A traffic drop after a site migration does not prove Google has judged the new site “low quality.” It can result from broken redirects, migration-only crawl blocks, conflicting canonicals, stale sitemaps, server failures, or pages that became thinner or less useful. Diagnose the technical and content tracks together: verify that Google can reach and understand the correct URLs, then compare whether the new pages still satisfy the old search intent.
What “site quality” means after a migration
Site quality is not a standalone diagnosis. Google’s migration troubleshooting guidance lists technical problems and content or canonical signals together. A redesign can preserve every URL and still lose visibility if important sections, images, structured data, or answers disappeared. Conversely, excellent new content can remain invisible when robots rules, redirects, or server capacity prevent crawling.

Separate the investigation into two tracks:
- Migration mechanics: URL mapping, permanent redirects, robots directives, canonicals, internal links, sitemaps, status codes, rendering, and infrastructure.
- Page usefulness: whether each replacement page is distinct, complete, accurate, consistent with its URL, and aligned with the intent that attracted visitors before the move.
Check technical migration failures before judging quality
Freeze a before-and-after baseline before changing the new site. Export top landing pages, indexed URLs, organic clicks, rankings, backlinks, templates, metadata, and the old content versions. This gives you a control set instead of relying on an overall traffic chart.

Request representative old URLs, including high-traffic pages, deep pages, files, and URLs with parameters. Each should return a permanent redirect directly to the closest matching new URL. Avoid chains, loops, redirects to the home page, and destinations that return errors. A home-page redirect is not a substitute for a page-to-page mapping and can discard relevance.

Keep redirects active for as long as possible; Google’s site-move guidance says generally at least one year. Redirects give search engines time to transfer signals and let visitors using old links reach the right content.
2. Remove migration-only blocks
- Search page source and response headers for accidental
noindexandX-Robots-Tagdirectives. - Review
robots.txtfor disallows copied from staging. - Test that authentication, firewall rules, IP restrictions, and bot challenges do not block Googlebot or ordinary users.
- Confirm that canonicals no longer point to the old host unless that is deliberately required.
3. Make URL signals agree
For every indexable new page, the redirect destination, internal links, sitemap entry, self-referencing canonical, and visible page identity should indicate the same preferred URL. Google can select a different canonical from the one you declare when content quality or technical signals conflict. Correct the underlying conflict before requesting reindexing.

4. Validate status codes and deleted content
A page that has no replacement should return a genuine 404 or 410. Do not send deleted URLs to a generic success page. A soft 404 occurs when the content looks like an error page but the server returns a successful response, which can waste crawl activity and confuse indexing.
5. Submit and inspect the new sitemap
The submitted sitemap should contain the new, preferred URLs—not old addresses, redirected URLs, parameter variants, or pages blocked from indexing. In Search Console, review sitemap processing and use URL Inspection on representative pages to see the Google-selected canonical, crawl status, and indexing decision.

Compare the new pages with the old ones
Once access and URL signals are sound, compare pages individually rather than assuming a template-level change explains every loss.
Content continuity
- Did the page retain the sections that answered the original query?
- Were specifications, instructions, examples, images, downloads, or tables removed?
- Did boilerplate replace the useful copy, or did several formerly distinct pages become duplicates?
- Does the title, visible heading, and body match the URL and the promise made in search results?
Completeness and trust signals
Look for placeholder text, broken images, missing author or product details where they are important to the topic, and structured-data errors introduced by the new template. A page can return 200 and still be effectively empty, misleading, or incomplete. Treat that as a content defect, not evidence of a mysterious ranking penalty.

Canonical and duplicate variants
Check trailing slashes, case variants, HTTP-to-HTTPS versions, mobile or parameter URLs, and pages generated by filters. Consolidate duplicates deliberately, then ensure internal links and the sitemap use the selected URL. If two pages serve different intents, do not canonicalize one away merely to simplify the report.
Use Search Console, logs, and infrastructure data together
In Search Console, compare the Page Indexing report, URL Inspection results, crawl statistics, sitemap status, and trends for Not found, blocked, duplicate, and server-error reports. A sudden rise in one category often identifies the migration change that matters more than an aggregate traffic graph.
Expect heavier crawling after a move. Monitor origin errors, latency, timeouts, CDN behavior, cache rules, and JavaScript rendering on both desktop and mobile output. If the server cannot withstand the increased crawl, Google may discover URLs but fail to fetch or render them reliably.
For a hosting move with no visible URL change, test the new infrastructure first, change DNS, monitor both hosts, and shut down the old host only after the new host reliably serves users and Googlebot. This scenario still needs capacity and rendering checks even though redirects are not involved.
Choose a remediation path based on evidence

For any option, preserve observability: retain the before-and-after baseline, crawl logs, analytics annotations, and a tested redirect list. Update internal links, important external links where you control them, campaign URLs, profiles, and the submitted sitemap.
What recovery timing can—and cannot—tell you
Temporary ranking fluctuation is normal while Google discovers, crawls, and processes replacement URLs. Small and medium sites may see most pages move in weeks, while larger sites can take longer. There is no universal recovery deadline: URL volume, discovery paths, server speed, rendering, and site complexity all affect processing.
A continuing decline is not proof of a quality classification. Recheck the technical evidence after each release, then reassess the affected pages against their former intent and usefulness. Requesting reindexing before fixing the underlying signals does not resolve the cause.
