Italy’s Foreign Ministry said its website was targeted by a cyberattack on 8 October 2026 and that security systems had mitigated it without disrupting services. The ministry was also checking diplomatic and consular mission websites for similar attempts; it did not say those sites had been breached.

What is confirmed about the attack?

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, based at the Farnesina, said its website had been targeted since the morning of 8 October. It reported that security systems had effectively mitigated the attack and that services continued without disruption. The ministry said it was monitoring the situation with the National Strategic Centre and relevant authorities. The ministry’s statement does not specify attack volume, duration, financial impact, or whether any data was accessed.

Were Italian embassy websites hacked?

That has not been established. The ministry said analyses were underway on Italian diplomatic and consular mission websites to check for similar attempts. The available reports do not give the review’s outcome or confirm a successful attack on an embassy or consular site. A review for attempted attacks is not evidence that a site was compromised.

Who claimed responsibility?

ANSA reported that the pro-Russian group NoName057(16) claimed responsibility and that the ministry site was flooded with fake access requests. That is a reported claim, not an official attribution. Reuters, republished by Internazionale, reported that the ministry had named no suspect.

Was it a DDoS attack?

Euronews described the apparent method, based on initial reports, as a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack. In a DDoS attack, many devices or systems send traffic toward a service in an attempt to overwhelm it. The ministry confirmed a cyberattack but did not identify its technical method, so DDoS should be treated as an initial news characterization, not a ministry-confirmed forensic finding.

What did the ministry say about its response?

Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said the ministry had strengthened its prevention, monitoring, and response capabilities in recent months, describing cybersecurity as a key element of a ministry reform approved the previous year. The official statement gave no specific capability or spending figures. It also said Italy planned to work with Romania and other EU member states on proposals at forthcoming European meetings to designate those responsible for cyberattacks, including attacks targeting Italian institutions; this was a stated plan, not a completed designation.
