The magnet behind the aircraft-carrier headline is ITER’s central solenoid, a giant superconducting component built for a fusion experiment in southern France. The carrier comparison describes the scale of the magnetic force; no reviewed source reports that the magnet actually lifted a ship.
What is the magnet powerful enough to lift an aircraft carrier?
It is the central solenoid, a custom magnet assembly at the heart of ITER’s tokamak. ITER is a multinational experiment designed to test magnetic-confinement fusion at reactor scale. The central solenoid is part of the machine’s magnet system, not a standalone lifting device. ITER described it in 2021 as “a massive magnet assembly at the heart of the ITER Tokamak.”

Can the ITER magnet really lift a ship?
There is no reported aircraft-carrier lifting demonstration. The headline is a dramatic comparison for the magnet’s strength, not a description of a crane-like job it is designed to perform. A 2021 Futurism report published by Sott.net, citing New Scientist, said the magnetic field would be about 280,000 times stronger than Earth’s field. That dated figure should not be read as a ship-lifting test result.

The 2021 Futurism/Sott.net report described the fully assembled magnet as about 60 feet tall and 14 feet in diameter. Those dimensions refer to the assembled magnet, while ITER’s 2021 account describes a supported central-solenoid stack measuring 15.5 metres tall and weighing 1,200 tonnes. ITER said the assembly platform kept “the entire 1,200-tonne, 15.5-metre-tall stack level, plumb and stable.” The figures describe related assembly stages or configurations, so they are not interchangeable measurements.

What does the magnet do in a fusion reactor?
The central solenoid helps create and control the magnetic environment used to confine fusion plasma inside ITER’s tokamak. The magnetic system is central to the experiment’s approach: the plasma must be controlled within the machine rather than allowed to contact its walls. This makes the solenoid a specialized piece of fusion infrastructure, not a consumer magnet or an equivalent to an ordinary neodymium or MRI magnet.

The challenge is not just producing a powerful magnetic field. The components must be assembled into a massive, stable structure and aligned precisely within the tokamak. ITER’s 2021 account covers the specialized tooling and support needed to position the stack, as well as fabrication logistics during the pandemic. The reported 2021 debut and first module delivery are historical milestones, not evidence that the magnet was newly invented in 2026.
