It’s Time for Epic Games—and Its CEO—to Touch Grass

Epic Games’ own account of its predicament makes the joke land: Fortnite engagement has fallen since 2025, spending has exceeded revenue, and the company says it is cutting more than 1,000 jobs. “Touch grass” is not a claim that CEO Tim Sweeney needs a walk. It is a demand for perspective—on players, budgets, creative influences and the limits of building ever more infrastructure around one platform.

Why the headline fits Epic’s moment

Epic describes itself as a vast connected ecosystem. Founded in 1991 and led by Sweeney from Cary, North Carolina, the company says its products—including Fortnite, Fall Guys, Rocket League and the Epic Games Store—serve more than 800 million accounts and generate more than 6 billion friend connections. Those figures are Epic’s claims, not an independently audited measure of active users.

That scale sits beside a blunt admission in an employee note dated March 24, 2026. Sweeney wrote: “The downturn in Fortnite engagement that started in 2025 means we’re spending significantly more than we’re making, and we have to make major cuts to keep the company funded.” He then stated: “Today we’re laying off over 1000 Epic employees.” Epic also identified more than $500 million in cost savings.

The contradiction is the point. A company can be enormous in reach while losing the attention and financial discipline that make that reach valuable. In this context, “touch grass” means reconnecting with conditions outside Epic’s own dashboards: what players return to, what creators can realistically build, what mobile users can access and what the business can sustain.

What Epic says caused the cuts

A Fortnite-specific downturn

Epic directly attributes the layoffs to declining Fortnite engagement that began in 2025 and to spending that had moved well above revenue. The note does not provide a public engagement percentage or a new financial forecast, so the scale and duration of the decline cannot be independently quantified from the announcement alone.

Industry headwinds and company-specific problems

Epic also characterized parts of the pressure as industry-wide: slower growth, weaker consumer spending, tougher cost economics and console sales below the previous generation. At the same time, it named challenges specific to its strategy, including Fortnite’s consistency, mobile optimization and the long payoff period for its platform investments. That distinction matters. A weak market can explain less spending; it does not automatically explain why a particular game fails to hold attention.

Support for affected employees

Epic says people affected by the cuts receive at least four months of base pay. U.S. employees are promised six months of Epic-paid health coverage. Those provisions reduce some immediate risk for workers, but they do not erase the disruption created by eliminating more than 1,000 roles.

Epic’s proposed reset

The company says it will concentrate on three connected priorities:

Rank #3
Fortnite Physical Gift Card
  • An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
  • If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
  • The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
  • Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.
  • Redemption: Online
  • Fortnite: fresher seasons, gameplay, story content and live events intended to restore recurring attention.
  • Creator tools: more stable development tools for the Fortnite ecosystem, including UEFN.
  • Unreal: a transition from Unreal Engine 5 and UEFN toward Unreal Engine 6, alongside continued investment in the wider engine ecosystem.

This is a coherent plan on paper: improve the flagship product, make the creator layer more dependable and sell better tools to developers beyond Fortnite. It is also a plan that doubles down on the same platform logic that helped produce the current scale.

Question What Epic says it will do What must be demonstrated
Player attention Add seasons, gameplay, story and live events Whether players return regularly and remain engaged
Creator value Stabilize UEFN and related developer tools Fewer disruptions and useful capabilities in everyday production
Economics Cut costs by more than $500 million Sustainable spending and a healthier revenue mix
Reach Address mobile optimization Better access and performance on phones and tablets
Technology Move toward Unreal Engine 6 A transition that helps developers rather than adding complexity

The editorial question is whether another expansion of the platform solves an attention and execution problem—or deepens it. That is analysis, not a reported outcome: Epic has announced intentions, not proof that the reset will work.

Is Tim Sweeney out of touch with gamers?

The available evidence does not establish that Sweeney personally misunderstands players. It does establish a gap between Epic’s enormous stated network and the company’s admission that Fortnite engagement has declined while costs outrun revenue. Calling that gap “out of touch” is an interpretation of the business choices, not a verified fact about Sweeney’s character.

Accountability therefore belongs to measurable questions: Can Fortnite become reliably compelling again? Can Epic improve mobile reach without sacrificing quality? Can its creator tools become stable enough to justify continued investment? And can Unreal Engine 6 arrive without asking developers to absorb another costly transition before the previous one has paid off?

What “touch grass” means in gaming culture

In online communities, “touch grass” is shorthand for stepping away from the screen and reconnecting with offline life. Epic art director Nate Wells used the phrase as creative advice in 2025: “When you see really interesting work, it’s because it seems to come from somewhere else: an interest in history, an interest in science. Touch grass, read a book, throw a ball, get tackled once in a while. Get in at least one fight. Learn how to dance. Play the piano.”

Wells was discussing where creative ideas come from, not prescribing corporate strategy for Epic or criticizing Sweeney. Applying his advice to this situation is an editorial inference: a company building games and tools for hundreds of millions of people may benefit from looking beyond platform metrics, feature races and industry self-reference. History, science, physical play, music and ordinary social life can reveal what makes experiences feel surprising rather than merely optimized.

The tests Epic now faces

  1. Refresh Fortnite without exhausting its audience. New seasons and events need to produce durable return visits, not only launch-day spikes.
  2. Make creation dependable. UEFN and Unreal tools must earn trust through stability, clear workflows and capabilities creators can use repeatedly.
  3. Reach mobile players. Optimization and availability have to translate into practical access, not just a roadmap promise.
  4. Match ambition to economics. The company must show that its spending, workforce and platform investments fit what the business can support.
  5. Broaden the creative input. “Touching grass” means making room for influences that do not originate inside games, feeds or platform strategy.

Epic’s March 2026 note supplies a diagnosis and a direction, not a verdict. The company remains large, influential and capable of shaping how games are made and played. Its next chapter will be judged less by the size of its ecosystem than by whether that ecosystem can regain attention, protect creator confidence and operate within sustainable limits.
