1. Read the exact message or icon.
  2. Confirm the app, device and Apple Account.
  3. Check explicit-content restrictions.
  4. For purchases, authorize the computer and inspect Hidden Items.
  5. Search for a current catalog or regional replacement.
  6. Inspect Cloud Status and Cloud Download.
  7. Locate missing files and reconnect external storage.
  8. Update Cloud Library and complete device syncing.
  9. Only after a backup, consider turning Sync Library off and on.
