It’s Never Been Easier to Find Answers. Why Sitting With Uncertainty Can Bring Wisdom

Instant answers can explain what we know; they cannot always tell us what a difficult experience means. In a Guardian opinion essay published on 4 October 2026, Muhammad Abdulsater uses the Qur’anic story of Moses and al-Khidr to argue that wisdom sometimes requires patience with what we do not yet understand—not giving up reason, and not accepting suffering without question.

What Abdulsater argues about uncertainty

Abdulsater’s central point is that partial knowledge can look like complete understanding. In the Qur’anic account he discusses, Moses encounters events that seem troubling and judges them with the information available to him. Only later does a wider context emerge. Abdulsater reads the story as a reminder that a conclusion formed from limited knowledge may not capture the whole situation.

That reading is the essay’s interpretation of the narrative, not a claim that people should stop asking questions. Abdulsater explicitly says the story does not ask readers to suspend thought or rational inquiry. Instead, it invites humility about the limits of what we can know at a particular moment.

Why instant answers can make waiting harder

The essay connects that lesson to everyday digital habits: searching symptoms, refreshing news and asking AI systems for explanations. These tools can make information easier to retrieve, but access to an answer is not the same as certainty about what an event means or what will happen next.

Abdulsater calls the gap a paradox: “although information has become ubiquitous, our tolerance for uncertainty has never been lower.” That is his cultural observation; the essay gives no named study or statistic establishing a measurable decline. Its point is reflective rather than quantitative: when quick explanations are always within reach, waiting for a more complete understanding can feel especially uncomfortable.

Patience is not passivity or an excuse for harm

For Abdulsater, sitting with uncertainty means acknowledging that an explanation has not arrived yet. It does not mean refusing to investigate, delaying a needed decision, or treating another person’s suffering as acceptable because a hidden reason might someday appear.

  • Keep asking and checking. Rational inquiry still matters; the lesson is not to confuse a provisional answer with a complete one.
  • Name what is unknown. Saying “I do not yet understand” can be more honest than forcing certainty from incomplete information.
  • Do not explain away suffering. The story, as Abdulsater presents it, is not a license for passive resignation or for dismissing harm.

The balance is to remain engaged while admitting the limits of one’s perspective. An answer may eventually emerge, but the essay does not promise that every painful experience will become clear.

What the essay offers readers now

Abdulsater presents patience and humility as spiritual practices for the interval between a question and an explanation. His closing thought is that faith can mean continuing before every question has been answered. Readers need not share his religious commitments to recognize the practical distinction: seeking understanding is compatible with accepting that understanding may be incomplete for now.

The essay is a reflective opinion piece, not a psychological study or a detailed theological analysis. It offers a way to think about delayed meaning, grounded in the author’s interpretation of a Qur’anic narrative, rather than evidence that uncertainty has a particular measurable effect on wellbeing.
